NOVEMBER 2018
Well InformedIN COLLABORATION WITH:
As we near the end of 2018 (and get ready to sit down to a turkey-centric Thanksgiving meal), it’s worth examining the plant-based food trend that experts say was the food trend of the past year. You may have noticed that restaurant offerings extended beyond the typical veggie burger with other plant-based proteins such as savory bean-filled breakfasts, tofu and vegetable poke bowls, and entrees featuring chickpeas, lentils, and other legumes. The good and bad news is that this
trend isn’t going away. The demand for meat alternatives—for health, environmental, and ethical reasons—continues to grow, and many businesses are happy to oblige. The downside is the potential for the market to be flooded with unhealthy, highly processed meat alternatives. Unfortunately, just because it’s vegan or vegetarian doesn’t mean it’s good for you; always look at the ingredients and balance your diet with whole foods, such as vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, and whole grain foods.
The Future of Plant-based Eating
Did You Know? Altruism is good for your healthWant to further boost your well-being and physical health? Do something for someone else. Studies show that when you do for others—especially when there’s no direct benefit to you—you may actually benefit from improved mental health, physical health, life satisfaction, and social well-being. In a study of adults over age 50, those who volunteered on a regular basis had a lower risk of developing high blood pressure (an important indicator of health) than non-volunteers, as well a lower mortality. Some of these benefits are easily explained: Volunteers who donate their time feel more socially connected, and therefore experience less loneliness and the depression. You may become more physically active through your volunteering, which means more exercise and better physical health. In terms of life satisfaction, volunteering can boost self-confidence and add more meaning and purpose to your life. Overall, making others feel good and happy can make you feel that way, too.
In the U.S, Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday dedicated to gratitude. In many American households, the Thanksgiving meal includes going around the table as each person says something for which they’re grateful. This practice may contribute to enhance happiness and well-being. Indeed, research shows that noticing the good on a daily
basis can make you feel more positive about your life. That makes sense, doesn’t it? When you focus more on the good than the bad in your life, you’re more likely to face each day in a positive frame of mind. Expressing gratitude can also make you feel better physically. Research shows that grateful people tend to engage in regular exercise and other healthy activities, and they’re proactive in seeking help for health concerns. Research also suggests connections between gratitude and better sleep (quality and duration), greater psychological health (including reduced risk of depression and lower levels of stress), and better heart health. To enjoy the many benefits of a gratitude-filled life, try these techniques:
• Keep a daily or weekly gratitude journal. First thing in the morning or at the end of eachday or week, write down 1-3 things you’re grateful for.
• Tell a spouse, partner or friend something you appreciate about them every day.
• When expressing thanks, practice saying “thank you” in a sincere and meaningful way.
• Take “gratitude walks”. Walk outside and notice as many positive things around you asyou can—sights, sounds, smells, or other sensations.
• Write a letter of gratitude to someone who did something for you for which you aregrateful but to whom you never expressed your gratitude.
Count Your BlessingsGratitude can keep you happy and healthy
