SFA Rolls Out New Tailgate Plan for 2011

School Seeks to establish True College Football Culture on Campus

Pre game tailgate activities for Lumberjack fans will takeon a true college football game day atmosphere thanks to anew “back to basics approach” designed to get everyonecloser to the action.

Under the new plan, fans will be able to set up theirtailgate venues adjacent to the Ag Pond or in any “greenspace” around Homer Bryce Stadium.

Tailgate spots will be available on a first come, first servedbasis, and there will be no reservations or fees, according toJohn Branch, assistant athletic director.

“We’ve heard a lot of feedback from both students and thecommunity that Lumberjack Alley was too far away from thestadium,” Branch said. “This is a way to re locate thetailgating environment closer to the stadium providing moreconvenience for all Lumberjack fans and students. And it’sfree.”

He said the new system is the same way most universitiesstructure their pre event tailgating activities.

“Other schools tailgate in grassy areas, under trees, whereit’s more comfortable and cooler than setting up on a hotasphalt parking lot,” he said. “That’s the direction we areheading. Basically all of the new policies were taken fromother schools. It’s a pretty common way to tailgate as wediscovered how it works on other college campuses.”

Under the new open site tailgating system, all green areaslocated within the tailgate footprint will open at 8 a.m. ongame days, regardless of the time the game is scheduled.

“You have to be present to get a spot,” Branch said. “Thiswill eliminate folks reserving a spot in advance and notshowing up to claim it.”

The new system also will avoid situations that includedcommercial solicitations, which are against University policy,he said.

“We believe this will get us back to a true college tailgatingatmosphere,” Branch said. “It’s a way to provide a great placefor fans to relax and enjoy themselves before the game in aplace that is close to the stadium. We are confident thateveryone will enjoy the new system much more than whatthey became used to at Lumberjack Alley.”

Anticipating that many fans will have questions regardingthe new tailgate plan, SFA Athletics has designed a guide thatwill help facilitate the move to the new site.

“We know there will be many questions about how andwhere to tailgate around the stadium,” Branch said. “So tomake it a little easier on our fans, we’ve put together thisbooklet to answer as many concerns as possible.”
