T T A A K K E E N N O O T T E E Campolindo Instrumental Music Boosters WINTER 2013 FROM THE PODIUM Our progress through this transition year continues to be positive and noteworthy. This time of the year is always a bit of a struggle. The end of the holidays, combined with cold weather and short days takes a toll on the brain and body. Our players have remained dedicated to their art and have hung on through the challenges that each new piece presents. Each time they work the process to give a thrilling performance, they are reminded that there are few feelings more satisfying than a truly delighted audience. Coming off of very successful fall concerts with all of our ensembles, we worked through our winter repertoire in the interim period between the Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks. With the start of 2013, the students turned toward preparations for final exams, which required each to present a performance as either a soloist or as a member of a small ensemble a chamber group. This year, the final also served as an audition for a spot in the Chamber Concert to be presented on Monday, February 25 at 7:30 P.M. in CPAC. As the new semester started, we put our noses to the grindstone in order to refine and beautify our winter concert selections with the hope that it will be an enjoyable, entertaining, and uplifting experience for all. The concert will include demanding and rewarding works for every ensemble. We are very excited to have three wonderful musicians who will perform with us as guest artists. While the students have so much to learn from hearing and observing these professionals, they also get to experience the joy of rehearsing and performing with them on a live concert. The Orchestra will perform Mozart’s great Sinfonia Concertante with violinist Mariya Borozina and violist Pamela Freund-Striplen. Ms. Borozina plays with both the SF Opera Orchestra and the SF Ballet Orchestra. Read more about her at http://sfopera.com/Profile- Bios/Orchestra/Mariya-Borozina.aspx . Pamela Freund-Striplen is the Artistic Director of the Gold Coast Chamber Players, an East Bay musical treasure! Ms. Freund-Striplen has worked extensively with us coaching our viola section. What an honor it is to be able to work regularly with such a pro. Read more about her and the GCCP at http://www.gcplayers.org . The Symphonic Band will play Benscricutto’s Concertino for Clarinet and Band with clarinetist Diane Maltester, who performs widely and also teaches at CSU East Bay and St. Mary’s College. Ms. Maltester is also the co- conductor of the Diablo Wind Symphony. Read more about her at http://class.csueastbay.edu/music/faculty.php?fac ulty=maltester . It bears remembering that none of these enriching experiences could take place without the continuing support of our Instrumental Music Boosters. Thanks to them, our students get top- level support and with that support comes ongoing professional coaching, clinics with professional conductors, and the opportunity to play with some amazing professional musicians. Campolindo High School has never shied away from taking on artistic challenges and this year is no exception. To be sure, these students have my constant admiration and gratitude for giving me their attention and support with each new turn.
