IV- MBA Program in Banking and Finance

Aims of the Program

The financial sector is one of the main pillars of the national economy. With the steady growth, development, and increased diversification and complexity of the financial sector, there is a growing demand for the requisite banking and financial skills.

The MBA in Banking and Finance aims to fill this need and provides candidates with a general management education and skills as well as specialized knowledge and training in banking and finance. It is expected that students will be able to acquire knowledge and analytical skills in finance, investment, and risk management in banks and financial institutions. The MBA in banking and finance will be started at the beginning of the academic year 2008 - 2009.

Program Structure

The program consists of (9) compulsory core courses (three credit hours each), (3) compulsory functional courses (three credit hours each) and (2) optional functional courses (three credit hours each). In other words, the Program requires candidates to complete a total of (42) credit hours.

Banking and Financial Institutions

Pre- requisite: NoneThis course provides a rigorous introduction to the workings of a modern banking system. In addition, it examines recent developments in the banking sector, with special emphasize on the international aspects of banking and practices and the tools and targets of monitory policy.

Corporate Finance

Pre- requisite: None This course analyzes corporate financial decisions. Topics include capital investment, equity and dept financing, financial structure and financial analysis, dividend policy, the market for corporate control, corporate risk management and others.

Financial Accounting

Pre- requisite: None This course provides candidates with a professional knowledge of accounting topics and an appreciation of the current theoretical issues in financial accounting. Statements of accounting standards, international accounting standards and exposure drafts are considered in this course.

Macroeconomics

Pre-requisite: None This course provides candidates with a graduate level knowledge and training in macroeconomic theory and applications. Topics include the measurement of income, aggregate demand and supply in closed and open economies, consumption behavior, investment, inflation, unemployment, economic growth and monetary and fiscal polices.

Managerial Accounting

Pre-requisite: NoneThis course provides students with traditional tools of managerial accounting, like product, costing, budgeting and performance evaluation in addition to the activity – based costing, value – chain analysis and strategic cost management .

Managerial Economics

Pre- requisite: None This course focuses on the economics of the managerial decision process with a practical tool for problem solving. It links microeconomics concepts with quantitative methods to develop vital tools for managerial decision making to obtain optimal solutions .

E- Banking and E-Commerce

Pre- requisite: None This course provides students with a good theoretical and practical understanding of the main concept of E-Banking, and Provides them with the legal and regulatory implication of E-Commerce. In addition, it introduces a great knowledge with risks that will be presented by E- Banking and the appropriate controls to manage those risks.

Bank Accounting and Auditing

Pre- requisite: Financial AccountingThis course provides students with a professional knowledge of accounting issues related to the commercial bank statements, treasury budget preparation and control, and foreign transaction statements. The course covers professional techniques of auditing and control over banks.

Management Information Systems

Pre-requisite: None This course highlights the nature of the technological design and management aspects of information technology, expert systems, strategic information systems and technology and business process redesign are discussed.

Market Simulation

Pre- requisite: None This course outlines the various research methodologies commonly used in addressing business questions. The course covers the necessary statistical tools and techniques for analysis for research findings. In addition, experimental and quasi-experimental research design, and empirical research design are covered.

Risk Management in Banks and Financial Institutions

Pre-requisite: Corporate Finance, Derivatives and Financial Engineering This course covers credit evaluation and control, management of loan portfolios, special credit situations such as syndicated lending and asset securitization. In addition, this course examines trading strategies and risk / return situation in rating asset / liability management and foreign exchange positions. It also covers firm value, financial operations, rating context, and various rating methods. Each of these themes is illustrated through concrete case examples.

Money and Capital Markets

Pre- requisite: Corporate Finance This course focuses on the principles and valuation techniques in money and capital markets analysis, including an overview of the investment environment and portfolio management. This course includes economic, industry and company analysis for equities as well as the analysis of bonds including price/yield relationship, duration, convexity, price volatility and others.

Derivatives and Financial Engineering

Pre-requisite: None This course provides students with an appropriate skills to develop an understanding of the relationship between managing human recourses and organizational effectiveness, and to gain the knowledge and tools needed to engage in high quality people management. It examines four important human resources management issues: staffing, development, reward systems and work systems. The theoretical framework of these issues will draw upon developments in the behavioral and socio-technical systems approaches to the institutional change.
