TAG’s website is getting a facelift! By Jennifer Gilg

Among the Theatre Arts Guild’s purposes and missions is getting the word out about the wide variety of opportunities to participate in and enjoy live theatre in the Omaha metro area. * Iowa Western Community College Presents

Man of La Mancha

November 11-20

This award-winning musical is a comic tragedy portraying mankind’s struggle to better both himself and the world in which he lives. Don Quixote is an eccentric idealist in a hostile, greedy, and cynical world. If Don Quixote is a fool, it is because the world does not live up to his ideals. As the audience watches his sometimes comic, sometimes dramatic attempts to right all the wrongs of the world, they realize his efforts, though seemingly puny and pathetic, are undoubtedly pure in intent as Don Quixote carries out his self-imposed crusade. The story is inspiring, thought-provoking, and entertaining. The score is a musical delight and contains one of the most moving moments in musical theatre as Don Quixote relates his personal credo in “The Impossible Dream.”

Performances run Thursdays - Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2 PM. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students, seniors, and TAG Members. Performances take place in the IWCC Arts Center, Black Box Theatre on the campus northwest of Council Bluffs (just off Exit 8 of I-80). For info or reservations, call 712-388-7140

SPOTLIGHT

HONOR FOR TAG LIFE MEMBER BETTE SWANSON

Bellevue’s Bette Swanson was honored October 21st as one of seven Sarpy County women named Worthy Women of Distinction for 2010. The presentation was sponsored by the World Herald Media Group and held at the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center. Bette is a past president and current member of the Bellevue Little Theatre’s Board of Directors. She is a past recipient of the Theatre Arts Guild’s Norm and Louise Filbert Lifetime Achievement Award.

TREASURES ALL AROUND US

The Theatre Arts Guild is proud of and tries to publicize the broad diversity of our Omaha theatre community. A valuable segment of that community comprises the theatre departments of local colleges and universities: Creighton University; Iowa Western Community College; Metropolitan Community College; Midland University; Nebraska Wesleyan University; and University of Nebraska at Omaha. Faculty and staff work with students to introduce them to the dramatic arts and give them “real-world” experience (onstage, backstage, tech arts) within the academic setting. Then, when possible, that experience and training is put on display via full-blown productions of dramas, comedies, and musicals presented to the schools’ populations and to the public at large. By necessity, there can be only a few productions each academic year, each with a limited number of performances. The fact is that university and college productions deserve a wider audience than they usually get due to the number of performances available for the public to see. TAG members are encouraged to watch for announcements in TAGLines or the local media to alert them to shows and actors and sets they really ought to see. Resolve now to get out to more university/college shows this year! Enjoy the sparkling treasures all around us!

From TAG Member Jerry Golmanavich

An open letter to the Omaha theatre community

Many of you may know that I am supporting a project called The Magic Center that would be the headquarters for the oldest magic fraternity in this country: The Society of American Magicians. I’ve presented this opportunity to many throughout Omaha including present and previous mayors, the Convention and Visitors Bureau (where I volunteer at the Visitor Center), the Chamber of Commerce, Omaha Economic Development, and as many as I think may be interested in this project which was started about five years ago.

All that I have mentioned it to have implied support which leads me to believe that Omaha may once again want to be "Magic City." I am

Page 6: TAGLines - Theatre Arts Guild Omaha · shackled, Marley is condemned to a hellish eternity. He’s even given his own private tormentor: a malicious little hell-sprite who thoroughly

at a disadvantage since I am not officially on the Magic Center committee, so I am not always privy to the latest developments within the project. Here's what I have been told.

They are now looking for 4-5 acres or so where there may be existing offices with the potential to expand and build two theaters at some later date. One would be a small cabaret type with capacity for 50 or so and the other with a capacity of 500 or so. Included in the “vision” would be a library, archival storage and display area, a museum, classrooms, retail space and the offices for their headquarters.

As I continue to collect information, I am feeling that there may also be a need for some other community theaters for performance space. I don’t know if Magic Center theater(s) would be offered to other organizations, but under the right circumstances, I think the S.A.M. would surely consider some collaborative arrangement.

If you pull up the website http://sammagiccenter.com/ you may see what’s been going on so far. One original thought was that The Magic Center could move into a school building that is no longer being used. Omaha has a strong history in magic and some noteworthy magicians-both professional and amateur. To summarize, The Magic Center Foundation is looking for donations and a place in which to put The Magic Center. I believe this would put a feather in

our cap-or maybe a rabbit in our hat. I am looking for any type of intelligent input ([email protected]) Jerry Golmanavich Secretary, Omaha Magical Society, S.A.M. Assembly #7
