Diabetes Self Management Program:

Have you recently been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes? Are you unsure of what diabetes is? The Interlake-Eastern Community Wellness Team is here to help you. This program consists of two or three classes; explaining what diabetes is, how to control blood sugars, what to eat with diabetes and how to read food labels, treatments for diabetes, how to stay healthy from your eyes to your toes, how to manage cholesterol and blood pressure and how to make healthy lifestyle choices.

MW includes: a health check (blood pressure, blood glucose, and a lifestyle quiz); healthy displays on physical activity, nutrition, smoking and stress, healthy lifestyles presentation and a passport to record results.

Get Better Together:

Are you living with a chronic condition such as arthritis, MS, depression, asthma, chronic pain, diabetes, anxiety, cancer, fibromyalgia or heart disease? Come join Get Better Together! People with different chronic health problems attend together to deal with common issues they face and to motivate each other with solutions and techniques for:

• Dealing with frustration, pain, fatigue and isolation • Appropriate use of medications • Communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals • Appropriate exercises for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance • Maintaining appropriate nutrition • Engaging with other community resources

This FREE six week workshop is designed to help people with ongoing health conditions take control of their health. This program, led by others living with chronic conditions, can help you develop a plan to deal with the challenges of an ongoing health concern or disability. Bring a friend, family member, or other support person to attend with you!

Get Better Together ONLINE:

Is a Get Better Together Online workshop right for me?

If you have access to an internet connection, you can take part in the funded workshopson your time, free of charge. Six Online workshops are easy to follow. If you have two hours a week, you can make a step-by-step action plan for improving your health and your life.

The secure online message board lets you get support from others with health issues who understand the challenges. You can take part safely without sharing private information with the group. All communication takes place by email and on a secure website with message boards moderated by workshop leaders. Workshops are for adults living in Manitoba and take place entirely online.

Get Better Together LEADER TRAINING:

The Get Better Together Leader Training is free and runs for 4 days. It gives you a chance to know what the group program is like, as well as develop skills to lead the group program. You will get a Leaders’ Training Manual and the resource book “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.”

This training prepares people to lead the Get Better Together classes with a partner. This partner may be from the RHA or another volunteer. Over the 4 days, you will build skills and gain confidence to lead the program. After the training if you don’t feel that leading the program is a good fit for you, you are not required to lead. The Regional Health Authority may ask you to lead a program, if and when space is available. We value volunteers and their time and energy. All volunteers are required to go through a screening process.

S.A.D. Seasonal Affective Disorder? Trouble Sleeping?:

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Like many people, you may experience cabin fever during the winter months. Or, you may tend to eat more or sleep more when the temperature drops. But seasonal affective disorder (SAD) goes well beyond those symptoms. Seasonal affective disorder is much more than the winter blahs. It's a type of depressive disorder. If you have seasonal affective disorder, winter's short days and long nights may induce feelings of depression, lethargy, fatigue, cravings for sweets and starches, headaches, sleep problems and irritability. Learn more! Trouble Sleeping; Not everyone who has trouble sleeping has S.A.D. But they can occur together. Learn more about sleep and S.A.D., and other Chronic Diseases.
