SPENCER HIDGEDIRECTORPREMIER ENTERTAINMENT NETWORK

A warm welcome to the Century Club for Premier Entertainment Network’s inaugural Talent Care Conference. With maximum capacity having been reached weeks ago, we are thrilled that so many influential figures have recognised the importance of this conference to be here with us today. The welfare of famous names has often been an afterthought, but we are hoping that gatherings such as these will encourage those within the sector to come together for the benefit of safeguarding the careers of talented individuals. Those in the public eye have to contend with a multitude of evolving issues and it is only by sharing experiences and strategies that the

industry as a whole will be able to offer greater support to those under the glare of the spotlight. Our sister company has organised a renowned Talent Care Conference for several years. When we started exploring the concept of a similar gathering for the entertainment industry, it quickly became clear that this is an area that could benefit from more understanding, knowledge-transfer and, above all, talking. We hope that this gathering will represent the start of the conversation. We are very grateful to our partners for supporting this event and we hope that the contents of the carefully-designed conference programme will give you plenty of food for thought.

EXPLOITATION IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRYThe fall-out of the Harvey Weinstein scandal has exposed a dark side of the entertainment industry, with numerous actors having spoken of their own experiences of being exploited by those in power on their journey up the career ladder. However, exploitation in the entertainment industry takes many forms, from young talent being denied their due payments by unscrupulous companies and promoters to those who are forced to plough on through inadequate working conditions.

In this session, a panel of experts will provide real-life examples and scenarios of the kinds of exploitations that talent – and their support team – need to be aware of, and the steps that can be taken to mitigate any such dangers.

■ Why has exploitation been allowed to flourish in an industry in which there is so much public scrutiny? ■ What are the reporting procedures in place for those who believe they have been exploited? ■ How can talent managers be proactive in minimising the dangers of exploitation? ■ What due diligence can the support team carry out to safeguard their client?

SAVING FOR THE FUTURELevels of financial income for those in the entertainment industry are notoriously unpredictable, especially for those in the early stages of their careers, with payment rates often differing wildly from one job to the next. It is therefore easy to see how those who do enjoy a sudden stint in the limelight – and the financial awards associated with such status – can struggle to manage their financial situation responsibly and in their long-term interests.

In this session, experts will discuss the financial planning that needs to take place to ensure individuals can support themselves long after the limelight has faded.

■ When should a talented individual begin to put firm financial plans in place? ■ How can they invest their money wisely, with an eye on the future? ■ Where can individuals – and their support teams – get the necessary advice to protect their long-term financial interests? ■ Aside from established investment vehicles and products, are there other steps that individuals can take to boost their

income and safeguard their savings in the long run?

TRAVEL & TOUR MANAGEMENTManaging a tour can be a fiendishly difficult task for any manager, promoter or agent, juggling a series of performances in different locations – often with very little time to travel from one venue to another. There are numerous aspects to consider, from accommodation and sustenance for the talent and his or her entourage through to arranging security, fan meet-ups, and for the right equipment and facilities to be in place at each location.

In this session, the challenges of putting together a tour will be analysed in detail and specifically how to put together a series of dates in the calendar that works for the performer or performers and at the box office.

■ How do you identify the right venues for your tour? ■ Which services should be provided by each host venue and which should be covered by the tour organisers? ■ What are the key points in arranging effective security measures for such trips? ■ How challenging is it for a tour manager to adapt plans close to the event?

EVOLUTION OF TALENT SCOUTING AND ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENTThe process of spotting and protecting talents and steering them through a successful career in entertainment has evolved significantly in recent years. Even the most successful stars face big setbacks at times and have to develop the resilience to deal with the rejections, as well as the breakthroughs, and protect themselves from risks associated with social media such as invasions of privacy, extortion and harassment.Mitigating risk, though, is an issue that is increasingly important on both sides of the talent-scouting table. Exploring past posts on social media is just one part of the due diligence process when it comes to finding out about the person behind the public persona – and whether he or she is a character with whom a promoter or management company would like to associate in the long term. How can you protect talent from invasions of privacy, extortion and harassment by helping them manage their digital profile?

■ How have talent-spotting processes changed in the entertainment industry – and where are they going? ■ What can record labels, agents and management companies learn from an individual’s past posts on social media? ■ To what extent should a management company carry out due diligence on a star’s family and support network? ■ How can a promoter put practical steps in place to protect itself against adverse associations with stars?

PREPARING TALENT FOR LIFE AFTER THE SPOTLIGHTThe transition from celebrity to post-celebrity status can be a traumatic experience for someone who has become accustomed to the trappings of fame and fortune. Whether the individual is fortunate enough to be in control of his or her retirement or whether he or she simply has a work schedule that has dried up over time, adjusting to a new life can be fraught with difficulties – physical, mental and financial.

In this session, experts will look at the steps that can be taken to support an individual as they slip out of the spotlight.

■ What are the mental and physical challenges of life after fame and how can they be tackled? ■ Which organisations can the individual refer to and rely on after they have retired? ■ What role should an agent or manager play in the post-working lives of their clients? ■ When should talented individuals begin to prepare for life after the limelight?

TACKLING ADDICTIONSThe entertainment industry is full of figures who have struggled with a variety of addictions, but getting to grips with these issues – which can have a huge impact on a person’s life and career – is vital. In terms of prevention and education, as well as effective treatment, keeping a talent away from darker temptations and long-term problems remains a key responsibility of anyone within the support circle.

In this session, a panel of experts will explore how to support those who have fallen foul of additions such as gambling, alcohol or drugs, and how to help them return to health and get their careers back on track.

■ When should entering rehab become a viable option? ■ How should you deal with the media on this issue? ■ In which areas are there particular addiction problems in the industry currently and what should the talent manager

consider when deciding when to intervene? ■ How are support staff able to recognise when a talented individual has a problem?
