Islamophobia Conference and Exhibit, 4/8-30/2019

Celebrating 10 Years of the International Islamophobia Conference at UC Berkeley

A library exhibit and book display

When: April 8-30th, 2019

Where: Ethnic Studies Library (30 Stephens Hall)

The 1st International Islamophobia Conference commenced at UC Berkeley in Spring 2019

response to the intensification of Islamophobia and bigotry documented in the 2008 U.S.

presidential elections.

During the elections and his presidency, the heritage of candidate Barack Hussein Obama II was

a focal point of attack from right-wing movements. The Birther Movement and Tea Party

emerged onto the national stage utilizing Islamophobic discourse to undermine the legitimacy of

his presidency. In reality, attacking Obama’s Muslim-ness or the use of the “M” word was a

substitute and a signpost for the “N” word, which was not publicly acceptable. Thus,

Islamophobia was coded to express anti-Black and anti-immigrant racism and at the same time

framed as patriotic undertaking to defend the country from supposed Muslim infiltration and

terrorism. Since Obama’s presidency, Anti-Muslim sentiment has been packaged and monetized

into votes at the ballot box in the 2010 midterm elections and all subsequent elections.

The Center for Race and Gender’s Islamophobia Research and Documentation Project (IRDP)

initiated the International Islamophobia Conference to examine the racialization of Muslims in

the US while situation it within a global comparative paradigm. Since 2009, the conference has

become the hub for scholarly engagement on Islamophobia Studies with IRDP serving as the

academic flagship for all research and research network related to the field. The 10th Annual

International Conference is an occasion to celebrate the emergence of the academic field, to take

stock of what research was undertaken and to explore ways to address existing gaps and build

upon the body of scholarship in the field.

Diversity and Social Justice: A Free Presentation, 4/23/2019

8th Annual David H. Caskey Memorial Lecture: Diversity and Social Justice

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Mona Sue Weissmark

Dr. Weissmark brings both new understanding and new questions to the concept of diversity and

social justice that resonates with current events throughout the world. The detailing of the

concept of justice and injustice as both personal and intergenerational has implications for both

individuals and society as we witness polarization in the U.S. today.
