Summer 2017

Dear Friends: For those of us who pray and who care, this has been a year when much prayer has been called for. Thank you to each prayer leader who has so faithfully prayed and encouraged others to pray for the ministry of RSVP and for our communities, country and world. In our ministry, there have been so many exciting things to pray about. Because of your prayers, from January to June 2017, thousands of Canadians (19,363 in fact!) have heard, and more than 74 have responded to, the message of God’s sacrificial love. Because of your prayers, our ministry leaders have known love, support and inspiration. Because of your prayers, the resource material and films have brought encouragement to many. God hears each prayer, God is thrilled with each prayer, and God answers each prayer whether they are for RSVP, other ministries or our needy world. You and those who pray with you are amazing. Thank you! I am always excited about the devotionals that we share with you. Each year I am tremendously blessed by them. I am, in fact, doubly blessed because I read and peruse them before they are posted and then I hear them again at my Prayer Connection. I am always thrilled by the thoughts shared that reflect lives so close to our wonderful God. We are, indeed, blessed people. I would encourage you and challenge you to consider the thoughts given to you personally before sharing them with your fellow 'pray-ers'. And then as you talk about those thoughts together you will be doubly blessed. Also, please do not miss a devotional because your group doesn’t meet together or your planning team doesn’t meet for a month. Read them all and pass them on to your group. It is easy to attach them to an email and send them out. You do not want to miss any of the messages that God means for you all to have. We do try to make meaningful adjustments and revisions to each section of the support material. Check out each page, please. You will notice that the prayers of request are grouped according to ‘world’ prayers and ‘ministry’ prayers. We hope this will be a helpful addition. Also, as a way of encouraging us to pray scripture, each month’s prayers section begins with a Bible verse and a prayer that is shaped by that verse. A new support page has been added as well. ‘Lord, Teach Us to Pray’ shows different prayer 'helps' that you might use in your group or personal devotional times to refresh your prayer thoughts. Only God knows how our prayers over the next twelve months will affect our world, our ministry and those who are without Jesus. But we do know that they will bring about wonderful things, for our God loves to hear our prayers. He longs to give us the desires of our hearts as we seek his kingdom first. Be excited to pray! What Is a Prayer Connection? An Introduction to RSVP’s monthly prayer time

If we asked the women who attend regularly ’What is an RSVP Prayer Connection?’, we would probably get a different definition from each of them. Technically, it is what the name implies – a time set aside specifically to connect with each other and with God in prayer. But it is also the solid foundation of our RSVP groups, the pre-cursor to reaching out with the Gospel to other women. It is recognition that no matter how gifted, talented, trained or willing we might be, we cannot be effective witnesses to God’s love without inviting God to be our partner. In the ‘traditional’ RSVP groups, there have been three organized meeting times:

• the focus of our ministry is the outreach event, where we share Jesus with the guests; • prior to the outreach event, the Planning Team (those who are chosen to lead the local group) meets to work out the

details of the upcoming outreach event; • before either of these meetings, the first time we gather each month is a prayer time, or Prayer Connection. All who

would like to attend come to pray for the outreach event, for those who have been invited as program guests, and our invited friends. We also pray for the national RSVP ministry, for the needs of the local group, for our communities and our country, and we pray for one another.

The time of prayer begins with a devotional provided through the Prayer Leader’s Resource. A time of praise and thanksgiving and a time of intercessory prayer follow. Written prayers of worship and prayers of request are provided so women who don’t often pray audibly can be comfortable participating. These prayers also help begin the flow of prayer; they help us all to pray outside our usual thinking. With focused thinking, we praise God, pray for the weather, pray for the woman from the exercise class that we invited, for the one who shares her faith story, for our Prime Minister, our firefighters, for Donna Lamothe, what is on the heart of each one who attends, and so on. It is always an encouraging and stimulating time. As RSVP Community Groups and RSVP support prayer groups begin, it is hoped/prayed that the prayer tools used traditionally will be valuable to them as well. Whether they meet in 2’s and 3’s with a cup of tea or as a way of maintaining connections, the prayer will be sweet and valuable to each one and to RSVP Ministries. Over the years, its name, who contributes its devotionals, and the format of the prayer time have evolved, but never its purpose. Prayer is truly the strength of who we are and our God, who listens to each word spoken, is pleased to answer and to use our small prayers to bring about his great and mighty will in the hearts and lives of many.

Guidelines for Prayer Connections Format: 60-90 minutes

In preparation for your Prayer Connection:

• Print two copies of the monthly devotional (print the front and back of the second copy on two separate pages). • Cut out the scriptures printed under 'Reflecting on God’s Word’, as well as the Worship Meditation scripture, the

Prayers of Worship, and the monthly Prayers of Request. • You can also download the devotional information to a tablet for your use and use a printed copy to cut and

distribute scripture and prayers. The Prayer Leader’s Resource is found on the website: www.rsvpministries.com Website procedure:

• Click on ‘Leader’s log-in’ (obtain username and password from your Regional Prayer Advisor, Regional Director or Area Representative); you will be taken directly to ‘Leader’s Source’.

• Under ‘Resources for Bible Study and Prayer’, click on ‘Resources for Prayer’. • Click on ‘Download’ next to the Prayer Leader's Resource; document will open in a separate tab. To save this on

your computer, you must download by clicking on the download icon at the top right of the page. • If you want to print from the website, find the material you need by scrolling through the pages. • Print the information needed; when printing individual items, be sure to print by the printer page number and not by

the Resource page number. • For your convenience, each month the devotionals and prayer requests for the coming month are made available in a

separate document under ‘What’s New’.

Gather and Connect (10-20 Minutes)

• Welcome, introductions, conversation and simple refreshments. • Distribute:

⋅ Invitations for next month’s outreach meeting ⋅ Scripture references or printed verses for 'Reflecting on God’s Word' ⋅ Prayers of Worship, Prayers of Request, and paper for personal prayer requests

Devotional (10-20 Minutes) The Devotional Reading and 'Reflecting on God’s Word'. Allow time for and encourage women to share their thoughts. Worship (10 Minutes) If you like, sing a song or include recorded worship music as part of the Worship Meditation time.

• Have someone read the passage for Worship Meditation. • Share specific answers to prayer from your last Prayer Connection and Outreach Meeting. • Conclude this time with the written prayers of worship and your sentence prayers of worship, praise and

thanksgiving.

Prayer Leader’s Resource 2017 – 2018 6

Petition (30 Minutes)

• If the group is larger than 10, divide into smaller groups for prayer when possible. • Avoid praying one person after another in a circle. • Encourage women to pray for one request at a time. • Pray spontaneously if women feel comfortable. • Encourage everyone to participate by reading the provided written requests. • Timing:

• 10 to 15 minutes for your local outreach ministry • 10 minutes for our nation and RSVP Ministries (prayers of request) • 5 minutes for personal needs

• Conclude by praying for those on your heart who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Pray for them by first name and ask for open doors to invite them to the outreach event.

Tips and Tools for Prayer Leaders

RSVP prayer materials are developed to guide your group into a meaningful time of connecting with God and to nurture those new to personal, audible prayers. They also provide a starting point for your personal preparation and give you resources to lead others.

1. Prepare Your Own Heart

• Prayerfully choose the devotional you will use each month or use the month’s designated devotional as posted. • Read and reflect on the devotional and scriptures with the intent to apply it in your own life. • Pray for your Prayer Connection gathering; be open to creative ideas God may give.

2. Plan for Variety

• Create interest by giving your Prayer Connections a theme or unique setting such as:

o Be a blessing – collect items for a specific group such as a women’s shelter, community youth facility, pregnancy care centre, etc.; pray specifically for them.

o Drive a prayer van – gather a few women to drive around your community stopping to pray in front of schools, city hall, a court house, etc.; finish up at a coffee shop.

o Have an exchange – plants, Christmas ornaments, candles, recipes. o Meet in a comfortable or distinctive location – a tea house, a historic property or in someone’s back

yard. Consider community rooms in shopping malls and libraries; they are sometimes free of charge. • Encourage participation while respecting the differences in each woman’s walk of faith. • Let each pray as she is inspired and give the option of silent prayer. • Set an example by praying simple, succinct prayers on one subject. Do not feel responsible to audibly pray for every

request.

3. Involve More People

• Expand participation by asking others to lead a song, read the devotional or share an answer to prayer. • Invite those who don’t usually attend. Personal invitations are always most effective. • Create special invitations and distribute widely, inviting those who don’t usually attend, such as women from your

church or other Christians you know. • Prayer Connection invitations can be placed on the tables at the outreach event. • Briefly include the Prayer Connection information in announcements at the outreach event. • Collaborate with the reservations coordinator and occasionally ask callers to call specifically for the Prayer

Connection, having them call early enough to include an invitation to the Prayer Connection in the message. Inviting through your email list is possible too. Try using ‘E-vites’.

• Challenge each planning team member to make it a priority to attend and to bring one other person with her.

Prayer Leader’s Resource 2017 – 2018 8

4. Provide Effectiveness

• If the women are comfortable with it, break into groups of two or three to pray for personal requests. • Praying scripture is a valuable way of praying in God’s will. Provide pre-printed verses of Scripture for participants to

lift their personal concern to the Lord using the Word of God. (Example: 1 Peter 5:7—“Father, today I cast the care of my troubled daughter on you. I believe you care for me.”) Each person inserts her personal concern in the underlined portion. This keeps the prayer brief, but allows each to present her need to God; this can be done silently.

• Worship using the names of God (see Page 11). Set the example by speaking out one of the attributes. For example, “I thank you, Jesus, that you are my Redeemer;” “We worship you, our Wonderful Counselor.”

“Lord, Teach Us to Pray” Do we need formulas, methods or structures to pray?

Most of us pray. Even those who don’t claim to be followers of Jesus Christ sometimes pray. Prayer has been given many definitions, but basically it is talking with God. Prayer is the foundation and the on-going support of our ministry. Prayer is essential in all that we hope to do as a ministry or as individual believers in Jesus Christ. So, even though we might pray, we also plead, “Lord, teach us to pray.” This support page for the Prayer Leader’s Resource isn’t a complete teaching on prayer; there have been libraries of books written on prayer, but it might give you some guidance or some structure to your prayer life if you are asking , “Lord, teach me to pray.”

A. Using what is called the Lord’s Prayer, or Jesus’ response to the disciples plea for instruction, is certainly a valuable place to begin. It could be called Jesus’ formula for prayer (see Matthew 6:9-13).

B. • “Our Father, who art in heaven” – acknowledge the gift of being a child of God, of having a close, personal

relationship with the God of Heaven. • “Hallowed be thy name” – acknowledge who God is, praise him, and worship him. Prayer is a conversation with

God; recognize that he is there. • “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done” – unite our will with God’s will and ask not only for what we want but what

God wants for us. • “On earth as it is in heaven” – recognize our need for God’s help in pursuing the kingdom of heaven now. • “Give us this day our daily bread” – entrust our physical and spiritual needs to God. • “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us” – ask for forgiveness of sin, relief from

our burdens and guilt, and recognize our need to respond in mercy to others. • “And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil” – ask that “Our Father” would guide us away from sin

and into holiness and closer to him. This asks him to protect us and to prepare us to be effective in the world.

C. The “ACTS” formula is a simple, well-used structure: • Adoration – expressing the greatness of God • Confession – confessing my mistakes and using this as a time of learning and growth • Thanksgiving – feeling and expressing gratitude to God • Supplication – making requests for others and for myself

Prayer Leader’s Resource 2017 – 2018 10

Other acronyms are:

D. Taking a “TRIP” with God asks four questions: E.

• T – thanksgiving – for what am I thankful? • R – regrets – what do I regret? • I – intercession – for whom do I need to pray? • P – purpose – what is my purpose or plan for today, this week, my life?

F. “GREAT” acronym:

• G – greeting – addressing God • R – reason – why am I praying • E – emotions – those related to my reason for prayer such as fear, joy, uncertainty, etc. • A – action – what do I want God to do and what should I do • T – thanks – gratitude to God

G. This five-finger prayer might be useful (you can try this with your children or grandchildren too):

• Thumb – pray for those closest to me • Pointer – pray for those who guide us such as teachers, ministers or ministry leaders • Middle (tall) – pray for those who stand tall: government leaders, business leaders, police, military, etc. • Ring (weakest) – pray for those who are weak: the poor, sick, infirm, infants, homeless, the powerless, etc. • Pinkie (smallest) – pray for me and my needs

There are many more, I am sure. Perhaps one or some of these might guide you in your prayers or they might refresh your prayer time! RSVP prayer leaders: Consider trying a different one of these prayer enhancements at your Prayer Connections or planning team meetings each month for awhile. (Sharing their responses with us would be good.) And you might want to print the pages and hand them out for their personal use.

Names of God with Scripture References

The names of God used in the Bible help us understand the many aspects of his character. God’s names represent his attributes, his nature, and all the ways he relates to us. Using these names in prayer causes us to draw closer to the One who knows us intimately and loves us unconditionally. September Prayer Connection Devotional A Fresh Start

Linda Reed, Cambridge, ON

Reflecting on God’s Word: The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. (Lamentations 3:22-23 NLT) Drain the blood into a basin. Then take a bundle of hyssop branches and dip it into the blood. Brush the hyssop across the top and sides of the doorframes of your houses. And no one may go out through the door until morning. (Exodus 12:22 NLT) Joanna Gaines, the popular shiplap decorator from “Fixer Upper” writes: “I don’t know about you, but I love a clean slate, a fresh start.”1 Fresh starts come in many forms: a new year, a fresh season, for gardeners … new starts of tomatoes and kale. For those of us who often serve others, a season of rest. For all of us, new mercies begin every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). God is in the business of fresh starts. He states: “Do not call to mind the former things … I will do something new; will you not be aware of it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19). They may require huge changes but, more often than not, they are our daily fresh start with God. We can cry out with David, “Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean, wash me and I will be whiter than snow …. Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psalm 51: 7, 10). The purity through hyssop wasn’t by punishment; it is the provision of the blood from a Passover Lamb tapped by way of hyssop onto the doorposts (Exodus 12:22). It’s God’s offer of a fresh start for his people. While we may not have access to hyssop, there is always chalk. Gypsy Smith preached to millions, bringing about significant revivals. Uneducated, he lectured at Harvard and visited the White House. When asked his secret, he simply took a piece of chalk and drew a circle. He then urged his audience to step into their own circle and pray for revival within the person in it. Let me encourage you to picture yourself in a circle, abiding there with God; remembering his mercies are new every morning. At Heritage College we’ve been encouraging students and leaders alike to join God in our own chalk circles praying for his revival across Canada. We’ve been using the following song lyrics to ask God to renew our hearts, and revive our land:

“Restore my soul, revive my heart

Renew my life, in every part

Reveal to me, what sin remains

Then lead me to the cross again.”

- Vertical Church Band

(or see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2ovPXCAJRw). I’ll agree with Joanna … “I don’t know about you, but I love a clean slate, a fresh start.”

Worship Meditation: Psalm 51:17

The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. (Psalm 51:17 NLT) Prayers of Worship and Surrender (taken from Psalm 51): With a contrite heart, O Lord, I ask, “Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” (Verse 7) In great humility, I pray, “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.” (Verse 10) With great love, I plead, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you … I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness.” (Verses 12, 14)

Prayers of Request for September Prepared by Karen Erickson

We are fellow workmen – laborers together – with and for God … (1 Corinthians 3:9 Amp) How privileged we are to be labourers together with you, Sovereign God. As we consider the tasks we have before us, help us to remember that we are yoked with you in our responsibilities. Prayers for our world:

† Labour Day has become the beginning of a ‘new year’. Thank you, Lord of the harvest, for the many who labour on our behalf. Guard and protect our farmers, city workers, store personnel, the police, emergency response teams and so many more who contribute to our lives.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you that we live in a country where honest labour is valued and taught. Thank you that jobs are

available to many. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † For those who struggle to find employment, we pray that there will be suitable jobs found so a sense of self

worth and fulfillment can be theirs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for the young adults of Canada and the search that many are on to find careers that will enable

them to have hope for their future. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for employers who choose to have disabled individuals work for them. Please help each one

employed to find worth and value in their contributions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We ask for your guidance for the Hon. Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and

Labour and other Canadian Cabinet Ministers as they seek to find ways to encourage and provide for the workers of Canada.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As Canada’s churches begin their fall programs, Father, would you honour them with your blessings on the

plans that have been made and the hopes they have to lift up your name in their communities? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As a new school year begins, we pray for the little ones going to school for the first time. We pray that they

will find special friends to share with and that they will have teachers who will help them begin their school career with joy.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Holy Teacher, we pray for students who are leaving home to attend school elsewhere. Keep them safe and

healthy – emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We ask that Christian young people and Christian campus organizations be filled with love and

understanding for students who don’t know you. Give them your effective ways to reach out to many.

Prayer Leader’s Resource 2017 – 2018 15

Prayers for our ministry*: (Cover each aspect of your upcoming event using your invitation. Pray for those on your Planning Team. Add other requests to reflect your group’s needs.)

† Our Provider, we praise you for Karyn Pearson and Shirley Richardson and their gracious spirits that reach out to those who they direct with joy and wisdom. Thank you that RSVP Ministries is blessed with such valuable regional leaders.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Faithful One, thank you for the tremendous leadership with which you have blessed RSVP Ministries. We

pray for your Spirit’s filling of lead team members Donna Lamothe, Barbara Fuller, Maryanne Walker, and Rick Lamothe in each task they undertake for you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for each RSVP area representative. Thank you for their availability to their groups and for their

wisdom in providing cohesive spiritual leadership for lead teams and planning teams. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As our speakers share their faith stories this month, would you, Our Father, provide them with courage,

sensitivity to your Spirit and grace in their interactions with their audience? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Saviour, individually would you open each of our hearts and minds to those around us who need a personal

walk with you? Help us to live our lives before them in ways that reveal your love. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As each RSVP group makes plans for this fall session, please help us plan events that effectively draw

people who need to be reached with your love. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for the privilege of prayer and for those who encourage us in our prayer lives. Thank you for each

prayer leader, each regional prayer advisor and for our national prayer coordinator. Make their walk with you powerful.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As Bible studies begin this fall, would you, the Bible’s Author, make it real to each one involved? Use your

Word, and the material that we have in such abundance, to enhance our daily lives. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you, O Lord, for team members who share the responsibilities of our local ministry. Help our team

work to be effective in reaching out to the lost and weary ones around us. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As the first fund-raising gala is being planned, and many are invited to attend, we ask that the evening be a

time of joy, insight and generosity. Thank you for each one involved.

*For those praying who are not a part of RSVP Ministries, we suggest that you consider using these ministry prayers as guides for the activities you are involved with.

September Planning Team Devotional God’s Hand Delivers and Directs Us

Meryl Bishop, South Portland, ME, former Prayer Consultant, Stonecroft U.S.A.

God’s Word for Today: Psalm 139:9-10 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there shall your hand lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. (Psalm 139:9-10, NKJV) The steps of good men are directed by the Lord. He delights in each step they take. If they fall it isn't fatal, for the Lord holds them with his hand. (Psalm 37:23-24, LB) I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. (Isaiah 41:13 NIV) Psalm 139 tells us that God knew us before we were born. He knows how long we will live. He knows when we sit down and when we stand up. He knows our thoughts and the exact words we will speak. He knows when we leave the house and when we return. He knows when we are asleep and when we are awake; when we travel or move to a new location. He sees us even in the dark. No matter where we are or what we do, God is there. As the psalmist says in verse 6, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, ...” God knows all about us, but he doesn’t leave us to fend for ourselves. He wants to be a part of all that we go through. He does this by placing his hand upon us. He promises that no matter what our circumstances, his hand will lead us and his right hand will hold us. There is nothing more reassuring than the grip of a friend’s hand when you are going through a difficult time. There is nothing more heartwarming than when a child, in an act of confidence and trust, slips his hand into yours. How much more reassuring to know that God is holding your hand. Many years ago, Minnie Louise Haskins penned these words: “I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’ And he replied: ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.’” Whether standing at the gate of the year, or the year is half gone, it’s never too late to take hold of God’s hand. Hold tight to him today. Prayer Plan: As you begin this ministry year, ask your group to picture their hands in God’s hands. Pray that all of you will continue through the year with this picture in your minds, and hearts knowing that he is holding you tightly.

October Prayer Connection Devotional Thanksgiving

Donna Lamothe, Canmore, AB, Executive Director of RSVP Ministries

Reflecting on God’s Word: Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. (Mark 6:41 NLT) Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to his disciples, who distributed the bread to the crowd. They ate as much as they wanted. (Mark 8:6, 8 NLT) On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you.” (1 Corinthians 11:23 NLT) This past spring I travelled from coast to coast in my RV, covering mile after mile on the RSVP cross-Canada tour, connecting with volunteers and leaders in our ministry, sharing changes and mutual encouragement. Sometimes I would be a little weary from the travel but would be revived and refreshed by smiling faces extending food and drinks prepared for us all. There were many precious moments. One of those times was connecting with a dear ministry partner and friend in Listowel. In anticipation of our arrival, she had baked her signature tea biscuits just an hour beforehand, so we would partake of the freshest possible treat together. I sat beside her, plate and heart full, my tea biscuit loaded with butter. Thanksgiving is one of those times that fills both my stomach and my heart. So many things come together to make the event: mouth-watering smells; delicious morsels hitting my taste buds; the bustle of serving and celebrating with family and friends. It is always a meal to be remembered. Jesus knew the needs of the people and the power of the meal. The Gospel of Mark recounts two stories where, with blessing and thanksgiving to God the Father, Jesus breaks bread and then multiplies it exponentially to feed thousands. Who could ever forget those meals? (Mark 6: 41 and Mark 8:6, 8) Jesus wants to do more than feed our stomachs however. His signs and wonders speak to us of greater spiritual truths, the kind that are intended to feed our souls. One of Jesus’ most recognized illustrations helps us make the leap from filling our stomachs to filling our hearts. During Jesus’ last meal with his disciples, he gives thanks and breaks the fresh bread, a symbol of his body, about to be broken for us. He wants us to remember through this meal. (1 Corinthians 11:23) This Thanksgiving, as we serve our steaming basket of tea biscuits or buns, let’s remember, let’s give thanks and let’s continue to share spiritual food with the hungry.

Worship Meditation: John 6: 35, 51 Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35 NLT) “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.” (John 6:51 NLT) Prayers of Worship: Bread of Life, few of us in Canada are without enough bread to satisfy our appetites. Thank you for the abundance we know because of the goodness of our land. Thank you that you know the need for sustenance for our bodies and you know the need of our spirits to share it with others. We are wonderfully made. Bread of Heaven, many people in Canada are without enough of you in their lives today and for eternity. We praise you for being available for all to partake of the life you have to offer. Thank you that you long for all to accept your offer of eternal life. You, O Lord, have made the possibility of living forever so easily available. All we need to do is to come to you and believe and we will never be hungry or thirsty again. How we praise you and worship you, our Living Lord.

Prayers of Request for October Prepared by Karen Erickson

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving … (Psalm 95:2 ESV) If only we all had voices of angels and the glory and praise that we give you could sound as beautiful as we wish! But, with our own voices, we do come into your presence with thanksgiving, honour and praise. Prayers for our world:

† We praise you, Great Provider, for the abundance of our country. Thank you for the fertile soils that produce food and provision for us. Instill in us the desire and ability to care well for it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Our store shelves are stocked with so many choices just so we can find exactly what we desire! How

blessed we are. Thank you. Help us to know ways and have means to consciously share with those in need. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for those who have so little of our country’s abundance. We ask for your care for the homeless,

those who are alone, and for those who are searching for their place in life. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Just because we have provisions for our bodies does not mean we have the greatest things that are

needed. While we thank you for all we do have, we also ask that our hearts will desire that which is most needed – a personal relationship with the Saviour of the world.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Canada is a blessed land. We pray for those who govern us, that they will have wisdom and insight to

provide not only for all our citizens but also to share with a needy world. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you, great Creator, for the amazing beauty of Canada, from east to west and from south to north.

Thank you for the goodness and kindness of the people of Canada. We pray that these blessings cause many to give you praise.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As this year of celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday draws to a close, we remember those who first lived in

this land. We ask for your provision and care for all First Nations and Aboriginal communities, for wisdom for their leaders and for government officials given the mandate to work together with them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We thank you for the youth of our country. How beautiful, gifted and able they seem. We lift them before the

One who loves them greatly. Would you help them to know you and to desire to walk in the plans you have for them?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We ask, especially, for the young people who find life hard to live. Bring help and comfort into the lives of

those contemplating suicide or who turn to alcohol or drugs. Bring the good news of Jesus’ unconditional love into their hearts.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † There are many who are new to this land of good things, those who have suffered much and come to us for

help and healing. We pray for them and for those who are choosing to assist, befriend and provide guidance for them.

Prayers for our ministry*: (Cover each aspect of your upcoming event using your invitation. Pray for each person on your planning team by name. Add other prayer requests to reflect your group’s needs.)

† As you work in each of our lives, O Lord, help us to recognize your presence and your working out our own faith stories. Thank you that we can share you by sharing our stories either one to one or one to many.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for the men and women who have boldly shared their lives with thousands by being a part of the

RSVP film series. Thank you that you are using these stories to make a difference to people from many walks of life.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As our outreach meetings are planned, use these opportunities to touch the lives of those who need to hear

of your love and provision for them personally. Give to each planning team member, and each believer who attends our events, a deep longing to be used to draw others to you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for those who plan the features each month. Thank you for the feature presenters that give time,

effort and care in their presentations to our groups. Bless them for all that they give to us. Especially show them your great appreciation for them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As we express our appreciation to you this Thanksgiving month for the abundance you give to us, help us to

desire to give back to you by supporting RSVP Ministries financially. Give us insight into how valuable our giving is to many.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for our prayer connections, our outreach events and our Bible studies and the awareness they

give us of the need for you of those around us. Keep us conscious of our purpose and focus on sharing you with those without you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As our ultimate Leader and Guide, you have provided our ministry with those who carry out your will for

reaching the lost in Canada. Thank you, especially, for Donna Lamothe’s wisdom and insight as she serves you as our executive director.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As new RSVP groups are formed and as they reach out in unique ways, we all thank you for their leadership

and for their longing to draw their friends, families and co-workers into a personal relationship with you. Bless them, encourage them, use them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you, Father, for those on our board of directors who give so willingly and expertly to maintain the

effectiveness of RSVP Ministries. As they meet this month with Donna Lamothe, would you be their guide and director?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † O Lord, as many in eastern Canada meet for Connection events this fall, would you inspire, encourage and

enlighten each one who attends? Enable Shirley Richardson and Karyn Pearson to connect in meaningful ways with these Connection group leaders.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *For those praying who are not a part of RSVP Ministries, we suggest you consider using these ministry prayers as guides for the activities you are involved with.

October Planning Team Devotional Just Family

Karen Erickson, Orleans, ON, RSVP National Prayer Coordinator God’s Word for Today: Romans 12:10 Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. (Romans 12:10 NLT) Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. (Romans 12:10 ESV) I grew up in a small town in southern Illinois – actually it was a rural community in the oilfields of southern Illinois. We lived far from any extended family so for most holidays there were just the seven of us to celebrate. I don’t think we (or I) ever truly appreciated all the work my mother put into making those holidays special for just us. My mother was a great cook so our meals were wonderful and abundant. On Thanksgiving especially, the table was laden with traditional mouth-watering dishes. I am trying to remember what my favourite would have been. Strangely, I think it was that little piece of the turkey, right on the ‘hip’ that was the tenderloin of the turkey – ummm, so tender and juicy! I didn’t appreciate all that Thanksgiving meant to me until I was away from home at university for the first time. We were given Thanksgiving Thursday off but not Friday so to go home for the whole weekend meant that I would miss one of the weekly chemistry tests. But I had to go so I was willing to forfeit a grade and take a zero! I realized that, when making the sacrifice to go home, it was more than the food that was important. It was being with my family. I needed them. Today, I continue to live away from extended family. Our daughters and son-in-law and grandsons come for holidays, and we celebrate well, I think. But, in between their visits, God has supplied family for me – his family. I am so blessed to have many believing friends that are brothers and sisters to me and who are there to fill spots in my life that family could fill. Serving with RSVP Ministries/Stonecroft/Christian Women’s Clubs has been a great part of this family life. I am thankful for their role in my life. I value each hour spent, each effort made, each challenge met, because it has been my ‘family’ doing it together. I am thankful to be a part of the Family of God. Prayer Plan: Take time to be thankful for one another and for the honour and support that is received from each. Pray that each one serving in your group feels loved and appreciated as a sibling in God’s family.

November Prayer Connection Devotional Soul Restoration

Karyn Pearson, Lorette, MB RSVP Regional Director (Western Canada) and National Training Director

Reflecting on God’s Word: The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:1-4 NIV) Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders. (Deuteronomy 33:12 NIV) “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink – even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk – it’s all free! Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. (Isaiah 55:1-2 NLT) I have always loved the visual of Psalm 23 – the idea of a good, loving Shepherd caring for his weak, feeble sheep. It has comforted me, when I have felt weak, as I faced dark periods in my life when I didn’t understand or couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. This passage has brought me great comfort knowing God would lead me gently to those right paths beside those still waters. However, one day as I was reading this verse for the umpteenth time, a few words jumped off the page and totally stopped me in my tracks. It read; “He makes me lie down in green pastures”. He leads us – but he also makes us! I was reminded of the days when I put my young children to bed knowing they were over-tired even though they begged me, through their tears, to let them stay up. There are times when God makes us lie down. He doesn’t ask our permission. He takes full liberty, like parents do, to change our circumstances because he knows what he is after – a restored soul. At times we are so busy living life that we haven’t even noticed, like our children, we are actually over-tired. We are spent and worn out. Our calendars are full of activity and responsibility yet we can’t remember the last time we met with God – there’s just nothing left over to give Him. At first we resist – we may even go kicking and screaming, begging God to reconsider. But then, when we finally give up and surrender our will to his, we discover the pastures are truly lush and green. Spending time in that quiet place, free from distraction with the lover of our souls, we find the rest we have been longing for all along!

Prayer Leader’s Resource 2017 – 2018 23

Worship Meditation: Matthew 11:28-29 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls”. (Matthew 11:28-29 NLT) Prayers of Worship: We thank you Lord that you are a good, good Father. Everything you do for us and to us is for our good, because your word says that you are for us and not against us. We commit our lives afresh to you. We trust you to lead us, to mold us and to make us according to your will. Thank you, Lord, that we can trust you even when it hurts – even when life doesn’t make sense and we would rather do it our way. Help us in those times not to depend on our own understanding but to commit all our ways to you knowing that all your ways are perfect. Lord, we give you our highest praise. Everything we have and everything that we are is because of you! We love you and pray that you would be glorified and lifted up in our lives! .

He shall have dominion also from sea to sea …. (Psalm 72:8 AV) Great Lord, continue to rule and reign over this land. Be at work in the hearts and lives of all Canadians from sea to sea to sea. Prayers for our world:

† With grateful hearts, we ask for your blessings and protection on those who serve Canada in our military. Be at work in their lives to help them to know the Sovereign God who loves and appreciates them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for the families of serving men and women who are away from home and from those who love

them. We pray, especially, for children whose father or mother can’t be with them to hear their joys and sorrows.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you, all-knowing God, for the communication advances we have today that help those serving away

to keep in touch and to feel a part of their families and homes. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † For those who have loved and protected Canada and Canadians in our past, we give you praise and

thanksgiving. Especially for those who sacrificed their lives so that today we can know freedom, we thank you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for peace in our broken world. For those whose desires seem to be so evil and destructive, we pray

for your intervening hand to redirect their hearts and minds. For those who have suffered because of them, we ask for your healing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Sovereign Lord, we pray for leaders in Canada, the United States and throughout our world – political

leaders, business leaders, religious leaders and all who can listen to your voice giving direction to their power.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for good, helpful neighbours. Enable us, with your love, to both accept their friendship and to be

friends to them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As we go about our daily lives, Gentle Saviour, give us your eyes of love through which to view those we

come in contact with – physicians, grocery store clerks, people walking their dogs. Use us to show your compassion.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for the men and women in the media. Without realizing it, perhaps, they have great power over our

thinking and that of our children. We ask that they be honourable and truthful in using this advantage. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use them mightily to

make a difference in the hearts of those who desperately need you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Give us creative ways to use the excellent training books on leadership, leading small groups and sharing

our story. Help us to see ways others outside our ministry can benefit from them too. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As we use today’s social media and its draw on our world, we pray for our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,

YouTube and website. We ask that those who manage these, would know your blessing. Compel those who search on the web to find your message of love.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As Donna Lamothe works on the inSPIRE Journey material, prepare those who long to journey to God and

to wholeness to be open to its power in their life journeys. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for the thoughtful and enthusiastic role our director of advancement, Rick Lamothe, carries. Give

him valuable contacts that can benefit from, as well as donate to, RSVP Ministries. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † You who love to give joy and happiness, would you instill in each of our outreach events the ‘joy of the

Lord’? Help each person who attends to leave feeling uplifted and closer to you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Today, please place on my heart the name of someone who needs a relationship with you, Heavenly

Father. Guide me in my prayers for them and my interactions with them. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

November Planning Team Devotional A Sure Investment

Sheila Giguere, Ramsayville, ON

God’s Word for Today: 1 Timothy 4:8; 1 Corinthians 15:58 Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come. (1 Timothy 4:8 NLT) So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. (1 Corinthians 15:58 NLT) In April 2017, my fitness class and I decided to embark on a Canada Day Challenge. Our plan was to regularly do an activity that would raise our heart rate and, eventually, improve our level of cardiovascular fitness. We started with exercising 60 minutes a week and gradually increased our time, hoping to reach 150 minutes a week by July 1st. It seemed fitting as we would be celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday. We didn’t know if we would succeed as two and a half hours seemed like a lot of time to invest every week. We were busy with so many other things. Nor were we sure that we would accomplish the level of endurance that we were hoping for. The only thing we did know for certain was that completing this project would require commitment and perseverance. Training to improve fitness is not new to our generation. In fact, the apostle Paul wrote about it in one of his letters to Timothy, comparing the results of physical and spiritual pursuits. Perseverance was a way of life for Paul. Used and inspired by God to write much of the New Testament, he was wholeheartedly committed to the Lord Jesus Christ. For him, every hardship that he endured was an opportunity to spread the Gospel, whether he was being tossed around on a ship on the Adriatic Sea or chained in a dark prison. His commitment was for life. There would be no retirement from his calling. Writing to believers in the young Corinthian church, he taught his fellow sojourners how to wisely invest their lives, encouraging them to be strong Christians, completely devoted to the Lord’s work. Like his, their investment would be great but they could be sure that the results of their efforts would not be in vain and would last for eternity. Prayer Plan: As leaders in your group, do you consider the time, energy and talents you are investing in others valuable? Pray that each of those who serve in your group will be convinced that their efforts are prized by God and that they are of eternal value.

December Prayer Connection Devotional The Christmas Story for the First Time

Donna Lamothe, Canmore, AB, Executive Director of RSVP Ministries

Reflecting on God’s Word: Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger … (Luke 2:4-7 NIV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:1-3 NIV) The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:9-12 NIV) My husband tells of hearing the “Christmas story” for the very first time on his first visit to Newfoundland to spend Christmas with my family. My dad read the story of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem from the Gospel of Luke and when Rick received his own Bible for Christmas he was able to go on and learn so much more about Jesus. I was very familiar with Luke’s Gospel and his account of Mary’s pregnancy and Jesus’ birth. Luke was a doctor and he would have been drawn to the physical aspects of Jesus’ life and miracles. (Luke 2:4-7) On the other hand, the Gospel writer, John, began his account of Jesus’ life by drawing our attention to Jesus’ timeless nature, his participation in creation and his oneness with God the Father. (John 1:1-3) We are presented with Jesus’ physical birth and death in Scripture as well as his glorious eternal nature that transcends time and place. Both Gospel accounts of Jesus’ beginnings accurately identify our Saviour. What makes Jesus’ physical presence on earth so spectacular is that he gave up honour and glory in heaven to be crucified on a cross like a criminal, for your sin and mine. Through Jesus’ sacrifice we have access to God now and for eternity! (John 1:9-12) Christmas represents this tremendous truth. This season as many of us read the story of Jesus’ birth from Luke, let’s pray it would have the profound impact on someone you or I know as it did for Rick all those years ago. Let’s also consider grappling with Jesus as seen through the lens of John through participation in the very first RSVP Bible study. “Tell us about Jesus, John … we want to know more …”

Prayer Leader’s Resource 2017 – 2018 28

Worship Meditation: Luke 2:28-32 Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people. He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!” (Luke 2:28-32 NLT) Prayers of Worship: Sovereign Lord, just as Simeon waited with great expectation until he held your Son in his arms, we wait with great expectation for Jesus’ coming again. We praise you that you always keep your promises and some day Jesus will come in the honour and glory that he gave up when he came to us the first time. Light of the World, thank you for revealing God to the nations. Thank you for being light to me so that I too can know you as my saviour. Thank you that I can be a part of revealing you to others this Christmas. One and Only Son, as the story of your birth is heard throughout the world, it never loses its power. Men and women, boys and girls still listen in awe and know that they too are loved by you. How we praise you!

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, … (James 1:17 NIV) For the gift of your good and perfect Son, Father, we give you praise and thanksgiving. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for this Gift from above. Prayers for our world:

† We were created for intimacy with you, Loving Father. The sending of your Son shows that so clearly. Help us, as your children, to reflect this by creating and maintaining loving connections with one another.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As we think of the most precious gift you have given us, continue to give us a burning desire to share him

with others. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Christmas is an easier time to invite our neighbours and family members to join us at events that focus on

the love that is shown in the birth of Jesus. Open doors for us to extend these invitations so that they may make the important RSVP.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Not all find Christmas a time of joy and goodness. Would you be present with each one who struggles with

exceptional needs at this time? Give them a sense of your presence, your understanding, and your comfort. Help them to still adore you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Prince of Peace, in so many marriages and families around us there is no peace, no understanding. As

Christmas is observed, would you reveal yourself and build bridges where there are only walls? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you, Father, for the people who give so much of themselves to the disadvantaged. Thank you for

their sacrifices on behalf of those who have little. Would you abundantly bless them all with your grace? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As winter weather begins in most regions of our country, we ask that you would protect those who serve our

communities. Keep safe and wise, our first responders, bus drivers, road crews, crossing guards, and so many that we rely on.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray, Heavenly Father, for the children and the teens at this exciting time of year. We ask for your

protection over each one, for your provision for their needs and your blessings on their dreams. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As we gather as families and friends to celebrate your birth, Lord, please help us to open our homes and

hearts to those who are strangers in our communities. Show us meaningful ways to extend your love to them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for Prime Minister Trudeau, his family and all the members of parliament and their loved ones. We

ask that they would recognize your love and gifting to them. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

† We praise you, gracious Lord, for the ministry year you have given us as a local group and as a national work. Thank you for the hundreds of people who have heard the good news of salvation and have responded by asking you into their lives.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † At the end of the year, we recognize the financial needs RSVP Ministries has. We ask that each of us

involved will consider your guidance in contributing to these needs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for RSVP’s director of advancement, Rick Lamothe, and the wisdom and energy with which he

approaches the needs that exist for the ministry. Bless him with your direction, sensitivity, and purpose. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Much has been accomplished for you through the guidance and dedication of our regional directors, Shirley

Richardson and Karyn Pearson. Thank you for their dedication to the women involved as our foundation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Prayer has always been the strength of RSVP. Our dependence on you is the reason that people’s lives are

changed forever. We praise you for the 400+ people who pray monthly and specifically as our Prayer Force. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As we look back on all that has happened this year – the RV Tour, our first Bible study, the first fund-raising

Gala, new film series – we bow in gratitude for the leadership and inspiration we have had through Donna Lamothe, our executive director and director of ministries, Barbara Fuller.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We, in the local groups, are so dependent on those who so graciously and wisely serve us in the Edmonton

office. Thank you for them. Bless them and their loved ones as they celebrate the birth of Jesus this year. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As we pray for our own planning team and event in this month of celebration, we also pray for those across

Canada who carry the same responsibilities and joys. Would you bless them greatly and fill them with the certainty that they are loved and appreciated?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you, Giver of all good gifts, for those who present your message through music and song at our

events. Thank you for their graciousness in sharing their gifts with us and for you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † The story of Jesus is made real through his acting in the lives of your people. Thank you for those who

share their faith stories month by month. Continue to use their experiences with you to reveal your love to others.

December Planning Team Devotional The Light of the World

Lorraine Myrholm, Edmonton, AB God’s Word for Today: Isaiah 9:2, 6 The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine. For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:2, 6 NLT) In the Northwest Territories where I grew up, December was one of the dark months. It was dark when we got up, dark as we walked to school and home again, dark when we went to bed. The darkness impacted every part of life causing lethargy, despondency, even depression. Those of us fortunate enough to have electricity could dispel at least some of the darkness, but those who did not could hope for nothing more than dim dusk-light from kerosene lamps. So, you can imagine how the first glimpse of the sun’s return, even a sliver appearing for a few minutes on the southern horizon, gave rise to joyful celebration. This picture of the natural world mirrors the spiritual. Creation began with light, but sin entered man’s heart; and since then, spiritual darkness has held mankind in its grip. People live in confusion, despair, aimlessness and hopelessness. But God, the Father of heavenly Light, had a plan to restore light to his creation. Isaiah prophesied the coming restoration when he said, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” (Isaiah 9:2) He further describes that great light in verse 6. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” This month as we celebrate the fulfillment of God’s promise, the coming of Jesus Christ, we are reminded that he who said “I am the light of the world,” also said, “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 NIV) We, who walk in the light of life, have a responsibility to reflect the light that changes everything. Keeping it to ourselves is not an option in a world that so needs transforming light.

The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin,

the Light of the world is Jesus!

Like sunshine at noonday, His glory shone in;

The Light of the world is Jesus!

Come to the light, ’tis shining for thee; Sweetly the light has dawned upon me;

Once I was blind, but now I can see:

The Light of the world is Jesus!

(Philip P. Bliss) Prayer Plan:

Pray for ways for us to bring others to the Light of the World this Christmas and in the coming year.

January Prayer Connection Devotional Powerful Truths

Barbara Bedley, Ottawa, ON, Regional Chair Advisor Reflecting on God’s Word: pray continually; (1 Thessalonians 5:17 NIV) Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2 NLT) and we sent Timothy to visit you. He is our brother and God’s co-worker in proclaiming the Good News of Christ. We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through. But you know that we are destined for such troubles. (1Thessalonians 3:2-3 NLT) The Bible teaches us that we are to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The truth of these verses was really brought home to me last July 22nd. As I was driving home after a bone-tiring and emotional time of selling my parents’ home, cleaning it out and moving them into a retirement home, I got a call from my husband. He was at the lake by himself, wasn’t well and decided to drive home. He thought he had bronchitis. By the time I got home he was collapsed on the bed. I immediately called for an ambulance. By 7:00 p.m. he was in hospital and by 9:00 p.m. he was intubated and in a coma. The doctors didn’t know what was causing any of this. By the next morning the doctors told me to call our children; they felt that David was going to die. Dear friends came and prayed through the morning and afternoon. We read Galatians 6:2 together. Faithful family, friends here and from around the world, and my wonderful church prayed. First Thessalonians 3:2-3 made me exclaim, “WOW! How true.” I knew that, even though the doctors didn’t know what had shut all of David’s organs down or what had caused the sepsis and pneumonia, he was in God’s hands and God knew. I was encouraged by Facebook messages, emails, cards and beautiful flowers, each coming at just the right moment. I felt God upholding me! I saw miracles! There is no earthly reason for David to be here today except for the prayers that went up on his behalf. We prayed and God answered. God’s Word and spiritual songs uplifted me. I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I had God’s peace and grace in my life. I have learned that our God is faithful, true and trustworthy. I have also experienced the reality of these words: “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39 NKJV) Powerful truths and comfort from my loving God and heavenly Father!

Worship Meditation: Psalm 81:6 and Psalm 121:1-5a Now I will take the load from your shoulders; I will free your hands from their heavy tasks. (Psalm 81:6 NLT) I look up to the mountains – does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The LORD himself watches over you! (Psalm 121:1-5a NLT) Prayers of Worship: I praise you, the One Whose Love Endures, for never leaving our side especially when we carry great burdens. I worship you for taking the loads from my shoulders and freeing me. My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth! Who else could take the doubts, fears and heaviness of grave illness and give me peace – a peace that permits rest and sleep? Thank you! Sometimes my heart questions, “Where are you, Lord?” But then one of your children comes alongside and prays with me, brings me food or flowers or just a hug. Thank you for your presence through your children.

January Planning Team Devotional The God of Hope!

Raya Duggan, Bedford, NS

God’s Word for Today: Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing (through your experience of faith); that by the power of the Holy Spirit, you will abound in hope and overflow with confidence in His promises. (Romans 15:13, ESV with parenthesis from The Amplified Bible) While on a recent vacation in a warm climate, I made it my discipline to go walking early in the morning and to memorize scripture along the way. Doubting that I would be able to retain a Bible verse long enough to not only memorize but remember it later, off I went each morning. One morning the words of Romans 15:13 were written on a piece of paper that I carried with me. It came alive to me as I read it over and over, absorbing each phrase until it became embedded in my memory. I was filled with joy and hope simply by putting his amazing Word in my mind and “fixing” it there! God wants us to meditate on his Word and to think about it, rolling it over in our minds until we not only say it but apply it to our lives and actually live it! This exercise of memorizing Bible verses has made me fall in love with the God of the Bible all over again! You see, we can read and even study it every day and still not apply it to our lives. So I have taken that verse one step further, and turned it into a declaration for my life. “I declare that the God of hope is filling me with all joy and peace in believing (through my experience of faith); that by the power of the Holy Spirit, I abound in hope and I overflow with confidence in his promises. In Jesus’ name, amen.” Would you like to live a life filled with joy, peace, hope, and overflowing confidence in his promises? Has God promised you something and you are still waiting for it to come to pass? I invite you to try this age– old practice of memorizing and meditating on scripture and see how God will bless your life as you say it, learn it, pray it and receive it by the power of the Holy Spirit! Prayer Plan: Make a list of some of the hopes your planning team has for your outreach. As you think of these, pray Raya’s declaration claiming the power of the Holy Spirit to give you overflowing confidence in his promises.

February Prayer Connection Devotional What Does It Take to Believe?

Barb Fuller, Kamloops, BC, RSVP Director of Ministries

Reflecting on God’s Word: “Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” “Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”). Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she gave them his message.” (John 20:15-16, 18 NLT) “One of the disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came. They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” (John 20:24-25a NLT) Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” “My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed. (John 20:26-28 NLT) For some, faith seems to come easily. We may call them gullible or childlike. But then Jesus did say,” I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” (Mark 10:15) For others, faith grows from seeing evidence of the supernatural, the inexplicable. We may call them convinced. Then there are the skeptical whose worldview and understanding doesn’t allow for anything outside their experience or ability to explain. They say, “If I were in that situation, I would …” even though they never have been. They don’t listen, and they risk not hearing that voice say their name. But we mustn’t judge them or give up on them. Even the greatest saints took some convincing. For Mary Magdalene, it took an angel and then an encounter with a person who spoke her name as only one person could. (John 20:15-16, 18) For John and Peter, it took a story, an empty tomb, and then a personal encounter with a resurrected teacher. For Thomas, it took a story, and a tailor-made encounter that led him to worship. (John 20: 24-25a and John 20:26-28) For Paul, it took many stories, encounters with “nutcakes” who believed, and a blinding encounter and conversation with the One he felt so passionate about discrediting, and who spoke his name as no other ever had. What does it take to believe? God knows.

Prayer Leader’s Resource 2017 – 2018 38

But I would rather be a Mary, turning in trust and joy when I hear my name. The first time. And every time. And then… may my faith overflow into the story I share with others, so that they too might believe when they hear their name spoken as only Jesus can speak it. Worship Meditation: John 10:2-3 But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” (John 10:2-3 NLT) Prayers of Worship: Eternal One, never do you forget my name. You know me better than I know myself. Uniquely and personally you call to me. How great is that knowledge. I do praise and worship you. Thank you, my Shepherd, for your patience and love over me. Thank you that you give me the time and the way to learn to believe you and to believe in you. I praise you, Holy One, that you do not give up on me. Your search continues as long as it takes to find me and draw me into your fold. Thank you that you search for the lost ones that I love too.

insist on its own way, but instead rejoices with the truth, bears, believes, hopes, and endures all things and it never ends.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Jesus, you said we should love our neighbours as ourselves. Help us see our neighbours’ needs and care

for them in practical ways, even when it isn’t convenient or easy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Great God, we pray for the leaders of our provinces and territories. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Heavenly Father, we pray for Karen Erickson, our national prayer coordinator, and for the regional prayer

advisors. Keep their personal prayer lives fresh as they encourage us to pray. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Dear Lord, in this month when we think of love and hearts, may we not have hard hearts, but soft and tender

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Dear Lord, we pray for each person involved in RSVP Ministries, especially the volunteers. May they feel

February Planning Team Devotional A Lesson in Trust

Seleda Frey, Listowel, ON, Regional Prayer Advisor Western ON

God’s Word for Today: Psalm 56:3 But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. (Psalm 56:3 NLT) Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you. (Psalm 37:5 NLT) Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT) Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105 NLT) When you live in Canada you definitely have to count on winter snow storms. This is certainly true of southwestern Ontario. I can remember many times when our drive home was dangerous, even treacherous, with blowing snow and white outs. You notice I said our drive home. We usually have sense enough to stay home when the weather is bad, but if we get caught somewhere else, our instinct is to get home. I’ve thought perhaps I’m wise enough not to get caught in a storm any more, but this winter we once again faced a blizzard. It came quickly and unexpectedly. For part of the way, we could follow other vehicles but, when we turned off a main road, we had one country block to go that was just horrendous. The snow was blowing across the road and I couldn’t see a thing. My husband was driving, but he couldn’t see much either. Finally, I opened my window and I could see the edge of the road. I directed him as best I could. One time I was just ready to say, “You’ve got to come my way, I see way too much road”, when he felt the front wheel on his side go over the edge. Thankfully he was able to back up and proceed. I wonder if perhaps an angel was there to push. We got home safely and then I thought, “We had to trust each other”. I had to trust his driving and he had to trust my directing. Then I thought about how we are to trust the Lord and his Word as we go through life, whether we go through storms or need guidance and direction:

• We can trust Him to help us every day with everything we do. (Psalm 37:5) • We are not to trust our wisdom, but seek his will and then he will show us which way to go. (Proverbs 3:5,6) • When we are afraid, we are to trust Him. (Psalm 56:3) I was afraid in that snow storm and, while I’m not sure I was

doing a good job of trusting, I did pray. My prayers were very short – like “Oh, Lord!” or “Help!” but God heard them.

• God’s Word guides us and provides light for our path. (Psalm 119:105) While my husband and I had to trust each other, we were actually not very trustworthy. Neither one of us was able to see the road, so we could easily have ended up in the ditch. But God can see the way ahead, and he knows exactly what’s best for us. We can trust Him completely. Prayer Plan: As you make plans, who do you trust the most to ensure you have a successful event – each other, your guest feature, musician or speaker? Commit your plans totally to the LORD.

March Prayer Connection Devotional A God of Second Chances Irene Williams, Ottawa, ON

Reflecting on God’s Word: So they arrested him and led him to the high priest’s home. And Peter followed at a distance. The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there. A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, “This man was one of Jesus’ followers!” But Peter denied it. “Woman,” he said, “I don’t even know him!” After a while someone else looked at him and said, “You must be one of them!” “No, man, I’m not!” Peter retorted. About an hour later someone else insisted, “This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too.” But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered that the Lord had said, “Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly. (Luke 22:54-62 NLT) We have a God of second chances. While people often keep a record of our wrongdoings, God remembers them no more once we admit and confess them. While people look on the outward appearance, God looks on the heart. A classic example is Peter’s denial found in Luke 22:54-62. It is one of the most comforting and touching accounts of a God who forgives and reinstates those who mourn over their blunders, thus freeing them from a life of regret and remorse.

I walked with you and all my life was changed. I talked with you and everything I said became refined.

I listened to your words and knew they were the words of God. I looked into your eyes and caught a glimpse of what my life

could be when lined with yours.

You took my hand and told me where to go and when to stop and rest. You pointed to a world that needs your touch of love through me.

You said that giving is more blessed than waiting to receive. You gave me a new name and set my feet upon a rock.

I knew that I had found the way that I would serve you to the end.

And yet, before the cock did crow my heart was turned from thee. I said I never knew the one who came to set me free.

And then you turned your eyes on me as they were leading you away. The tender look that I did see was more than words could say.

It broke my heart; it broke my will, because I knew you loved me still. And I have never been the same since.

- Peter

Worship Meditation: John 21:15-17, 19c After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep … Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.” (John 21:15-19 NLT) Prayers of Worship: Saviour, when our actions have broken your heart, you so tenderly look on us and forgive our sin. How can we ever thank you enough? We worship you with our hearts broken and contrite. It was our rebellion and fear that you took on your perfect self when you died on the cross. What else can we do but bow in worship and in thanksgiving for such love? Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are not only a God of second chances but third and fourth and fifth and … That is why you died, isn’t it? You knew that we would always need your forgiveness, your forgetting and your willingness to accept our service afterwards. With humility and love, we praise you.

O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge. (Psalm 62:8 NLT) To you who hold our times in your hands, we give you praise and honour. As our days continue, help our hearts to trust in you as our forever refuge. Prayers for our world:

† Thoughts of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us fill our minds and hearts. We, who are so unworthy of such love, ask that you would accept our desire to walk with you intimately and continually.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † All around us there is much darkness and great need. It is a time in our world when you are not generally

Give us, as your people, the ability to be your lights and your love to those around us. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We ask, Sovereign Head, that you would give direction and harmony to your church. Give to those in

As

Easter approaches, give us opportunities to share how great is your love. Holy Spirit, control each word that we share.

longer daylight. You, who are infinite, help us to honour and glorify you with each of our moments. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Much is happening in the world, sometimes it is for good and sometimes it seems evil wins. We pray for our

† Each month hundreds of your children, Father, meet to enjoy and grow from an event planned for the purpose of sharing your love. We ask for each one that their hearts will be burdened for the lives of lost friends and loved ones.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Many businesses and individuals give of their time and expertise as they bring our features each month.

Would you bless them for their efforts and, especially, would you draw them to a personal walk with you? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We have good ways of telling others of our outreach events. Help us to be wise and creative in our sharing

of such exciting happenings. Guide us in telephoning, emailing, using local newspapers, and in making appealing invitations.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Watching and interacting with the RSVP Film Collection changes lives. Thank you for using them so greatly

and in so many ways. Give each of us the insight of the difference the films can make to someone we care about.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † So many of us in this ministry have stories of how you are working in our lives. Encourage us to be willing to

share you with others whether it is over a cup of coffee or in a group. Keep us sensitive to your presence, Holy Spirit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for the guidelines that have been made available for helping us put together our stories of your

work in us. Thank you for Karyn Pearson and her team of speaker coordinators and coaches across Canada that inspire and direct us.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We thank you, Father, for those you have gifted to write stories and experiences. Thank you for those who

write the inspiring devotionals for our prayer times each month. Use their words in our lives. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As the writing of resource material for use in our ministry continues, we ask that you would make what is

written vital to each who reads and considers it. Bless those who follow your guidance, especially Donna Lamothe and Barbara Fuller.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † When resource materials are produced there are many people involved. Thank you for each one and for

their gifts that are being used to honour you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Your word is so very alive and real to us today. Thank you for the Bible and for each study that we have

available to us. As we study together, we thank you for the freedom we have to do so and the closeness to each other it brings.

March Planning Team Devotional March – the Lion and the Lamb Month

Verena Diefenbacher, Crysler, ON, Eastern ON/QC Speaker Coordinator God’s Word for Today: Isaiah 53:7, 4-5 He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. (Isaiah 53:7 NLT) Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. (Isaiah 53:4-5 NLT) Have you ever heard the “Lion and Lamb” analogy of the month of March? If March starts like a lion, it will end like a lamb, or if it comes in like a lamb, it will go out like a lion! Yes, it is often one or the other! We love the lamb, so warm and gentle, exactly what we are longing for! But once nature bursts into new life it’s like a powerful lion that cannot be stopped, and winter is chased away and conquered for good! The lion is amazing! Don’t you just love the imagery? I can’t help but also think of the wonderful pictures and imageries the Bible uses of the lion and the lamb. We can’t miss the Old Testament accounts that the lamb was one of the sacrificial animals used to atone for the sins of the peoples. An innocent creature had to die to cover people’s sins by its shed blood. When the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, the blood of a lamb had to be put on the doorpost of the house, so that the angel of death would pass over and they would be saved. What an incredible foreshadowing of what God would provide for a lost humanity! John the Baptist saw Jesus approaching and he called out with a loud voice: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world!” When Jesus was standing trial, the prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled: read Isaiah 53:7 then Isaiah 53:4-5. The lamb is JESUS! He became our sacrificial lamb to die for our sins on the cross of Golgotha. And then He rose and is alive today! As the Jewish people still remember Passover, we too celebrate our salvation and share our faith stories with those we can reach. The story doesn’t end with the lamb, of course. Jesus entered this world as the lamb, but he will return as the Lion of Judah! When he comes back as he has promised, he will be the Lord of lords and the King of kings! A lion no one can defeat! He came as a lamb 2000 years ago, but he will soon return as a lion! Prayer Plan: Is your heart burdened for the lost? Are you eagerly awaiting Jesus’ return? Pray for those you know who are not ready to welcome the Lion of Judah.

April Prayer Connection Devotional Beyond the Sunset

Judy Cobham, Kingston, ON

Reflecting on God’s Word: The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. (Psalm 19:1) What are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? (Psalm 8:4) I love the beauty of nature. Each changing season brings with it new wonders and reminds us of our Creator God who spoke them all into existence. The sound of the first robin’s song in spring, the fragrance of lilacs and apple blossoms in the air, the beautiful colours in autumn and the sparkling diamonds in the snow all delight our senses. But to me the most spectacular of them all is the sunset. It has always amazed me that not only has the majestic God of the universe made all of this for our enjoyment, but he is intimately involved in our personal lives as well. My youngest daughter, who had Down syndrome, loved sunsets too, and would often call me to gaze with her at a gorgeous evening sky. Three years ago she developed serious health issues that made it necessary for her to remain in hospital for an extended time. I was so grateful that the water view from her window allowed us both to continue to marvel at the setting sun. We enjoyed many evenings together doing just that. When she took a bad turn last fall and was sent to ICU, there was only a small window with no pretty view. But the evening before she went home to be with the Lord, he gave us the most amazing gift – a glorious sunset just above the buildings and trees, and the glow filled her room. Another daughter took a picture that we were able to use on the funeral card a few days later. There is an old hymn called “Beyond the Sunset” (by Virgil P. Brock) that is a comfort to me now as it is a reminder of the wonderful salvation that is ours through Jesus Christ. Because of what he has done, I have the assurance that not only is my sweet little daughter safe in his presence, but one glad day I will be reunited with her “beyond the sunset, forever more.”

Worship Meditation: Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17 NIV) Prayers of Worship: You, Lord my God, take great delight in me. You even have a love song that is about me! But you also love, delight in, and rejoice over us as a group. That, too, is uplifting and beautiful. Thank you. The wonder of your love for each and every one of us overwhelms us. How magnificent is your love, how very intimate it is. We praise you with humble hearts. Creator-God, your creation, even in our so very imperfect world, is inspiring, so satisfying to our souls. There is something that you made that is extra special to each of us. It is almost as if you made it just for us. Thank you, thank you.

April Planning Team Devotional Why? or Who?

Shirley Richardson, Walkerton, ON RSVP Regional Director (Eastern Canada) and National Connections Director

God’s Word for Today: Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. (Isaiah 41:10 NLT) Driving away from our home, raindrops were pelting our windshield while the brightest of sunshine was pouring in my side window. It made me think of our situation over the past few months with troubles and challenges showering down relentlessly. Yet, there was the incredibly bright sun of God’s presence in our lives despite the challenges. At the end of long days sprinkled with challenges, God would send a sunset, an amazing display of colours stretching out across the sky, the hope of better things to come. Not just once but day after day I would see his beautiful promise spread out across the sky. At this same time, a few of us were studying ‘Prayer Worth Repeating’, a Stonecroft Bible Study. Each week was another great lesson and then I came to ‘Why vs. Who’. It was the story of Job who had lost everything – his livelihood and wealth, his family and health – yet nothing distracted him from his full commitment to God. However, as his distress reached unbearable proportions, he questioned God. I’m not suggesting that our challenges were anywhere as great as Job’s; however, questioning God is a natural response when adversity piles up. God has compassion on our questions that arise from the depth of our sorrow and pain. Throughout chapters 38 and 39 of Job, God asks questions designed to show his sovereignty compared to Job’s frailty. As we read these chapters carefully and let the majesty and ability of God wash over us, we began to see that God’s questions to Job actually formed the most compassionate response he could have offered him. God reminded Job that he operates from a position of omniscience – past, present, future. Job was locked in his excruciating pain and couldn’t see the future God had awaiting him. God’s answer would prove to Job, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that God holds all things in his hand including , Job and the pain he was experiencing. God’s answer all those years ago is still our answer today. When we start to think ‘why’, we need to concentrate our thoughts on the ‘who’ of our circumstances; ‘why’ creates doubts, while ‘who’ creates confidence. Prayer Plan: Read Job 42: 3, 5 You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’ It is I – and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me … I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. (Job 42:3, 5 NLT) Pray for those in your personal lives and your group who are going through difficult times. Pray that they might see the Lord with their own eyes.

May Prayer Connection Devotional Delight Greatly in the Lord

Lorraine Myrholm, Edmonton, AB Reflecting on God’s word: I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. (Isaiah 61:10-11 NIV) The LORD is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him. (Nahum 1:7 NLT) Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. (James 1:17 NLT) But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) (Ephesians 2:4-5 NLT) There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12 NLT) “I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God.” What powerful words of testimony. Sometimes words like these come easily to our lips and sometimes not. When the sun is shining, the path we walk is smooth and our hearts are free from concern and worry it’s easy. But when the cares of life press us we can feel weariness instead of delight. When we’re busy serving and supporting others we might be tempted to say we don’t have much energy to rejoice. And yet, it’s in those very circumstances choosing to delight in the Lord can have tremendous impact. It is worth it! When I delight in the Lord my thoughts are turned from myself and my present circumstances or future fears to HIM. Psalm 1 tells us that when we delight in the law of the Lord we will be blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God]. Who wouldn’t want that? Such blessings come, not from our actions or attitudes, but from who our Lord is. HE is good. Regardless of whether people are good or evil; regardless of whether we accept his goodness or not; regardless of whether we live up to it or not – God is good! (Nahum 1:7) HE does not change. God states it very clearly in both the Old and New Testaments. We can rely completely on his consistency and his promises – God is unchangeable! (James 1:17) HE is merciful. Because of his mercy, not our worthiness, he gives us new life beginning here on earth and extending into eternity in his presence. (Ephesians 2:4-5) HE is our Saviour. He is not distant or unconcerned about our welfare. We are not left to try to find him. He made the way for us to be in relationship with him. We are his because he made us his. (Acts 4:12) Also, HE delights in us. Psalm 149:4 (NIV) tells us “ … He delights in those who come to him.” Today, knowing who he is, how he feels about us, and what he has done for us, will you join Isaiah in declaring “I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God.”?

Worship Meditation: Psalm 35:9-10a Then I will rejoice in the LORD. I will be glad because he rescues me. With every bone in my body I will praise him: “LORD, who can compare with you?” (Psalm 35:9-10a NLT) Prayers of Worship: Indeed, Lord, who can ever compare with you? Not only are you good, merciful, unchanging and our Saviour, but you love us! How very amazing you are. We do delight greatly in you. We praise you for adorning us with salvation and righteousness. We who are so unworthy of such grace humbly worship you. We delight greatly in you, the Lord. Our souls rejoice in you. All that you are makes us glad and with every bone in our bodies, every ounce of our strength, we praise you. Joining with Isaiah, with myriads of people throughout history and now with friends across Canada “we delight greatly in the Lord.”

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NLT) So often mothers are weary and carry heavy burdens, Jesus. Help us who know you to reach out to them with your message of rest for their souls and easy yokes and light burdens. Teach us so we can reach them. Prayers for our world:

† Help each of us to reach out to the hearts of so many mothers who work hard to love and care for their families all with their own abilities, Father. Give us your ways to show them that you are there to provide strength and grace.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † All moms need you, Jesus. Some mothers though, carry extra heavy loads. We pray for your patience,

wisdom, and extraordinary love for those who have special needs children, for those who are foster mothers, for those who are single moms, and for those who themselves have health issues.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Dear Father, we pray for the women around the world with no rights or choices, who have been victimized

simply because they are women. Lord, may each one cry out to you, the God who saves, to come and intervene in their lives and to set them free of those who use them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for the women of our indigenous peoples. As they face many uncertainties, especially with their

children, we ask that you would give them great wisdom and insight. Provide these women with gracious and godly advice.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As young people today are faced with the temptations of our society, we pray for their mothers or women

they can look up to. We pray that these women will have the understanding and guidance to protect our youth.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for the women in our governments that strive to exert their insights into governing our needy

society. As they serve us, please provide the daily support and wisdom that they need as women, as mothers, and as spouses.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As spring arrives, there are many couples making plans for weddings – such an exciting time for them. You

who authored the family, please give them a desire to begin their lives together by honouring you with their vows and intentions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Along with mothers, many things are celebrated in May – workers, laughter, Queen Victoria, teachers,

brothers and sisters. Give us, as your children, the joy of the Lord to share with others as we too celebrate with friends and family.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We thank you for those who teach our children. Thank you for school teachers, sports coaches, scout

leaders, Sunday school teachers, and caregivers. Bless them with your understanding of the best ways to work with the children.

† Dear Heavenly Father, we pray for RSVP leaders to be people of action because of how they have seen you move throughout their involvement. Father, please give each one a unique gift in drawing the lost toward you using RSVP resources, events, neighbourhood gatherings, studies, and your Word.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Dear Lord in Heaven, we lift each of the RSVP staff members to you with thanks for how you have gifted

them and used them in ministry in such a variety of ways. Protect each one from the evil one who will try to prevent the furthering of your Kingdom through their passion and your direction for RSVP Ministries.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Dear Father, in each of our daily walks, we ask for insight from you to see those you put in our paths as

Jesus would see them. Provide us with your love, humility and gentleness, and words of encouragement and hope in preparation for those God-incidents. We do thank you in advance for these times.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Our Protector, we ask that you would keep the families of all involved in our ministry safe and whole and

their relationships within those families grounded in you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for the love and support that we have from our families and friends as we serve in this ministry.

Keep us aware of the best ways to love them in return. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you, our God, for faithful women whose lives have been impacted by Stonecroft/RSVP but who are

no longer involved in the ministry. We pray that they might feel a continuing commitment to invite, inspire and invest in others through RSVP – gained strengths.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Father, as our newsletters go out each month, and as the RSVP Magazine is received, we pray that those

who read and peruse them will be blessed and drawn into a deeper understanding of how you are at work through our service for you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As the Bible studies, the RSVP films, and the inSPIRE Journeys are used in our communities, Holy Spirit,

impact each gathering with your presence and purpose. Bring hope and encouragement to many. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for Karyn Pearson and Shirley Richardson and for the training ministry they have. We ask that

you will use the leadership and speaker training opportunities to encourage many. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for those who serve on the board of directors for RSVP. May Planning Team Devotional Food from Heaven

Sue Ferguson, Brockville, ON God’s Word for Today: Psalm 40:1-3a and Psalm 3:4 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. (Psalm 40:1-3a NIV) I call out to the LORD, and he answers me from his holy mountain. (Psalm 3:4 NIV) I love the little hummingbirds but, once I finally got my feeder up I never seemed to be there to see them when they came to feed. The food was going down so I kept hoping to see one soon. Lately I had made a couple of serious mistakes in emails to people I care about and was beating myself up over that. One morning I stopped to look at the feeder as I did every morning, hoping to see a hummingbird. I'd prayed before to see them but since the email mistakes, my prayer was a little different. This time I said, 'Father, if there is any hope for me, send a hummingbird'. Immediately, a little dark one came to the feeder and drank several times as I stood there in tears. I left for the shower and when I came back and looked again, a little yellow one came and drank even longer. God didn’t want me to miss his answer. The God who created the universe cared enough about me and how I was feeling about myself to pick me up in love. And he is sovereign and powerful enough to direct a little hummingbird to my feeder, behind my trailer, in Prince Edward Island, at exactly the right time to be an answer to my prayer just as it ended. So, can we trust him in every area of our life and with everyone we love and everything we care about? Absolutely! And, is he caring and powerful enough to answer our prayers no matter how little or big they are? Absolutely! And, if he has called us to something requiring a lot of simple faith that’s way beyond our imagination, can we trust him with the results and how he will use us? Absolutely! And, will I always remember this hummingbird prayer and how his answer lifted me 'out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock'? Absolutely! Prayer Plan: Just as God showed up and answered this hummingbird prayer, rejoice in the fact that God hears and answers your prayers. Thank the Father for the miracles of his answers that are so personal and powerful and that demonstrate his incredible and unconditional love for you.

June Prayer Connection Devotional Sowing and Reaping

Linda Thorsen, Middleton, NS, RSVP Regional Prayer Advisor for the Maritimes

Reflecting on God’s word: Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. (Genesis 1:10-12 NIV) When you enter the land and plant any kind of fruit tree, regard its fruit as forbidden. For three years you are to consider it forbidden; it must not be eaten. In the fourth year all its fruit will be holy, an offering of praise to the LORD. (Leviticus 19:22-24 NIV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV) Living in the beautiful Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia, I see farms everywhere. Apple orchards are a favourite sight; the pink and white blossoms are heavenly; the fruit is also a real delight. But rarely do I give thought to the time, effort, and expertise necessary to produce the very best fruit. The trees require lots of ‘TLC’ – plenty of sunlight and good drainage; sturdy support while it grows to maturity; pruning to get rid of damaged, broken, or crowded branches; diligent attention to leaves for signs of disease; and mulching before winter to protect and enrich the root system. Not only the apple tree, but everything of value comes at a cost and requires diligence and commitment. God created every living thing – including the wonderful apple. He spoke it into existence. (Genesis 1:10-12) It seemed doomed to fail right from the start, but God had the Israelites plant fruit trees to first reach a place of maturity fit for an offering to Him before tasting the fruit themselves. (Leviticus 19:22-24) So, just as fruit grows, God’s plan was to create us humans to grow. He wants to be given free rein to put each of us in a place, with the perfect conditions, where we will receive support for our beginning journey with Him. Many of you have been just that for others. He knows we have ‘bad spots’ that need removing to keep us spiritually healthy; and this part hurts and doesn’t always ‘take’ the first time. Finally, we need to be embedded in a spot where we receive nourishment constantly to keep us on track. At last, we will bear fruit – in the lives of others who are just seedlings. (Galatians 5:22-23) Then we attain the ‘fruit of the Spirit’ – a gift of abundance which could only have come about through the long hard process of refinement. Worship Meditation: 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. (2 Corinthians 5:17-18 NLT) Prayers of Worship: Creator God, you are so wise and thoughtful. We praise you for your creation that adds such beauty and goodness to our lives. Thank you that, in your eyes, we are ‘very good’ parts of your creation. We praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ! Thank you for replacing the old me with a new one and providing the gifts of the Spirit that make me beautiful to others. We desire to be your reconcilers, drawing others to the One who created them and loves them. Thank you that this is your desire for us too. Thank you for being our co-worker in showing others how to belong to Christ and become a new person.

Prayers of Request for June Prepared by Linda Thorsen, Seleda Frey and Karen Erickson

He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. (Ephesians 1:7 NLT) So many fathers need your kindness and grace and the freedom of knowing that you forgive their sins! Holy Son, please be at work in the hearts and lives of Canada’s men. Prayers for our world:

† You have set us in families, Heavenly Father. Thank you for providing for us in this way and for setting fathers as family leaders with big responsibilities. Give the fathers in our country the desire to have you as their leader in carrying out all they must do.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As we celebrate Father’s Day this year, our Father, thank you that you are the picture of what a perfect

father should be. Give us ways to encourage the fathers we know – to encourage and support them with your love.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Fathers of blended families have great challenges to know how to love all unconditionally. Help them to

have your love as a source for loving each child and for encouraging them as children of promise and potential.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Dear Lord, we pray for single parents who are struggling financially, emotionally, and spiritually. Cause them

to seek you out and find you through encounters with those who know you as their Father. May we come alongside them and be of support to them. Guide them in their parenting each day.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Dear Father, we pray for those children whose fathers are absent. Move in their young minds and hearts to

reveal yourself to them as a Father who forgives readily and loves unconditionally. May each one sense your divine presence and choose you to be their faithful, never-faltering Father.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for the men and women who serve you as ministers and pastors in our churches. They are often

torn between caring for the flock you have given them and the families they love. Give them your discerning wisdom each day.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for the churches of Canada and for Christian organizations. We ask especially that you will guide

them as they seek to reach men for Jesus. Give them the insight and understanding that is needed to touch these lives.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Men’s interests are drawn to many good areas of life, but also there are great temptations around them.

Father, please give courage and strength to them as they are faced with desires that seem beyond their control.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Saviour, we pray for the souls of the men of Canada! We ask that these people, who are so often the

leaders of our communities and businesses, will turn their hearts to the God who can make them truly strong.

June Planning Team Devotional Erased

Tracy Lee Parker, Bridgetown, NS

God’s Word for Today: Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.” (Isaiah 1: 18 NLT) I have a hard time imagining the lives of many of my students. It seems theirs is a generation that is so belittled that they feel they have no value or worth, and, as a consequence, they have little or no respect for themselves. So many seem to feel that they do not deserve better, almost to the extent that they punish themselves by making conscious choices for, rather than against, abuse and addictions. How do you help someone who is so low? There are no quick fixes, no instant cures to overcome de-valuation and degradation. There is no effective ten-step plan or twenty-week program that fixes all life’s woes. As I contemplate these things, I wish I had a great eraser – a miracle eraser – that would purify and wipe away all residual effects of a life gone wrong. An eraser that could wash clean with absolutely no trace of toxicity remaining. It is my prayer, when I walk down the street or into my classroom or into a crowded shop, that I truly see people. That I do not simply see the outward shell or surface, but that I would see who each one is ... and that I would appreciate their worth. That I would not see them through tainted, tinted eyes that warp, twist and judge, but instead through eyes of compassion and love. For so easily, that could have been me. And for those who enter my classroom, I want to be a light. I want to shine hope and possibility into their lives. I want to challenge them to challenge themselves. I want them to see their worth, to see that they are loved and, yes, lovable. Jesus was found among the broken. He always loved those whom others thought were unworthy of love. He offered compassion and grace to all, but again and again we see his heart for the vulnerable. I want that to be my heart. I do not have a magic eraser. Nor does one exist. However, there is One who can cover the stains and brokenness, truly making them as though they were never there. Jesus paid the cost for the sin that caused such deep defilement with his blood, his very life. He is the only hope for a dying and battered world gone crazy. He is the only One who can transform you and make you completely new. (Isaiah 1:18) Prayer Plan: Ask your group to commit to praying for the broken in your communities. Ask God for his eyes to see others around you. Be open to inviting some to your group’s events.

July Prayer Connection Devotional Hungering and Thirsting

Linda Thorsen, Middleton, NS Reflecting on God’s Word: Rise during the night and cry out. Pour out your hearts like water to the Lord. Lift up your hands to him in prayer, pleading for your children, for in every street they are faint with hunger. (Lamentations 2:19 NLT) Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (Matthew 5:6 NIV) As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? (Psalm 42:1-2 NIV) I remember, some years ago, being in Los Angeles on the corner of Rodeo Drive and another street – probably the most expensive shopping area in the U.S. at the time. You know you’re in the wrong place when there are no prices on the merchandise! The shops were amazing, and I gaped open-mouthed at a few early morning shoppers in their mink coats on an October morning carrying bags to their limos! As I made a 180 degree turn, I saw, at the end of Rodeo, a large, beautiful cathedral! But oddly, on the many steps to the huge doors, were heaps of rags or clothing. “How odd,” I thought – until a few of the bundles began to move around and rise up. These were people, all bundled up, sleeping on cement steps at the end of one of the richest streets in the world! I was both shocked and sickened at this visible paradox. (Lamentations 2:19) Thinking back to this poignant moment, I realize that, in that land of plenty, there was barely a city block between the truly ‘poor and hungry’ and the ‘rich and full’. Yet, I saw that each of these groups of people was as needy as the other – they just didn’t realize it. The poor were seeking places to find rest and peace, and the wealthy were seeking ‘stuff’ to fill already-full spaces. Little did they know that there may have been someone in that cathedral who could have led them to One who could and would give each one exactly what they were truly looking for. These diversely divided people had so much in common. Their hunger and thirst could have been satiated immediately by Jesus who died to fill them with his love. I consider what so many of us Christians hunger and thirst after – a good retirement plan, a wine cellar, a luxurious vacation at a five-star resort, a new iPhone or iPad, a hot tub for the backyard. There’s nothing wrong with these as long as these longings aren’t what feed our souls. Whatever we feed our souls is what we will need in order to be satiated. We enter this world hungry and thirsty. Let us look at those around us who have not yet found Jesus, the Bread of Life. (Matthew 5: 6) God is so eager to be our supply, to meet and surpass our needs, to fill us with himself so we will never be empty. Let us choose to put away our desires to be filled by earthly things that will bring only momentary satisfaction, and instead, hunger and thirst after his heart and be forever filled. (Psalm 42:1-2)

Worship Meditation: Psalm 23:5-6 You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever. (Psalm 23:5-6 NLT) Prayers of Worship: Our Shepherd, the picture of a feast set before us prepared by you is so moving and undeserved. Thank you that your supply for all our needs goes beyond what we can imagine. Yes, our cups do overflow. The righteousness that you declare as ours comes from the death of our Saviour. Your righteousness, your goodness, and your love are ours forever. Even our appetite, our hungering, for righteousness comes from you. How humbled we are. King of all, regardless of our status in the world, you understand our needs and provide for us. Thank you that your filling us with your presence also disregards our wealth or lack of it.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour ... (Isaiah 43:2-3 NIV) O Lord, our God, even when it comes to summer, we are sometimes faced with passing through rivers that seem to sweep over us, or we must walk through the fire. Whether the rivers or the fires are real or symbolic, convince us that you are there with us because you are our God, the Holy One, our Saviour. Prayers for our world:

† Ruler of all, thank you for our country and its people. Thank you for our churches and their teaching of your Word. Thank you that we are ‘glorious and free’. O Lord, would you continue to protect our freedoms and guide those who oversee them?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Sovereign God, we lift up the political leaders of this world of ours. We ask that you would guide their

thinking, their actions, and their motivations so that what they carry out is for the good of the people and is governed by your will.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We pray for our prime minister, Justin Trudeau, and his young family. Draw them to a faith in you. Watch

over them and protect them as a family. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † We are saddened and surprised that in our great country there is human trafficking. Father, would you

intervene in these situations and bring real freedom – freedom of body and soul – to these who are captives?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you, Creator, for summer camps for our children; thank you for those who organize and supervise.

We ask that these times will be truly wholesome and encouraging for all the children. Watch over and keep them safe.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Water activities draw us in the summer. We ask that wise use of the beautiful waterways of Canada, and

community and home pools, will provide safety and fun for all. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Thank you for churches that provide Vacation Bible Camps for their communities. We pray that, in the midst

of the excitement and energy, your Spirit will be at work in these young lives. Help them to know that you love them.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † Gracious Lord, show us neighbourhoods and marketplaces to shower with prayer. As we have summer

walks, remind us to pray for the homes we pass. Give us an awareness of your love for these people. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- † As teachers, counselors and professors take their summer holidays, Wise Teacher, would you give them

rest and recreation that prepares them for their fall students and responsibilities? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

July Planning Team Devotional Anointed With Fresh Oil

Raya Duggan, Bedford, NS God’s Word for Today: Psalm 92:12-14 The righteous will flourish like the date palm (long-lived, upright and useful); They will grow like a cedar in Lebanon (majestic and stable). Planted in the house of the Lord, They will flourish in the courts of our God. (Growing in grace) they will still thrive and bear fruit and prosper in old age; They will flourish and be vital and fresh (rich in trust and love and contentment) (Psalm 92:12-14, AMP) Palm trees are known for their long life. To flourish like palm trees means to stand tall and live long. According to notes in the Life Application Bible, the cedars of Lebanon grew to 120 feet in height and up to 30 feet in circumference; thus, they were solid, strong and immovable. God’s Word describes us as upright, strong, and unmoved by the winds of circumstance. I confess that I do not always see myself that way, especially when circumstances loom so large in front of me and their winds turn into a hurricane of worry, fear and anxiety. I cannot seem to see around them. Those large, dark, and sometimes insurmountable, circumstances seem to dictate that I am stuck here feeling discouraged and defeated and … STUCK. Can you relate? Is it possible to see God make crooked paths straight and mountains into flat places? Isaiah 40:4 actually states exactly that: “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.” (Isaiah 40:4 NIV) Then, I look back at Psalm 92:10 that says: “But my horn (my emblem of strength and power) You have exalted like that of a wild ox; I am anointed with fresh oil (for Your service)”. Pulpit Commentary states that “oil was supposed to give vigour to the frame”. Flourishing in life – bearing fruit in old age, being vital and fresh – is not only possible, but promised in God’s Word! Ask God to anoint you with fresh oil for his service, to make you strong and unmoved by circumstances, and to flourish in your life – whether you are a young person or an older one. People will take notice and will want what you have! Prayer Plan: What are the circumstances of your group – flourishing or STUCK? Ask God today to anoint you with fresh oil for the service he desires for you. Ask him to make you strong, vital and fresh.

August Prayer Connection Devotional Don’t Be a Sitting Duck

Elizabeth Turnbull, Regina, SK

Reflecting on God’s Word: Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls. (James 1:19-21 NLT) If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” (James 1:5 NLT) Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God. But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here. (1 John 4:1-3 NLT) “Step right up young lady! Try our game of chance,” the carnival barker beckons. Carnival games have a poor reputation. Optical illusions or physical relationships make it hard for a player to judge the game’s difficulty. Some operators have games rigged to take advantage of unsuspecting players. Bowling pins can be difficult to knock down as one side of them will be weighted. Often there is a game where players have to shoot the yellow ducks as they roll across the backdrop. As Christians, we are not to become sitting ducks waiting to be shot at. Be wary when challenging opinions. Jesus said, when sending out his twelve disciples, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16 NIV) Leading up to the crucifixion of Christ, the Pharisees pestered the Messiah with questions. The answers had the potential to incriminate him. Jesus replied with a question. He did not argue. At his trial before the high priest, and then Pilate, Jesus responded to their accusations with few words. Instead of responding in the heat of the moment, use self-control and discretion. “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.” (James 1:19-21) Ask God for wisdom about dealing with situations that you feel are not right. (James 1:5) Pray, for prayer is the fertilizer from which wisdom grows. Go beyond the mere perception of what is happening. Seek spiritual direction and understanding. Pray for discernment in deciding whether the spirit is from God or is false. (1 John 4:1-3) Sometimes beneath the facade are hurt people. Pray for empathy. Seek God and his will. And don’t become a sitting duck.

Worship Meditation: Hebrews 13:6 So we can say with confidence, “The LORD is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6 NLT) Prayers of Worship: All Wise God, thank you that you give so generously and willingly of your wisdom to those of us who ask. We praise you that, with confidence, we can come to you in uncertain situations and can know that you are there to help. Uncertainty can bring fear and discouragement to our minds. Thank you that you, O Lord, are our helper and are always present in our times of need. We do not need to be afraid! Thank you, Jesus, for being our example for how to handle questionable situations. Your responses to Satan were so clear and powerful. Thank you for showing us how to use the scriptures effectively in our daily lives.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. August Planning Team Devotional Mountain

Tracy Lee Parker, Bridgetown, NS

God’s Word for Today: He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (Psalm 91:1 NKJV) Has there ever been a time when you feel like God is just not there? That you pray and pray and nothing seems to happen? That you just wish that there would be a bolt of lightening, a clap of thunder from on high, just something … a sign? I don’t know why we go through times like that, but I’ve been there. Does it even make a difference if I pray … or worship … or obey? I remember thinking this way. Then I look out my window to the north mountain overshadowing the beautiful Annapolis Valley. This mountain is small by the world’s standards. In comparison to the Rockies of western Canada, this mountain is merely a hill. But it is solid. It is dependable. It “soars” above our fields and pasture lands. It’s reflected in the blue, winding Annapolis River. It provides a buffer, a shield from the white caps and waves of the cold expanse of the Bay of Fundy. When atop it, it provides an amazing view of our valley floor, the lines of the highways, the clusters of buildings making up our small towns, the vastness of farmers’ fields … and I know. I know that God is there. God is solid. He is dependable. He soars above our lives and above our daily struggles. He is reflected in the beauty of a generous heart, a kind smile, and a helping hand. He provides a buffer, a safe place, a place of refuge from the storms and unpredictability of life. God has an amazing view unlike our own. A view that sees the beginning from the end. A view that sees the final product before it even exists. A view that sees … us … and his plan, his purposes for us … and he understands. Sometimes when I look out my window to the north, I don’t see my mountain. It’s like that big island of rock and tree has vanished … like it’s been erased. All I see is cloud and fog. But…I know it’s there. It’s constant and unchanging. Just like God. “For I am the Lord, I do not change …” (Malachi 3:6a NKJV) Prayer Plan: Commit your time to the God who is always there. Pray to plan with expectations that he is solid, dependable, soaring above your uncertainties and able to see all that is happening now and in the future. He understands.
