    Social Science - Youth Work.

    The Bachelor of Social Science Youth Work is a three-year applieddegree designed to enable knowledgeable, skillful, ethical andreective practice. Our graduates are highly regarded across boththe faith-based and broader youth sectors and readily nd work ina wide variety of roles and settings, including:

    Schools-based youth work (includingbutnotrestrictedtochaplaincy)

    Alternative education programs

    Supported accommodation programs

    Case work and mentoring

    Church-based youth work roles

    Camping and outdoor adventure recreation services

    Juvenile Justice Youth Work

    Youth-focused, community development programs

    The course draws on a variety of disciplines and perspectives,including sociology, youth and community developmenttheory, developmental psychology, human services frameworks,counselling skills and practical theology. These multipleperspectives are integrated around a very clear focus ondeveloping skills and experience in services to young people.

    The Bachelor of Social Science Youth Work prepares thinkingpractitioners who:

    Help young people make sense of their lives, issues, challengesand goals through skilled, interpersonal helping conversations

    Build community among young people through group workand program implementation

    Help young people establish and develop meaningfulrelationships with adults in their social worlds(family, school, neighbourhood, church)

    Help young people explore and express issues of meaning,

    Course Overview.

    During the rst year of their degree, students will develop anunderstanding of the principles and practices of relational

    youth work, working within legal and ethical frameworks, thedynamics of helping conversations, gain an in-depth knowledgeof the youth sector, various practices of referral, working withIndigenous and diverse youth ethnicities and the initial steps

    towards developing a sustainable career. In addition, students willstudy introductory subjects in communication skills, sociology,developmental psychology, and Christian studies.

    During the second year of their program, students will studyyouth sociology, community development, youth policy, casemanagement processes and complete a supervised eldplacement of 120 hours. Students will also complete subjects inethics and non-clinical mental health work as well as a furthersubject in Christian studies.

    During the third year of their program, students will completetheir major supervised placement of 300 hours and study genderand social identity, youth spirituality and complete further social

    sciences subjects and/or other electives.

    The bachelors degreeprogram delivered by TaborAdelaide is comprehensive

    Bachelor of Social Science(Youth Work).

    Prerequisites.

    Usually, year 12 completion with a TER of at least 65 or aCerticate IV qualication or equivalent are required. Studentswithout either of the above may still apply and are consideredfor acceptance on a case-by-case basis if they can demonstratealternative evidence of study readiness such as extensive eldexperience and demonstrated writing skills.

    Course Content.

    Social theories of youth, youth work ethics and values, adolescenthealth and well-being, youth spirituality and formation, groupwork and leadership skills, counselling skills, mentoring and casemanagement frameworks, community development frameworks,practical orientation to working in different youth work roles suchas church-based, schools-based, juvenile justice, supported youthaccommodation, community development, alternative education,supervised eld education, intercultural youth work, careerdevelopment in youth work, negotiating the youth sector, fundingapplications, biblical studies, theological reection and generalsocial and human development.

    Graduate Pathways.

    Graduate pathway options include Graduate Counselling atTabor and Graduate Social Work at Flinders University. Both theseprograms have competitive entry against designated criteria.Based on past graduate student experience, acceptance is likelybut cannot be guaranteed. Other graduate pathways at Taborare Ministry and Humanities.

    Eployent Outcoes.

    The Bachelor of Social Science degree is designed to preparegraduates for a variety of roles across the diverse youth sector.

    Based on actual graduate employment outcomes, potentialpositions include: Case Manager, Residential Care (securingaccommodation for young homeless people); Youth Worker(providing students with case management and personalsupport); Christian Pastoral Support Worker (providing pastoralcare to youth in an education setting, within schools, juvenilecentres, churches or other youth organisations); Outreach Worker(working with homeless youth and supporting them towardsindependence); Psychosocial Rehabilitation Support ServiceOfcer (working with young people with mental health issues,assisting them to nd appropriate support and mentoring themtowards independence); Group Facilitator Worker (assisting youngpeople develop condence, leadership, group work skills and self-esteem); Disability Support Carer; Youth Event Coordinator; Youth

    Development Ofcer with local council, Youth and Family Supportworker, Families SA and Youth Pastor.

    Step 1.

    Step 2.

    Instead of the 250-word personal statement requested on theapplication form, please complete the following exercise: Write a1,000-word letter that clearly addresses the following questions:

    1. What factors have led you to pursue education and training aspreparation for a vocation in youth work?

    2. What factors have led you to choose Tabor Adelaide as yourpreferred training institution?

    3. What kinds of possible future youth work roles are mostattractive to you at this stage?

    4. On a scale of one to ten, how condent do you feel aboutyour readiness for tertiary study? Describe the factors that haveinuenced your self-rating.

    5. What kind of support and preparation do you think would bemost helpful to you in raising your level of condence for study?

    Step 3.

    Attach your letter to your application or bring it to Tabor Adelaide,together with any evidence that demonstrates academicachievement (TER, SACE or other academic transcripts) and a briefCV outlining your previous and current experience in youth work/ministry in voluntary or paid roles.

    Step 4.
