The ACSE Careers Day is designed to offer you the opportunity to develop your networking and employability skills as

well as having the chance to hear from employers about what they want to see from a great candidate. You will also

have the opportunity to network with employers who are looking for placement students and graduates specifically

from Automatic Control and Systems Engineering.

Even if you already have a placement or graduate opportunity secured, this event is an excellent way for you to learn more about what employers are looking for. You never know when that information might come in useful!

Things to consider in advance…

Dress appropriately

There is no specific dress code for this event, but think about who you will be talking to and the image that you would

like to present to them. Hint: employers have previously told us that they’re impressed by students who turn up

looking smart!

Prepare your ‘elevator pitch’

When attending networking events or careers fairs, you will usually only get a small amount of time to talk with

company representatives. Make the most of this time by preparing what you’d like to say in advance. You may wish to

cover:

Your name

Your current course and year

What opportunities you’re looking for (e.g. summer internships, Year in Industry placement, graduate role)

A well thought out question about the company, perhaps based on what they have provided in their company

bio (overleaf), or something you’ve discovered on their website. Hint: don’t try to be smart by asking a question

that you’re unlikely to understand the answer to—a simple, genuine question that you can have a conversation

about is much more impressive!
