Workshop 1: How to Help Students Use Reading Processes: 2-2.5 hours

Better readers become better learners. This workshop explores teaching

procedures and activities that support students in making sense of what

they read as they work through reading processes such as activating back-

ground knowledge, clarifying vocabulary or monitoring understanding.

Easy to use activities assist students before, during and after reading.

Workshop 2: How to Make Reading Strategies Visible: 2-2.5 hours

Research highlights that struggling readers benefit greatly from explicit

teaching of reading strategies to help them understand texts– and this

workshop provides teachers with a range of activities to make reading

strategies visible for students. Successful readers intuitively draw upon a

range of strategies when confronted by challenging texts. These include

strategies such as adjusting reading rate, re-reading, connecting and self-

questioning.

Workshop 3: How to Build Text Form Knowledge: 2-2.5hours

Students’ knowledge and use of purpose, organization language features

and text structure helps them to comprehend text. In this workshop par-

ticipants examine practical activities that will help students understand

these different patterns within texts and thus assist comprehension. This

builds an excellent foundation for creating texts of their own.
