HISTORY
Around 1800 California was ruled by Mexico and was famous for
its beauty and natural resources.
As people enthused about California other people from different
parts of America and the rest of the world wanted to live there.
However, the only people that were given grants to live there
were the Mexicans.
On June the 10th there was a revolt between the new American
settlers and the Mexican army named the Bear Revolt and was
the beginning of the rebellion against the Mexicans. The US
army got involved, so began the Mexican American war.
The war ended on February the 2nd
1848.Gold was discovered in 1848 also, and so began the famous Gold
Rush

GOLD RUSH
Once people heard about the gold, the population increased from
100,000 to almost 400,000 during the California gold rush, because
people wanted to become rich.
People travelled up to San Francisco, up the Sacramento River to the
Gold Fields.
The Gold Rush had a hugely damaging effect on the Native
Americans, who were driven from their native homes.

CALIFORNIA & EARTH QUAKES
San Francisco and Los Angeles have both been built on
the San Andres fault line. This means that they are at risk of earth quakes. On average
there are 10,000 earth quakes a year along the fault line.
A fault line is where two of the earth plates meet and bump
off each other, causing the earth to quake
In 1906 San Francisco had a devastating earthquake when
3000 people died and 25000 people were left homeless.
