Table Tennis News: Irish U21 Table Tennis Champions!
Mair and James Kelly joined forces with the Munster U21 Team at the
Senior Interprovincial Championships held in Lisburn, NorthernIreland.
This is only the 4th time in the long history of the event that Munster have
won a title and it was won on the narrowest of margins, as James Kelly joined forces with Alan Walsh of Ballincollig to win the tie breaker doubles
in the final 5th set, in fact all James’s matches were 5 set victories.
Munster went on to beat Leinster 6/4. There was added satisfaction as the U21 Team prevented Ulster from taking a clean sweep of titles on their
own home ground.
The team were guided by Non Playing Captain, Owen Kelly. Our own Goleen Club coach was extremely proud of the efforts of the whole team
and especially proud of the performances of his own two children.
More good news for our Goleen players as Mair and James received
selections for Ireland with James joining the U18 team travelling to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, and Mair who will join the Irish
U23 Squad at the London Grand Prix. Kate Jepson

Goleen GAA Club:
Saturday last, 22nd, had us travelling to Cloughdubh to face
Araglen in the 2nd round of the Cork County JB Football
Championship. Try as we may up to this, the season had so far
proven difficult for us to find our rhythm and get back to winning
ways. With a 6pm throw in we gathered and for those who
travelled was there a treat in store. From the start Araglen threw
down the gauntlet when they pointed after 56 seconds, but the
Black & Amber of the Mizen responded when a minute later
Darren O' Donovan went on a great run and split the uprights to equalise. The resulting
kick out ended up with Padraig Reidy who duly latched on another point, and on the 4th
minute Brendan Goggin pointed from an acute angle to give us a two point lead which
was not going to be relinquished for the rest of the encounter. Araglen pointed in the 6th
minute but Goleen responded in the 9th when after a great run Liam O'Connell split the
posts to record a wonderful point. Brendan Goggin won possession in the 11th minute
and dispatched a sublime pass to Jason Whitley who with clinical precision billowed the
Araglen net. For the next ten minutes it was tit for tat with our band of warriors gelling
together and when in the 15th minute Ronan Kennedy pulled off a wonderful save it fired
the determination of all which resulted with Darren O'Donovan recording an inspirational
point in the 20th minute. Araglen pulled one back in the 22nd but when Darren
O'Donovan chased what most would have considered a lost cause and won a 45 which
he duly converted in 26th minute our spirits were raised and we reached the short
whistle leading 1-06 to 0-03.
On a perfect evening for football the resumption saw Araglen come out with all guns
firing and they pointed in the 31st minute. Within a minute Darren O' Donovan
responded when he pointed. Araglen responded pointing within the minute. A
tremendous struggle for dominance by both teams ensured but in the 41st minute Liam
O'Connell pointed to reassure the west. 6 minutes later Shane O'Leary won a great ball
in the halfback line and surged forward to find Jason Whitley who propelled the ball
between the sticks to record another point in the 47th minute. Araglen responded with
points in the 52nd & 54th minutes, and in the 55th minute Jason Whitley recorded
another point from a free. For the next five minutes Araglen threw everything but the
kitchen sink at us, but the resolve to succeed was evident by the Trojan display of
teamwork by our warriors. Araglen’s perseverance paid off when they eventually
breached our rear guard and goaled in the 62nd minute, but it was too little too late and
at the final whistle we advanced to the next round on a score line of 1-10 to 1-07.
