Another “Congrat’s” and “thank you”
I will extend another “congratulations” and “thank you” to our graduating Seniors for four great years in our program. It was a privilege to teach you. Thank you very much for ALL that you have contributed to our program - keep playing your instruments and enjoying music! Thank you, also, to all of our families that contributed in some way, big or small to our program. A big thank you to Linda Koutris, Margo Pasek and all of the parents that contributed to our end of the year banquet. The banquet was a great evening in many, many ways. Thanks, again, to all of our parents that helped promote our band program and the arts this year. A list of students receiving awards at the banquet is included on page 6 of this newsletter.

It has been a great honor to have served as member of the HIA board. I would like to thank my fellow 2017-2018 board members for their time and commitment to the Hersey Band Program. It has been a pleasure to work with such talented, hardworking, and enthusiastic people:
Vice President – Victoria Janmohammed
Treasurer – Kendra Simpson
Recording Secretary - Debbie Popp
Corresponding Secretary- Jocelyn Lapid
Project Chair – Kristin McElmeel
Color Guard Liaison – Cristy Schuck
Thanks to everyone who volunteered to “Lend a Hand to Help the Band” this year. Special thanks to those who chaired a Committee or an Event. Your commitment was greatly appreciated and did not go unnoticed.
I encourage all families to get involved. Volunteering your time is a great way to meet other band parents, as well as an opportunity to make a difference. We are ROLE MODELS for our children and it is important that we LEAD BY EXAMPLE.
Thanks to Mr. C, Mr. Beckwith, and Sara Reich for the opportunities our children were given to learn and grow, by setting standards of excellence and challenging our children.
Thank you to the John Hersey Administration and the D214 School Board for recognizing the importance of Fine Arts in the curriculum and dedicating resources which allow our children to have enriching experiences.
Seniors—Best of everything to you and all you choose to do in the future.
Please enjoy the summer.
Thank you,
Lisa Johnson

Important Information for all Band Members!
Graduating Seniors and Students Not Returning to Band Next Year Concert uniforms must be returned to the rack in the band room dry cleaned, hung in a bag with the receipt attached, clearly showing name and date. Boys should be returning a jacket, pants, and cummerbund. Girls should be returning a dress and short jacket. If you are not going to Italy, your concert uniform must be turned in by Thursday, May 24th. All other members who will not continue in band in the 2018-2019 school year must return the concert uniform during the rehearsals on June 26, 27, 28. Concert uniform repairs are the responsibility of the student.
All Band Students ● Please make sure your concert uniforms are properly hemmed and pressed before any
performances. ● Don’t forget long black socks and marching shoes on the day of the parade! ● If you have marching shoes in wearable condition that you would like to donate, please tie the
laces together and turn them in with the concert uniforms. Thanks! Want to be checked for marching uniform before Memorial Day or have concert uniform issues for Italy? Mrs. Scherer will be in the uniform closet from 4:30 - 6:00 on Wednesday May 23rd if you have any pressing uniform needs before the parade. We can also help with concert uniform for Italy at this time. Don’t forget that hemming and care of the concert uniform is the student’s responsibility. Please call, text or email 847-780-7017 [email protected] if you need to stop in.
Initial Freshman Marching Uniform Fittings All Freshman will need to be fitted for a marching uniform before the Fourth of July parade. Please follow the schedule below. Band Camp 18-19!!
READ CAREFULLY
NEW SCHEDULE NEXT YEAR!
As explained at the last two HIA General Membership meetings, we will be shifting the camp three days earlier next August, due to concerns with marching band camp overlapping into the beginning of the school year. Next Fall, the marching band will be competing in three competitions, to be determined (noted below). In August, particularly 8/1-1/10, we will be learning 75% of what is performed throughout the Fall season. Many of the section Olympic activities will fall on August 9-10 next year. A small portion of the June rehearsal time will be spent preparing for the July 4th parade. A majority of the June rehearsal time will be spent preparing Fall season material and fundamentals. Therefore, regardless of attendance at the July 4th parade, June/July rehearsals are EXTREMELY important.Absences from Summer dates:
In the event of family vacations that conflict with June rehearsals, an explanation of conflict should be directed to Mr. C from the parents as soon as possible. Any summer music camps are also excused; notify Mr. C immediately. Students should make sure that job schedules, etc. are adjusted.
August band camp rehearsals are mandatory for all. Freshman are STRONGLY encouraged to not miss June rehearsals. Most of the learning of marching technique happens in June.
Please adjust calendars and avoid conflicts with the following dates, particularly in August:
May 16 6-9pm Incoming freshman 5:30-9 Section leaders
May 29 6-9pm Incoming freshman 5:30-9 Section leaders
