Introduction

High-Frequency WordsA word list is included for an overview of the words astudent should easily recognize at each grade level andthat are used in the reading selections throughout theworkbook. For extra practice, prepare flashcards of thewords on the list for students to practice recognizingand reading quickly. This will help students develop asolid bank of sight words on which they can rely andthat are automatic.

Fluency PracticeReading fluency is the ability to read with expression,intonation, and a natural flow that sounds like talking.Fluency is essential for comprehension because the lack of it results in choppy, robotic reading that stands in the way of making sense out of a phrase or sentence.

WritingReading and writing are partner skills. Students aregiven opportunities to transfer their newly learned reading skills to authentic writing opportunities.

Extensions and Real-Life ApplicationsEach unit ends with a “More Things to Do” page thatincludes suggestions for hands-on experiences thatextend the theme. A list of books is also included forfurther study and enjoyment of the unit’s theme.
