Talcott Mountain State ParkA Photo Tour
Talcott Mountain State Park is located in rural Simsbury, CT. The park offers hiking, picnicking, and, of course, is home to the historic Heublein
tower that overlooks the Farmington River Valley.
The hike up Talcott Mountain to the Tower is about 1.25 miles long and typically takes 30-40 minutes.
Guests are welcome to bring dogs, food, and walking sticks, but should remember to take out
what they take in to the park.
Tree trunks are marked with yellow paint along the main trail to keep hikers on their way to the Tower. A variety of wildlife may be spotted along the way,
including deer, fox and rabbits.
Bird enthusiasts will enjoy the dense foliage, especially in the fall and spring. The trees are home to a large array of species, including the occasional turkey vulture, bald eagle, or pileated woodpecker
sighting.
Atop the mountain, miles of Connecticut landscape can be observed. On the clearest days, hikers may
see all the way north to Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, NH, or down south to the thin strip of blue
that is the Long Island Sound.
Continuing down the path along the top of Talcott Mountain, guests will find the entrance to the Heublein Tower. The structure was built as a summer home by Gilbert Heublein in 1914.
The 165-foot tower is now a museum open to the public. It is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Guests can see the various
rooms of the home and enjoy the gift shop on the bottom floor.
The observation deck on the top floor of the Tower offers views to the north, south, east and west.
Helpful signs inform guests what landmarks to look for on each side. Bring binoculars!
