Taeyang is an artist that I listen to regularly, and doing this assignment I knew I could take things from a few of his music videos I have seen previously. The first idea comes from his music video ‘Wedding dress’. In this music video Taeyang plays a grand piano as part of the narrative as well as the performance. I think it looks really classy and works well as it can be part of the narrative in the story and just as a performance as the song uses a piano. The song that we have chosen also has a piano, and I think it would be good to use this. The different shots such as the over the shoulder shot and the medium long shot are really effective as they highlight the significance of the grand piano. The upward tilt is also effective as it goes from Taeyang’s hands actually playing the instrument to his face, showing his emotion in relation to the narrative.

There are also many other shots in this music video that I like as they are quite artistic and have nice cinematography. The mise en scene makes the music video as the locations are outstanding and the high key lighting in the wedding scenes or the scenes of his memory connote that it is a happy occasion, in contrast to when Taeyang is singing alone where there is low key lighting. The different shots also add to the impact as they show more of the beautiful scenery in the wedding and the different location. Below are some of the scenes of which I found the cinematography to be good.

The narrative in this music video is that Taeyang is in love with a woman who is marrying his friend. At the beginning of the music video it is made so the audience believe it is Taeyang’s wedding day as it shows him getting ready and having flashbacks to when he and a woman are hanging out, he also welcomes people as he walks past to get to the church, however when inside there is a scene when the bride is walking towards him and then the groom enters the scene, this shows the audience that is not actually Taeyang’s wedding but this other mans, then all becomes clear when the flashbacks come back and all the moments the audience saw earlier are shown again but this time with the groom entering and joining in with them. Throughout the music video it unravels that the three of them used to always hang out together and it was just that the other man proposed first, then on the wedding day we see Taeyang kissing the bride, however this seems t be just in his imagination as in the next scenes she is happily with her groom and wedding guests. Throughout the narrative on the wedding day, viewers can see the emotion on Taeyang’s face showing he is obviously unhappy about the whole situation. There are a few flashbacks throughout the music video which make the storyline a bit clearer to the audience as it shows how much time they spend together and the fact that he was in love and thought she was too, however nearing to the end of the music video it shows how he wasn’t the only person in love with her and that his best friend gave her an engagement ring just as Taeyang was looking for his ring in his pocket to give to her. I really like the storyline as it grips the audience and has twists that they wouldn’t expect, the emotion also captures their hearts as they are rooting for Taeyang who is obviously unhappy, which as fans, they would share the unhappiness.

The performance side of the music video includes Taeyang not only singing but playing the piano and dancing too. This shows his all round talent and is why he has so many fans. The scenes of him performing are in low key lighting to show difference from the narrative and showing he is in a dark place internally as he has lost the love of hislife and is telling his story. However when he his playing the piano it isalso part of the narrative as he plays the piano at the wedding. I think itis a good idea to have the artist not only sing but dance too as it showsff all their talent, making them have the complete package. I like how although Taeyang is the artist, there are back up dancers too and it just makes the whole performance more effective. The different locations and costumes are interesting and something I need to consider for my own music video too as the dancers all wear similar clothing yet the artist always stands out in comparison. There is a range of camera angles when on the performance, from extreme long shots when displaying the dancers to close ups of Taeyang’s face while he sings. There are a few pans and tilts which add to the impact of the dance moves too.

Another music video of Taeyang’s that I like is ‘Only look at me’ as I like the location, a café. It is a cute small café and sets the scene for the song. I think the location is really important for the music video as it must go with the song. I also like this music video because it shows off Taeyang’s dance skills once again, I think this is something I should also consider in my music video as many artists dance in their music videos. There are a lot of fades in this music video when going from scene to scene, I think this is the best way to go from scene to scene as it is smooth and flows well with the music.
