Call for Nominations for the Brian Blatchford Prize The Brian Blatchford Prize will be awarded at the ISPO World Congress in Lyon, France. Established by the Blatchford Family to honour the memory of Brian Blatchford, the prize is awarded to an individual that has an outstanding record of innovative achievement in the field of prosthetics and/or orthotics. The achievement should be related to prosthetic and/or orthotic hardware, or scientifically based new techniques which result in better prostheses or orthosis. If you feel like you could apply for a nomination or would like to suggest a colleague, please complete the nomination template with the candidate details, a justification as well as a CV, to ISPO at [email protected] by 15 October 2014. (Nominations or applications from Member Societies or individuals will be considered).

Learn about IPOS (Improve Prosthetic and Orthotic Sciences) In an effort to boost the role of scientific studies in P&O and their outcomes in improving patient care, ISPO has recently set up the IPOS (Improving Prosthetic & Orthotic Sciences) programme which aims to support (new) researchers in enhancing their knowledge of basic procedures and requirements for publication in conference proceedings or research/clinical journals related to prosthetics and orthotics. In the short term, IPOS will especially be helpful to improve the scientific contributions at the ISPO World Congress. In the longer term, it should contribute to raising the level of scientific practices related to P&O services in general. Mentorship Arrangement The IPOS program relies on a mentorship agreement whereby an experienced and trusted adviser (the Research Mentor) will coach a Research Mentee from research manuscript preparation to submission. Research Mentors can also advise Research Mentees on how to reply the journal editors about the comments given by the manuscript reviewers. All information on requirements to be a mentor/mentee, assessment procedures and application guidelines are available here.

ISPO Discusses GATE With WHO & Partners On July 3 & 4, the World Health Organization (WHO) convened a meeting to discuss the future of the Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology (GATE) initiative. This meeting included key NGOs, members of the ISPO Council of Industry Partners, Academics and the ISPO President and President Elect. The meeting endorsed WHO's aspiration to lead a Global Campaign to increase knowledge and awareness, accessibility and affordability of Assistive Technology. The meeting was a follow-up to the side-event held at the UN last September 2013, where ISPO took part in New York (USA), in partnership with Exceed and the Nippon Foundation.

The final list will be selected by an objective method of scoring by the Protocol Committee and then ratified by the Executive Board. By October 2014, the final ballot list will be sent to the International Committee members for the vote. The deadline to return the ballot papers will be in January 2015. Please do not hesitate to contact the ISPO Head Office in case of any questions.

New Member Society in the Philippines ISPO International now counts an ISPO Member Society in the Philippines, recently set up thanks to the dynamism and willingness of local and international actors. The Philippines Member Society plans to support the establishment of the P&O profession in the country, encourage integration of the discipline into professional communities, develop national standards for practice, and work towards legal recognition of the profession at national level. ISPO Philippines is committed to ensure that Prosthetists and Orthotists meet similar standards as other health-care professionals in the Philippines. ISPO Philippines intends to do this by setting national practice guidelines and by establishing a post-graduate competency examination. Future plans also include educational events to encourage interdisciplinary collaborations and continuous professional development. Congratulations to the newly formed ISPO Member Society! For more information about ISPO Philippines or to get involved, please contact the Member Society directly.

ISPO South Africa Relays Appeal For Assistance “Damkok is a victim of taxi violence which took place in 1997 in Mthatha. He was admitted to Bedford Orthopaedic Hospital, where a motorised wheelchair was recommended and supplied by the hospital. His mobility improved, until the battery of his chair could not be replaced in 2010 by the Orthopaedic workshop in Bedford, and an ordinary wheelchair was supplied to him, which is of little use since his upper limbs are weak. As a result Damkok has been in bed since 2010 and he only goes out of his room on grant days, when there is somebody to push him to the pay station. I visited him as the chairperson of APD in the area and I found a pathetic situation and would like him to be assisted with a new motorised wheelchair. Any assistance will be most welcome”. This desperate plea was emailed to South African Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (SAOPA) and ISPO South Africa from Mr Zett Gqweta, who works at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dept. of Chemical Pathology, at the Walter Sisulu University, Mthatha. If you can assist, please email the ISPO South Africa office. They have some photographs of Damkok, which were supplied by Zett, which will be emailed to any person who is keen to assist. ISPO SA is keen to start a fund to assist people who are found to be living in dire circumstances, such as the story of Damkok above. ISPO SA will ensure that funds are ring-fenced and the ISPO SA committee will approve any help and the funding thereof.

ISPO Holds Successful Global Educators Meeting! The ISPO Global Educators Meeting (GEM) took place between 25-27 June 2014, in Kobe (Japan). Organized by ISPO International & ISPO Japan, in partnership with and supported by over 15 other companies and organizations from all over the world, the ISPO GEM gathered P&O educators from 43 countries to discuss on educational methods and techniques, network and strengthen cooperative ties amongst them. The event counted on the presence of keynote speakers and especially Chapal Khasnabis (Technical Officer, World Health Organization), who stressed the importance of having updated, evidence-based standards and guidelines in P&O education, as well as Professor Debra Da Rosa (Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, USA), who spoke about both learning and teaching techniques, providing participants with practical tools that can be applied in nowadays’ P&O classrooms. The three days offered participants and speakers with several opportunities to discuss in-depth about matters of interest and relevance related to P&O education in dedicated breakout sessions on topics such as curriculum approaches, the P&O standards & guidelines, and instructional methods. The organizers hope that discussions and the strengthening of the global P&O educators community is carried on, reason for which a second GEM is being considered! ISPO International would like to take this opportunity to thank the GEM sponsors, its media partner Human Study e.V., as well as ISPO Japan, Kobe College of Medical Welfare and the Jikei Group of Schools, for their support and work in making the event happen and successful.
