a neW look for HAVE YOUR SAY SUBIACOThe city’s online community engagement hub has recently been refreshed and is now easier than ever to navigate. as well as providing you with access to plans and other documents related to past, current and upcoming projects, have your Say Subiaco allows you to provide us with feedback on everything from major projects, development applications and local law amendments to heritage items, business plans and planning policies. Visit www.haveyoursaysubiaco.com.au today and tell us what you think about the items currently open for consultation.

The refreshed Have Your Say Subiaco website

RECYCLING made eaSierThe city has recently moved to comingled recycling, collected fortnightly. That means there is no longer a need to separate recyclable items into different bins – recycling facilities have the technology to take care of this process.

residents and businesses are asked to place all recyclables in the bin with the yellow lid, with any overflow recycling to go in the bin with the red lid. please note that the day of your collection has not changed and general waste will continue to be collected weekly as per the existing schedule.

To find out which week your recycling is collected, refer to the map at the bottom of the page – a larger version is on our website. We’ve also put together a list of recycling tips.

for more information about the changes to recycling, including frequently asked questions, visit www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/wastechanges

THINK2030 To reViTaliSe STraTegic communiTy planlate last year, we revisited the city’s 2011 community visioning project, Think2030, and asked you to provide us with feedback on our progress. community consultation took place over a six-week period and we received many valuable insights – thank you for your participation.

currently, we are in the process of applying the findings to the Strategic community plan – the city’s principal guiding document – and a draft will be available for community consultation soon.

for more information, including the current Strategic community plan, visit haveyoursaysubiaco.com.au and follow the link to the Think2030 project page.

green ThumbS up FOR VOLUNTEERSBy environmental volunteer Eveline Masco

if you like the outdoors and aren’t afraid of getting your hands dirty, consider joining the city of Subiaco’s environmental Volunteer program. now in its second year, the program relies on about ten volunteers who come together on the last friday of every month, from 9am to 11am, in one of the city’s parks or reserves. The volunteers assist in activities such as the planting of native species, weed control and wildlife nest box monitoring.

giles pickard, who coordinates the city’s environmental Volunteer program, enjoys seeing people from all ages come together to care for their environment.

“it is amazing to see how much you can achieve with a small group of people,” he said. “Take, for example, the planting in the rosalie green corridor – we couldn’t have done that without our volunteers.”

Volunteer Shirley mcinnes has been living in the area for more than forty-five years and has seen the parks evolve in a positive way. “They now have more native plants,” she said. “i love being outside in the parks we used to visit with our children and being part of that change.”

The volunteer program also has an educational aspect. Volunteers can gain practical experience and new skills by engaging with professionals in the environmental field.

This is what drew volunteer donna marcun to the program. originally from Seattle, donna didn’t know anything about Western australian plants before she joined. “The planting is my favourite bit,” she said. “and we get taught so much by giles as we go along.”

according to volunteer brian middleton, the benefits of the program are endless. “i love giving back to the community, doing something positive for the environment and getting out in the fresh air. it’s a great way to exercise, but the most rewarding part is seeing the results of what you’re doing, whether it’s planting or weeding.”

donna agrees: “it is so great to look at the parks and think, ‘i planted this’. it’s like leaving a little legacy.”

To learn more about the environmental Volunteer program or to get involved, call the city’s environmental team on 9387 0942 or email [email protected]

mainTaining our URBAN FORESTThroughout the year, green waste, in the form of leaves, flowers, fruit and small branches, falls beneath trees as part of the trees’ growing cycle. raking tree debris onto the road, footpath or into drains is strongly discouraged.

To manage this debris and ensure our verges and streetscapes continue to look neat and tidy, the city provides the following:

• agreenwastecollectionservice

• fortnightlystreetsweeping

• avergeassistanceprogram.

your assistance in maintaining the verge adjacent to your property is appreciated. by raking up and bagging the green waste on your verge, you’re helping both the city and your community to:

• reducealgalblooms,causedbyexcessnutrients,inourwater bodies

• keepdrainsfreefromdebris, whichcancauseblockagesand result in localised flooding

• keepthefootpathandroadfreefromobstructions

• preventdamagetotheinternalvacuumofthestreetsweepers.

To ensure our urban forest continues to thrive, the city inspects all street trees four times a year. These inspections determine whether any remediation works are required.

for more information about the city’s services, visit www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/greenwaste or call 9387 0942.
