Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Executive Artistic Director

So glad you’re here for A Taffeta Christmas. Thank you! This show is just pure ljoy. To quote the youngest Taffeta, Donna: “I hope you like it!”

There’s a soft spot in my heart for The Taffetas. There are actually three different Taffeta productions written and arranged by Rick Lewis, and we’ve produced all three before (The Taffetas, Feb. 2005; A Taffeta Christmas, Dec. 2005; A Taffeta Wedding, Oct. 2010). In this, my final season as artistic director, I am delighted to share with you once again A Taffeta Christmas.

The Taffetas follow the mold shaped by actual four-sister singing groups like The Lennon Sisters and non-sibling 1950s/60s girl groups who sang tight four-part harmony: The Marvelettes, The Crystals, and The Chiffons, to name a few. If you don’t know these groups, check them out. You’ll be glad you did. It is in their tradition that The Taffetas exist.

Other performers iconic to the 1950s era mentioned in our show include Frankie & Annette, Snooky Lanson, Tab Hunter, Rock Hudson, Debbie, Liz, Mario Lanza and… a personal favorite, Topo Gigio. These cultural references were household names 60 years ago, so much so that everyone knew who “Debbie” and “Liz” were without using their last names! These folks are all worth Googling.

Putting a show together is a collaborative effort. For this production in my last season and likely my last directorial effort, I invited several people to join me on this final journey. Special thanks for saying “yes,” then, to Keith Pennings, who was in Tabard’s very first production, summer 2001; Tim Reynolds, who has been in more Tabard shows than any performer (this one is #15) — his first Tabard show was our third, finishing the first season, spring 2002; Carol Hawley, with whom I’ve worked shoulder-to-shoulder on many Tabard shows; and Dottie Lester-White, whom I’ve known for nearly 50 years and have had the joy of working with on a bundle of shows, including A Taffeta Wedding. Thank you, all, for making Tabard — and Taffeta — memories with me.

As you may know, we have themed this season “New Beginnings.” Not only is that theme present in all of our productions, it is very much a theme in Tabard’s day-to-day life. On November 1st, Michael Ramirez joined Tabard as our finance director. He takes over for John DiLoreto, who had overseen our finances since January 2008. I am deeply grateful to John for all he did with and for Tabard. He was significantly instrumental in getting Tabard into this venue and contributed greatly to our growth and success. We wish him well in his own post-Tabard new beginning.

Our designated non-profit for this holiday production is St. Paul’s Food Closet, for the work they do providing food and clothing to those in our community in need. We welcome your donations of nonperishable food and warm clothing during this holiday season. The donation barrels will be in the lobby through January 1st.

Written and Arranged by RICK LEWIS

Melissa Gialdini (Cheryl) is thrilled to be performing with Tabard for the first time. Her family has always loved Christmas and being a Taffeta sister is the perfect way to get in the spirit this year. She grew up doing musical theater but took a break when she started high school. Her return to the stage was last fall, as Sandy in Grease (Sunnyvale Community Players), followed by Mamma Mia (San Jose Music Theater) and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (Foothill Music Theatre). She couldn’t do this without the support of her husband, Nick, and can’t thank him and her parents enough.

Brennah Kemmerly (Peggy) is thrilled for her first Tabard role. Favorites include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Player) and Big River (Susan) at South Bay Musical Theatre; the world premiere of Mecham’s Pride and Prejudice (Miss Bingley) for Redwood Symphony; Pirates of Penzance (Major-General Stanley) at BayOp; and The 1940s Radio Hour (Ginger) for San Jose Music Theatre. She holds a B.F.A. in musical performance from Notre Dame de Namur University; credits there include The Secret Garden (Martha), A Little Night Music (Mrs. Segstrom), and In the Heights (Nina).

Elizabeth Neff (Kaye) is making her Tabard debut. A native of Santa Cruz County, Elizabeth attended Cabrillo College and San Jose State University earning her bachelor’s degree in solo piano performance, and Notre Dame de Namur University earning her master’s in vocal performance and collaborative piano. Since 1992, she has appeared as a solo vocalist and an ensemble member is numerous musicals, operas, and choral concerts in the Bay Area. A few of her favorite roles include Ella in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience, the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods, and Marian Paroo in The Music Man.

Lindsay Sommers (Donna) is very excited to make her Tabard Theatre debut. She was last seen as Dainty June in South Valley Civic Theatre’s Gypsy. Her favorite roles include Sophie in Mamma Mia, L’enfant in L’enfant et les Sortilèges, Connie Miller in The 1940s Radio Hour, and Maureen in Rent. When not in musicals, she spends her time singing at different events around the Bay Area including fundraisers, celebrations, open mics, and sporting events. She would like to thank you for supporting the arts and coming to the show!

meeT The arTiSTS

Bruce Campbell (Drums) has been playing and teaching drums and percussion in the Bay Area for over 40 years. No stranger to Tabard, he’s done many guest artist concerts with the Nineteen Jazz Ensemble and shows like Stompin’ at the Savoy, Memphis, and others. Bruce has toured nationally and internationally, performed extensively with TheatreWorks and other professional musical organizations, and is a Yamaha Drums regional artist endorsee. Having just retired from a career in Silicon Valley software sales and marketing, he’s greatly looking forward to more time for music, family, and friends.

Tim Roberts (Guitar) is a professor of music at Ohlone College. He’s a graduate of Kalamazoo College, San Jose State University, and Musicians Institute. He’s played for TheatreWorks, American Musical Theatre San Jose, American Conservatory Theater, and the Oakland, Modesto, and San Francisco symphonies. You can find Tim’s music on Spotify and iTunes (including two albums of Christmas music!).

Alonso Sanchez (Bass) is a seasoned bass player, who has been mentored by bass gurus Gus Kambeitz, Agustin Bernal, and Dan Robbins. Currently attending San Jose State University, he is part of multiple ensembles, including the New Acoustic Collective, which constantly performs around the Bay Area. This is his first Tabard production.

Keith Pennings (Announcer) is happy to return to Tabard, having been in Tabard’s very first production in summer 2001, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Linus), and more recently in Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Crown Jewels, The Elves and the Shoemaker, and Tin Pan Alley Rag. He has also performed in many productions with Sunnyvale Community Players and South Bay Musical Theatre. A musician and band leader, he is putting together a Styx/REO Speedwagon tribute band called...(wait for it)...SpeedStyx!

Tim Reynolds (Announcer) is pleased to be back, having previously appeared in Tabard productions including Snapshots (Dan), Love Letters, Adrift in Macao (Mitch), Peter and the Starcatcher (Slank/Hawking Clam), Violet (Man 2), The Story of My Life (Thomas), and Follies (Ben Stone). Tim’s favorite role to date is that of Dad to Arabelle, Libby, Site, Khali, Bandit and, of course, the pillow pillaging perfect puppy — Kiana. Thanks to Maegan for her love and support while I go out to play! Maybe next time Arabelle will come with me!

Dottie Lester-White (Choreographer) previously choreographed Tabard’s Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey; Violet; Babes in Hollywood; A Taffeta Wedding; Lady, Be Good; Stompin’ at the Savoy; and Follies Concert Version. Other choreography credits include work with such companies as American Musical Theatre of San Jose, San Jose Stage, Foothill Music Theatre, and South Bay Musical Theatre. As a performer, Dottie’s Broadway credits include No, No, Nanette with Ruby Keeler and Coco with Katharine Hepburn. National tours include Hello, Dolly!; Cabaret; Mame; and No, No, Nanette.

Rick Lewis (Writer, Arranger) created the hit Off-Broadway musical The Taffetas, which has enjoyed productions around the world, as well as Off-Broadway productions The Cardigans — Those Swingin’ Singin’ Guys from Alpha Mu Phi Pi, (Backstage New York Bistro Award) and Have a Nice Day! — A 70s Musical Flashback. In 2016, Rick founded Bridgetown Conservatory of Musical Theatre, a nonprofit training ground for middle and high school performers.

Robert Lewis (Stage Manager, Sound Board Operator) designed the sound for Tabard’s Beau Jest and Evelyn in Purgatory, after stage-managing Death Takes A Holiday, Homeward Bound, and Holiday at the Savoy and working in technical roles for most of the shows in the last five seasons. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now nearing three decades as a resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant.

Rover Spotts (Lighting Designer) provided technical direction for Tabard’s Queen of the Mist and Adrift in Macao and lighting design for Evelyn in Purgatory, Holiday at the Savoy, Crowns, I Do! I Do!, Homeward Bound, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, The Immigrant, and Starting Here, Starting Now. During the day he works as a network and systems engineer for a number of independent schools. He is the resident technical director for Lyric Theater. In the past, he has worked with Sunnyvale Community Players, 42nd Street Moon, Theatre Rhinoceros, and other Bay Area theater companies doing set, lighting, and sound design and technical direction.

Anthony Urbina (Lighting Designer) studied music management/business administra- tion at the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music. As head sound engineer for The Music School in Sunnyvale, for 18 years he’s created sound design for all theatrical shows and choral performances. He also works as a sound engineering consultant for the Kennedy Middle School and Mountain View High School choral departments, doing design of large theatrical performances including The Music Man, Seussical, Spamalot, Urinetown, Big Fish, and Catch Me If You Can. Anthony sound-engineers for local cover bands and teaches saxophone lessons. His first Tabard show was Uptown Holiday Swing, and he has returned to Tabard to design the sound for most of the 19th-season shows.

Marylyn Watts (Costume Designer) loves to laugh, especially watching anything with Lucille Ball. Having costumed countless shows for Children’s Musical Theatre and local dance companies, her first Tabard job was as costumer for the first show of the second season. Over the years, Marilyn’s skills and talents have grown beyond costuming, although she has costumed nearly all the shows since 2002. In 2008 she took over managing all aspects of the box office, and every year since has taken on more and more responsibilities, growing along with Tabard; each season has been a “new beginning” of sorts for Marilyn, especially this one!

Catherine Snider (Music Director, Keyboard) returns to Tabard having music-directed Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Radio Play, Memphis, and Peter and the Starcatcher. She has music-directed all over the Bay Area, receiving nine Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle award nominations and winning four. She has also received eight Dean Goodman awards. By day, Catherine works at The Harker School and music-directs musicals for their award-winning Conservatory, which has taken four shows to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer, Director) incorporated Tabard in January 2001, although she started working on creating the company in November 2000. To date, she has produced all of Tabard’s shows (this one is #92!). Among those 92, she has directed 19, acted in 5, and written and/or created 11 — and these do not include the four decades of work in theatre and television prior to Tabard. She has also taught theatre to every grade from Jr. Kindergarten through college and adults. As you may know, this season is Cathy’s last as artistic director. Not one to be idle, she has already begun writing the next chapter of her life. She is a certified yoga teacher, mat and aerial, with over 700 hours of training, including focusing on bone health and myofascial release. Truly, a new beginning. :)

Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) returns as technical director for this production of A Taffeta Christmas, but is spending this season transitioning from being Tabard’s technical director since 2001 to serving Tabard as technical consultant for most of the 2019 - 2020 shows. He also continues to serve on Tabard’s board. A retired engineering manager with an M.B.A., Joe enjoys working with his hands, creating and building various projects for home and theatre. Machines that he particularly enjoys are cars and clocks.

Cayleigh Coester (Light Board Operator) returns after stage-managing Beau Jest and serving as props master for Snapshots, and can often be seen serving behind Tabard’s bar. Cayleigh has worked backstage at San Jose Stage Company for Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Toxic Avenger, and The Postman Always Rings Twice, among others. She would like to thank her friends and family for their support.

Jennifer Hart (Scenic Painter) is pleased to return to Tabard after working previously on The Tin Woman, Sherlock Holmes, Queen of the Mist, Beau Jest, Snapshots, and The Explorers Club. She has a B.F.A. from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia and has been living and working in San Jose since 1996. Her previous theatre experience includes five seasons as the artist with Angels on Stage. When not painting sets, she works as an artist: painting, sculpting, illustrating, and generally being creative.

Carol Hawley (Assistant Choreographer) returns to Tabard after having choreographed Uptown Holiday Swing last season and Holiday at the Savoy the year before. She also starred in and co-choreographed Tabard’s production of Love, Laughter & Linguine and was in Stompin’ at the Savoy, Babes in Hollywood, and Lady, Be Good among the many musicals she’s done in the South Bay.
