New teaching and training space in the Gene J. Colin Education Hall at our Georgetown Campus was celebrated at a ribbon-cutting event. The 9,800 square-foot addition to the existing building is LEED-certified, and was designed and built using energy-efficient, sustainable, and water saving strategies. Funding for the $5.2 million structure came from the Washington State Legislature, the U.S. Economic Development Administration and the Norcliffe Foundation. Following the brief ceremony, guests had an opportunity to tour the new facility, which will be a technology training portal for green, sustainable jobs, and a center for business development and entrepreneurial training. Gene J. Colin is the CEO of Ferguson Construction, a major regional construction company with many ties to the businesses and labor unions served by the Georgetown Campus, and also chair of the South Seattle Community College Foundation.

Let’s Do Lunch! The highly successful Let’s Do Lunch program returned for Fall Quarter. The program, in which students invite a faculty member to lunch on campus, is designed to support and nurture relationships between students and faculty. Students obtain the instructor’s signature on an application and then receive a $30 meal ticket, which can be used at Café Alki, Alhadeff Grill or the cafeteria. After lunch, the student and instructor fill out a short evaluation form. So far nearly 50 faculty members have dined with students. Dr. Jill Biden, the second lady of the United States, spent a July afternoon with aviation-technology students at South’s aviation hangar, a satellite classroom at Boeing Field. Biden, an 18-year community-college instructor, was in Seattle as part of the Community College to Career program spearheaded by the Obama administration. Dr. Biden stopped in for a roundtable discussion about the Seattle Community College industry partnerships in the aviation-aerospace, manufacturing, and maritime industries.

The federal initiative awarded South and several other community colleges a $20 million grant to offer more classes in technical-education programs that had yearlong waiting lists. Coupled with another $20 million state grant to Washington community colleges, South is able to train three times as many students in the two-year Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program this year. The graduation rate among technical

programs such as the AMT program is 95 percent, and hiring opportunities are strong. Though the good chances for employment upon graduation are a big plus, something else stood out to Dr. Biden. "The common thread here is that the students who come to these programs love their jobs," she said.

Guidelines regarding requesting announcements.

The readerboards are for college-sponsored and college-related events. Examples include student activities, job and information fairs, wine and garden events, and visitor/special guest welcomes. Sorry, we can’t put your birthday up there.

If you would like a readerboard announcement, please email Mary Kohl with the message wording including the name, time, place, and date of your event. Please provide as much notice as possible so your message can be scheduled in a timely manner.

There are only four screens so PIO makes judgments regarding priority of placement and rotation. Last-minute situations arise when an important meeting or event has been scheduled with very little notice, which may necessitate schedule adjustments.

No bells or whistles. Sorry, our official variance prohibits the use of electronic special effects like fireworks, wine corks popping, bulbs blooming, or the like.

October 2 Two students in the Aviation Program called security when one of them noticed that some electrical equipment and the cart it was on was missing from the classroom. The equipment value was minimal. It was used in classroom demonstrations. The classroom door, where the equipment was located, was unlocked.

October 3A student reported that the tires were stolen off his mountain bike while it was secured to a bike rack on campus. The student noted another secured bike of his had been stolen earlier this year.

October 3Two instructors called Security to Olympic Hall and reported that a student was threatening to do harm to herself. Security called Seattle Police Department and South’s security chief. The student denied that she was going to harm herself, but had told a friend she was going to cut herself with a box cutter. The student was taken to a counselor for evaluation.

October 12Bills and coins were taken from a vending machine on campus. Security checked the other machines on campus and discovered money had been taken from another machine as well.

CAmPus Security ReportsOctober 15A student told security that he had been “jumped” by a group of non-students he described as a “rival gang.” He reported that he had been threatened before by the same individuals. The student was interviewed by security and Student Services who reported the incident to the police.

October 19A student reported that his car had been damaged while parked in the south lot. The security camera was unable to record the incident.

October 25A student reported that her car had been hit while parked in the south parking lot. There was a note on the windshield from a security officer that indicated he had spoken to a witness of the hit and run. The damage to the car was cosmetic. The student stated there had been minor damage to the car before the incident.

October 28A security officer noticed that a building at the Georgetown Campus had been “tagged” with graffiti. In addition, a line had also been sprayed across the whole east side of Building C.

“Finally”, said everyone who works at South. Thank you everyone in Student Services who helped work on this project and many thanks to Brandon Tutmarc who was a vital contributor to the project. Our web site and email template now match our print collateral and we are on track to strengthen our branding as we move forward. The PIO is looking to continue to improve the delivery of web content to students and the community by improving the user interface and accessibility of its online information. The launch of the new South web site and its resources will elevate the functionality beyond just paragraphs of text and PDF documents. We will increase usability as well as brand awareness with a template that will be consistent on all web pages. This template will have the ability to reach every page with updates to the entire site in its navigation and brand evolution. The new site will also be search engine optimized to ensure that South gets the highest rankings possible among its competition on the web. Also added are ways to include sharing pages using social media and tracking so users may increase South’s exposure while they interact with our pages. With some of the latest tools and techniques available it will be possible to analyze the usage statistics page by page. Measurement and analysis of user activity will help the college achieve the intended objective of this resource, and allow South to evolve toward the most successful online resources. Measuring the outcome of usage will help form marketing strategies and future improvements.
