Back Office Operations in Southwestern Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh region is a magnet for customer service centers, with more than 250 identified back office facilities

including call centers, data centers, operations centers, pharmacy centers and shared services operations that

employ approximately 40,000 individuals. Of those facilities, 113 are dedicated call centers and telephone

services employing more than 17,000 individuals.

Key factors that contribute to the region’s standing as an ideal location for customer contact centers:

Large and educated population base

o 1.3 million person labor force

o 170,000 enrolled college students

o 89.1% of region’s residents have at least a high school education, vs. 85.6% for the U.S.

Low natural disaster potential

o One of the most disaster-free parts of the country

Robust telecommunications infrastructure

Extensive public transit system

o Bus

o Light rail

Eastern Time Zone location (the time zone is home to nearly half the US population)

Companies that currently operate call centers in the Pittsburgh region include inbound and outbound marketing

companies, utilities, banks, insurance companies, healthcare companies, answering services, and others.

According to the EMSI, the number of Customer Service Representatives in the region increased by 2.7% between

2010 and 2015, while the number of Telemarketers in the region decreased by 10.7%. Nationally, there was an

overall increase of 11.4% in Customer Service Representatives employment while the number of Telemarketers

grew by 11.0%. The proportion of people employed as Customer Service Representatives in the Pittsburgh Region

is 15% above the national average, although it is 17% lower for Telemarketers.

effective Oct. 9, rationalizing its space in Philadelphia so it can operate

more efficiently and moving some functions to Pittsburgh. The functions

services like payment processing that are already strongly supported in

Back Office Closing Pittsburgh Allegheny Business Services 156 Through July 2013 Computershare Ltd. acquired the Pittsburgh operation when it bought the Shareowner Services unit from Bank of New York Mellon Corp. in January. Computershare will begin transferring the work from Pittsburgh to other offices it runs in the United States, starting Sept. 30. The company also is closing a call center in Edison, N.J., as part of the consolidation. At the time of the acquisition, the unit employed a total of 900 people and had offices in College Station, Texas, Troy, Mich. and Jersey City, N.J., in addition to the Downtown location. The Downtown location is not closing and that half of the affected employees would be eligible for other positions in that same building, or can follow their work with a relocation allowance. Jul-13 Liberty Mutual Call Center Downsizing New Castle Lawrence Financial Services 30 Mid-2014 25 to 30 employees at the New Castle offices were notified in March that operations for two no-fault insurance brands are being consolidated into one in the state of Washington. The change will take place in June, 2014. Operation includes a large call center operation and another bill review unit that is growing. total employment is about 600. Liberty Mutual is aligning its two no-fault insurance brands — Liberty Mutual and Safeco - by merging the two claims organizations. About 430 employees will be potentially impacted by some of the changes, which largely are relocations or consolidations of some operations.

Mar-16 Dominion Resources Call Center Closing Pittsburgh Allegheny Utility 60 By Oct. 1, 2016 Dominion Resources Inc. is closing an office in Pittsburgh where 60 people work, marking the end of the company's operations in Western Pennsylvania. The Richmond, Va.-based energy company's North Shore customer service and sales center, part of its Dominion Energy Solutions operation that sells natural gas to customers in deregulated energy markets, will be closed by Oct. 1. Half of the workers in the office, who handle inbound customer service calls, will lose their jobs as Dominion outsources the function to an outside company. The remaining 30 workers, who make sales calls to consumers, will lose their jobs if they don't move to Richmond, where the company is transferring the work.
