IntroductionIn one’s entire life, there would be several

times that in our personal and humanrelationships one would be involved in a quarrel,misunderstanding or fight. The usual attitudewhen we are advised to get reconciled is:whoever has committed the wrong must be theone to ask for an apology or forgiveness.

But in our Gospel for today, Jesus tells us:If your brother or sister has sinned against yougo and point out the fault when the two of youare in private. So it is not important who is rightor wrong, but that one gets reconciled at once.

The Duty of Fraternal CorrectionIn our First Reading, the prophet Ezekiel

advises us: If you do not warn the wicked manto turn from his ways, he will die because of hissin, but I will also call you to account for hisblood. If you warn the wicked man to turn fromhis ways and he does not do so, he will die forhis sin, but you yourself will be saved.

Our Gospel for today tells us how to bereconciled with our brother/sister who wrongedus. First, go to him in private to be reconciled(not to blame him/her). Second, if number onefails, bring one or two people to advise and helpboth of you settle your differences (not to sidewith you to put the other down). Third, if numberthree fails, bring the matter to the church whichcan help settle the matter out of love (not to the

I Am My Brother’s Keeper court which punishes the guilty). Fourth, ifnumber three fails, regard him/her as a gentileor a tax collector.

Most of us would brand someone ashopeless, useless, when that one is so adamantto listen to persuasion and advice. Most of uswould say, that person is so bad that he wouldgo to hell, because there is no hope for him.But that is not what Jesus meant when hesaid to treat that one as a gentile or a taxcollector.

Jesus treated gentiles and tax collectors withlove and compassion. He frequented theircompany, visited them in their homes and atewith them. He brought them God’s love andmercy. And this is what he meant to tells us.

ConclusionWe must never regard someone as

hopeless or irredeemable, because he does notlisten or turn away from his wickedness. Jesuswants us to continue treating that one with loveand respect as what St. Paul tells us in theSecond Reading to the Romans, let love be theonly debt of one to another. Love cannot dothe neighbor any harm. Love can change eventhe most hardened sinner. This is what Jesuswants us to treat people who do not turn awayfrom their wickedness, to always treat them withlove and compassion, because no one ishopeless, no one is irredeemable.
