Why do young people run for office?
Monday, March 4 at 7:00 pm
What propels young people to run for office? What challenges
do they face? How does their age impact how they view public policy?
John R.D. Celock, the author of The Next Generation: Young Elected Officials and their Impact
on American Politics will explore these questions. John interviewed over 90 current and former
young elected officials nationwide for the book, the first comprehensive look at why young
people run for office. He is the president of Celock Media Group, a New Jersey based commu-
nications firm, and the editor of The Celock Report, a political news website focused on state
level politics and young elected officials nationwide. The launch editor of Westfield Patch, one
of the first profitable Patch sites in the country, John established the site as the go-to source for
Westfield news and information.
Indian Cooking with the Instant Pot
Thursday, March 7 at 7:00 pm
The Instant Pot
(electric pressure cook-
er) is all the rage! It is
also particularly well
suited for many Indian dishes. Join Charu Gupta
and fellow foodies as we learn how to prepare a
new dish and expand our knowledge of Indian
culture and cuisine. Tonight Charu will be mak-
ing Chole Curry, a chickpea curry dish, while
demonstrating how the electric pressure cooker
can cut down the cook time of this and other
dishes. She looks forward to sharing this deli-
cious, healthier yet quicker way of cooking.
Charu’s program is a demonstration, rather than
a hands-on activity; however, you will be able
to taste the finished product and receive a copy
of the recipe.

With a taste of some of the twentieth century's most important musical movements, Hit the Roof
Band reinvigorates old songs with a new twist. The duet of keyboardist and drummer will start
off with a bit of ragtime-stride, and then move into the era of swing and boogie-woogie. Next
they’ll embark on a journey of rock n ' roll frenzy, all the while explaining the history and icons
behind the movement. Hit the Roof will continue the performance in the style of the blues and
New Orleans piano, both of which have roots steeped in boogie-woogie, gospel, classical, and
funk. They blew the roof off the library at their last show, so make sure you sign up!

ist Mark Kilianski
and Fiddler Deb Shebish
Wednesday, March 13
at 7:00 pm
Mark Kilianski on guitar and Deb Shebish on
fiddle will carry on the tradition of Irish music
with vibrance and reverence. You can expect
lively reels and jigs, boisterous pub songs, and
tender ballads, as well as the stories and histo-
ry that go along with them.
After establishing an explosive musical
connection at the Appalachian String Band
Festival in West Virginia, the two teamed up.
Berklee College of Music graduate and New
Jersey native Mark Kilianski tours full time as
a solo artist, and with Americana duo Hoot
and Holler. Philadelphia fiddler Deb Shebish
holds a masters degree in Scottish Studies
from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland,

Blair, Tim O'Brien, and The Three Irish
Tenors. Sign up now!
The Kingston Trio changed pop music between the late 1950s and the late
1960s. They were the most envied, imitated, and successful pop group as
they gathered a repertoire from many sources. Their top hits included “She
Was Too Good To Me,” “A Rolling Stone,” “Blowin' in the Wind,” and
“Last Thing On My Mind.” When Ken Lelen performs the Trio’s songs, he
plays on vintage acoustic guitars for an authentic, back-in-the-day sound.
Don’t miss this special concert.

Learn about Virginia Apgar, MD, Newborn Babies and
the March of Dimes on Wednesday, March 27 at 7:00
Virginia Apgar, MD was an anesthesiologist best known for creating the Apgar
Score, a clinical system for evaluating the physical condition of newborns at birth.
She was born and grew up in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School in 1925. She was
the first woman to hold a full professorship at Columbia University. At the March of Dimes she di-
rected research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of birth defects. David Rose, Archivist of
the March of Dimes, will celebrate Women’s History Month by exploring the life of Dr. Apgar and
her lifelong quest to improve the health of babies. This program is sponsored by the Freeholder Board
through the Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs in the Department of Parks and Recreation, and is funded
in part by a grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of Cultural Affairs in the De-
partment of State.
Celebrate Women’s History Month with a Hedy La-
marr Documentary on Thursday, March 28 at 1:00
Hedy Lamarr was not only a beautiful Hollywood star--she was an inventor. An
Austrian Jewish emigrant who invented a covert communication system to help
defeat the Nazis, Lamarr was ignored and told to sell kisses for war bonds
instead. It was only toward the very end of her life that tech pioneers discovered
that it was her concept that is now used as the basis for secure WiFi, GPS and
Bluetooth technologies. Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film
Festival, and was named Best Documentary by the New York Film Critics Online.

the American Revolution not found in the
work of earlier writers. A frequent speak-

Come Hear the Music of the West African Kora (Harp)
on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:00 pm
Sean Gaskell will feature traditional songs on the
21-stringed West African kora. The kora is native
to the Mande peoples who live within the coun-
tries of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and
Guinea Bissau. The music is traditionally played
by oral and musical historians known as Griots
(Gree-ohs).
The kora is a melodic and seemingly peaceful
instrument, which is somewhat contrary to its
musical repertoire. Many songs tell ancient
stories of war and hardship, while
others praise people of high
political status and those who
helped expand the Mande Empire.
Sean Gaskell has studied
extensively under the instruction of Malamini
Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh of Brikama, The
Gambia, and Kane Mathis of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Gaskell has been featured at numerous festivals in
the US, Gambia and Senegal. Don’t miss him.
