Situation

Municipal Government Uses Software to Improve Business Data and Save $3.1 Million

“We have a lot of data, and SharePoint 2013 allows us to extract value from it. Instead of just storing it, we can turn it into information and insights.”

Paul Di FeliceAssociate Director for

Consulting and Analysis Regional Municipality of

Niagara

The Regional Municipality of Niagara, which has 3,500 employees, provides governance and services for citizens of the Niagara Region of southern Ontario, Canada. Its headquarters are in Thorold, Ontario.

• Improved access to information and exceptional search capabilities help employees find the data they need.

• Moving from paper to electronic records is expected to save CAD$3.1 million (US$3.16 million) over two years.

• Improvements in Business Intelligence allow the Region to better manage departments and increase efficiencies.

Niagara wanted to replace its IBM Cognos Business Intelligence (BI) system with one that would help staff better measure performance and quantify services. Niagara also wanted to expand its SharePoint-based enterprise content management (ECM) efforts to make information easier to find, automate records management and reduce paper usage.

Toyota Redesigns Web Portal Using Scalable Cloud and Content Management Solutions

16

“Windows Azure lets us maintain around-the-clock uptime, which is crucial for a global business…. It gives us a flexibility that was unthinkable in the era of on-premises deployments.”

Hidehiko Sasaki, General Manager,

Internet Planning Department,e-TOYOTA Division, Toyota

Global automotive company Toyota was founded in 1937 and has its headquarters in Toyota City, Japan. It sold 9.75 million vehicles in 2012, making Toyota the world’s largest automaker by sales volumes.

• Increased scalability and reliability to handle heavy traffic and maintain around-the-clock uptime.

• Lower cost of operation because the hosted cloud environment eliminates the cost of buying and maintaining on-site hardware.

• A high degree of customizability to address the needs of the many parts of the company that provide content for the site.

Toyota has 16 websites that deliver more than 100 million page views per month. The company’s GAZOO.com site offers car owners—and Toyota employees—vehicle information, social networking, news, and entertainment. The company wanted to enhance site content, increase scalability, and reduce the cost of ownership, so it rebuilt the site using Windows Azure and Microsoft SharePoint 2013.
