Hello everyone,
And hello December! The Christmas holiday season has officially begun. In response to residents concerns BHA has been focusing on community safety. We encourage all to look after your neighbours and visitors this summer. We are lucky that our local police and CFA are very approachable and willing to talk to community groups like ours. A strong theme from our discussions over the past two months is the importance of building strong communities and working relationships with our neighbours.
At our November meeting we welcomed Helen Woods Captain of the Barwon Heads CFA, Ian Beswicke Bernadette van Nourdenberg from CFA Community Education. The CFA plays an important role in the Barwon Heads community, however we are all responsible for ensuring we remain safe and make intelligent choices in the face of a potential threat.
We are lucky that Barwon Heads is deemed a low risk fire area, however we are very aware of areas of high risk and in particular Stephens Pde, parts of the 54 acres and the western end of town. Please go to the CFA website cfa.vic.gov.au or visit the CFA in Barwon Heads or Ocean Grove to pick up information.
We discussed potential safe places if there is the need to leave home and be somewhere safe. Suggestions are that the beach is not always the right place to be, and that maybe the centre of town is appropriate. Your own home is also likely to be safe.
Operations Officer, and
Be prepared: - Develop a plan with your neighbours
- Create a defendable space, remove inflammable objects from around the house, break up fuel continuity, carefully select, locate and maintain trees pick up the CFA brochure Coastal Garden or download from the CFA website cfa.vic.gov.au/plants
- have a battery operated radio for use if the power goes down
- install the CFA App on your mobile phones- watch the long term weather forecasts and
have a plan for the high risk code red days- if you are elderly or alone be prepared to
spend the day with friends or family- understand the wind and the potential
impacts of a change from northerly to south westerly winds
- always wear appropriate clothing and if you are in your car ensure you have suitable clothing with you (proper boots, long sleeved tops made from natural fibres, long pants etc)
We also repeat the advice from our October meeting attended by the district leader of Victorian Police. Please lock your houses & cars. Call 000 if you are concerned. Pick up a Victoria Police Residential Information Kit from the Ocean Grove Police Station. Be aware.
The BHA is keen to start the conversation regarding the revival of Neighbourhood Watch in Barwon Heads. We will organise a community meeting to discuss this in the New Year. If you are interested please contact us via our website or talk to one of our Committee.

We thank our member for Bellarine Lisa Neville for her support for safer pedestrian amenity in Barwon Heads. We understand that works on four new zebra crossings have been agreed and that this project will begin in the new year. The BHA has played an active role in this consultation process.
The meeting agreed that our meetings will now commence at 7:00pm. Our next meeting will be held at the Barwon Heads Bowling Club. Join us for a Xmas drink.
Please join us and email your thoughts to us through our website. www.barwonheadsassociation.com

they’ve been left for us, or in all the organisational things that keep us able to run this shop. So it’s a great pleasure when we are able to have our meeting, and know that the volunteer organisations such as the two Fire Brigades, the two Surf Life-Saving Groups, or Riding for the Disabled, and Friends of the Bluff, and the many others, will receive their cheques in early December. We know that so many of these organisations rely on this input, and others’, such as that from the Bendigo Bank, to keep on doing the great job they do. It is so good to receive the letters of thanks that usually accompany a receipt of our cheque, and often, offers of help to us. We are so fortunate that thanks to John Brady, we are able to send on many items to the Rotary organisations called “Donations-in-Kind”. We also put money towards the very costly shipping containers which take those goods on to recipients in third world countries. We send many children’s books, but are somewhat dismayed when we are left very costly text books, which rarely are seen as suitable for their use. PLEASE NOTE THAT MOST TEXT BOOKS JUST GO TO RECYCLING!Many people ask by what means we decide how to give money to the various groups. (Lists of our donations can be seen in each of our shop areas). Certain groups, such as the Community Hall, Jirrahlinga, and Cottage-by-the-Sea are seen as self-evidently needing whatever help we can give, and these groups routinely receive our donations. Other groups, such as the Soccer Club made us aware of their needs when they were starting up, and
report back to us when they send receipts. Other groups make a verbal request through one of their volunteers, and this is usually sufficient, though a letter always helps. At the most recent distribution meeting, we were all most appreciative that a representative of a recently-formed group, the Barwon Heads Refugee Committee, came to speak to us, and alert us to the great need for many refugees who live in our area, to gain access to interpreters, and legal assistance. Whilst we are all still reeling from the dreadful occurrences recently in France, most of us know that the perpetrators represent a very small number of those who seek help from our more privileged countries. Having read the document which was presented to us telling of the 58 pages each refugee has to process to pass our strict regulations, and the $60 an hour for an interpreter, we were only too pleased to be able to donate $1,100 to the group of Barwon Heads residents who will assist these unfortunate people. Having spoken of sad matters, I’m very aware, (especially with small grand-children reminding me), that Christmas is coming very soon. Do keep in mind that we have many things that would make most suitable gifts, and will help the community while we help you. On behalf of all the volunteers of the Op Shop, may I wish you all a safe, wonderful Christmas, and peace to all. God bless you, Helen Edwards - Shop Supervisor
Our November concert was a real revelation as the Year 9 wind instrument students from The Geelong College performed an amazing range of pieces & composers in their varied groups & ensembles. Peter Hannah has been teaching music at The Geelong College for 33 years & has never had such a multi- talented group as they all play at least 3 or 4 instruments! It does show how much they love music & are prepared to work hard to be as versatile at such an early age!The instruments they performed on are as follows: Rory on Alto & Baritone Saxophone; Behlana on Bassoon & Violin; An on clarinet & piano & has an amazing ability of perfect pitch; Melissa on Flute; Jack on Clarinet; Ebony on Clarinet & Bass Clarinet; Georgia on Clarinet & Violin. Their first work was by the great Baroque German composer, J S Bach (1685-1750). He wrote 4 Orchestral Suites & they performed Gavottes 1&2 from his first Suite in C. The group included PH(teacher) Melissa, An, Georgia, Rory, & Behlana.
The Wind Quintet with PH, Melissa, Jack, Ebony & Rory then chose to play from a collection of 10 small works of Great Masters by Josef Bonisch, firstly Adagio by Mozart (1756-1791) & then Gavotte by P Martini(1741-1816). Moving forward in history to 20th century, Josef Bonisch was a German composer & flautist & they chose to play his Russian Folk Songs & Dances for Clarinet Quartet. In keeping with the folk songs of Bonisch, the next choice was for the Woodwind Choir which is very unusual as it requires all wind instruments to be included. They chose “A Wexford Carol” arranged by William Rhoads, who commented that this piece was inspired by a traditional singer in County Wexford, Ireland & is recognised as a Christmas carol. Then back to the Classical period with one of the most prolific composers, Mozart, a Pavane by William Byrd (an English composer of the Renaissance period) & arranged by Franz Watz. (It is interesting to note that the only instruments that were around at the time from the woodwind family was the primitive version of the flute, oboe & bassoon. The clarinet & certainly the saxophone had not been invented, but thanks to the arranger, Harry Gee, they were able to play all the instruments!) “The Easy Winners Rag” by Scott Joplin, African American composer (1868-1917), the King of Ragtime music was lively & great fun & accompanied on piano by An. Next were three movements based on traditional Sea Shanties arranged by Tony Mason which were “Up Anchor”, then “The Bog-eyed Man”, & finally “A-Roving”. The last piece for the Woodwind Choir was “The Knight” by Romantic composer, Robert Schumann & introduced by PH. “ It is interesting that the piece we are playing is in a minor key. Interesting, because Schumann’s wife, Clara, hated that he wrote so many minor key romances & fantasies that she made him write in a Tiece de piccardi, which means finish with a Major chord! What power she had over him! He seems to have won this battle as it concludes as it began in the minor.”The Bassoon/Clarinet Quartet performed the next two pieces: the first was “Samba De Bahia” from a state on the east coast of Brazil & arranged by Ernst-Thilo Kalke & the second was “El Choclo” also arranged by Kalke. It is a popular song called “The Corn Cob” written by Angel Villoldo, an Argentinian musician, & is one of the most popular tangos in Argentina. To finish, a change of instruments, Georgia & Behlana performed one movement of the double Violin Concerto in D minor by JS Bach which was a wonderful work for the two violinists to perform to show their musical adaptability & complete the very successful & exciting concert! Our final concert for the year will be held on Sunday December 13th at 2.30pm in the Barwon Heads Anglican Church. Well known trio with Ben Castle on violin, Regina Thomae on piano & Brighid Mantelli on flute will perform a wonderful program for us. Donation: Friends/ Members:$10; Visitors:$15. All welcome to stay for afternoon tea following the concert. Enquiries: please phone Jenny on 5254 2580.
Christmas GiftsWe are always so thankful for all our community support, but at this time of the year, we are also proud that we can tell once again of our giving $60,000 to church and community, which is the main part of our mission. That makes $140,000 for the year, which is such a great result for our nine hours a week, (except for holiday openings), when we actually sell. Of course, as you know, we spend MANY more hours each week at the shop, when we sort, display, and sadly, discard those things we can’t sell. I am grateful to all the people who call in to suggest means of getting rid of unwanted items such as the unsaleable BBQ. In fact, for the teams who work on Monday to sort, etc, it takes at least two to three hours, then on Tuesday, another couple of hours are needed to meet the man who takes bags of discarded clothes away. None of this takes into account the time taken in putting things away when

Great news Rocker Ramage ...who recently found out that he has successfully qualified to
play Under 12's soccer for the National Premier League Club, North Geelong Warriors! He had 3 phases of trials to take part in, over 4 days at Elco Park, Lara. The competition for places was extremely high, with boys trialling out from many clubs in the Geelong region and most a year older than himself.

Barwon Heads Red Cross would like to thank Annie an Hamish at "Annie's Provedore" for a most generous event last week. They offered us the use of their space and then provided a fantastic dinner of pizza and wine. If you haven't tried the pizzas made by the pizza chef Vic, you have missed out on something special. The most surprising pizza was one with the main ingredient being cauliflower but there were other magical flavours too.A great night thankyou Annie and Hamish. Heads Up!When a restaurant is perfectly positioned to capture ocean, wilderness, or valley-below views, there is always the worry that this will be the restaurateur's laurels on which to rest. That is, they are hoping that the views will make up for the average and/or over-priced food on offer. Such is not the case with the new management at 'At The Heads Bar, Café & Restaurant' in Barwon Heads.
Instead, it is a perfect marriage of dreamy ocean views and beautiful food. We were fortunate enough to be invited to a splendid 'significant birthday' lunch there recently, with as the hostess put it “45 of my favourite people.” It was an afternoon of gastronomic pleasure piled upon pleasure. Every detail of the menu had been finely curated, from the wickedly more-ish local marinated olives to the roasted fresh fish, house-cured meats, and salads that were made for consuming rather than just providing a green backdrop. Much of the food is locally produced and this may partly account for the great flavours of the day. But accolades should also go to chef Jack Mackie who produced an unpretentious but well-balanced Mediterranean-style menu of beautiful quality. A particular favourite was the subtle flavours of his pickled Portarlington mussels. All of this was enhanced by terrific service, with pleasant and efficient wait-staff on hand whenever the need arose, and often anticipating needs before they arose. This is not a restaurant that is resting on its sea change or sea-view laurels, but is working hard to produce a h i gh -qua l i t y d i n i ng expe r i ence . H igh l y recommended. But he never lost his hope.
When he told me tomorrow was going to be an ordinary day, I knew exactly what he meant. Tomorrow - 9 months after his diagnosis - he was going to do what they told him he couldn’t do.
Tomorrow he was going to go back to work. And play his guitar.
Think lateral side openers, uijiyi breath and pratyahara.
For many of us at this time of year, we take a step back from “the ordinary.” Most of us will be counting down to a few sleep-ins over summer and few days off from the grind of busy lives. But if we make the time to stop and appreciate the fact that we can wake and greet our days in the fashion and style we choose, we have the opportunity to see the extraordinary within the ordinary. That for many, the ordinary is a simple gift of grace. One that we don’t appreciate until it’s taken from us. Or from one who we love.
I know that tomorrow I’ll wake to the calling of the dawn birds and to my mat while my friend wakes to the calling of his alarmed clock and his guitar. And that while our ordinary mornings look a little different from each other, we will both be giving thanks for the fact that they are allowing the unfolding of something quite extraordinary.
They are allowing the unfolding of ourselves. x

So, he told me tomorrow would be an ordinary day.
It’s something I don’t think of often. An ordinary day. One in which I will wake up to the sound of the morning’s calling, roll out my yoga mat and then un-roll my sleepy body. I don’t think twice about what a gift it is to start my day like this. I don’t think twice about the love that permeates through the sleeping walls of my home. In fact, each morning I don’t think twice about very much at all. I start my day feeling and breathing deeply into myself in order that I can simply be more awake to my life’s presenting process.
For my friend, his ordinary days were taken from him 9 months ago. While playing his guitar he noticed his left hand was kinda slow. He started laughing when things weren’t really that funny. He had a headache that panadol couldn’t touch. A barrage of tests followed to show he had something with a lot of size and syllables in his brain. It was labelled a stage that makes you stop work and contemplate your bucket list. Frozen meals start landing on his front door.
Even though it was his diagnosis, it rocked all of our worlds. While he stared at his own mortality, we stared at ours. It was unfair, uncomfortable and so very, very sad. Radiation started as words of sympathy poured in. He lost his left playing hand. He lost his ordinary mornings. He lost his luscious dark hair.

When we are in a Twisting pose, we are compressing one side of the body. We are squeezing out stale blood
and toxins from all of the digestive organs. When we come out of the Twist, fresh clean blood comes flooding in to replenish the organs and the intestines. Twisting poses relate to our Solar Plexus Chakra situated between the belly button and the centre of the chest. The Solar Plexus connects to our feelings and self-esteem. It is
interesting to note that not only do Twists connect to our physical digestion but also to how we emotionally digest information. When we are in our Twisting poses, we can take the opportunity to squeeze out and let go of any unwanted emotions. The twisting action of the spine stimulates the central nervous system. Therefore, Twisting poses are also energising and predominantly Yang (masculine) in nature. With the upcoming festive season, it may be a great time to consider the many benefits of Twisting. Picture this possible scenario on Christmas Day at the dinner table............You are eating and digesting lots and lots of food. In addition, you are with your family digesting lots and lots of information. You are beginning to feel slightly overwhelmed. You excuse yourself from the table, go outside, find a quiet spot and gently apply some twisting and releasing!Merry Christmas to all!Healing from the inside out Deb PrinziTo see past articles from Talking Heads go to my blog www.summitenergyhealing.com
Y o g a and T w i s t i n g Poses
Twisting Poses are great Poses!
We can practise them standing up, sitting and lying down, when we are side stretching and even when we are tipping the body upside down! When practised mindfully there are many benefits to practising Twists. It is important to note that Twists do not apply to the whole spine. The spine has three main sections: 1) The Lumbar spine is comprised of the first five vertebrae at the base of the spine. It has a about a five-degree rotation and its purpose is mainly to bend forwards and backwards and to provide a stable base for the rest of the spine; 2) The Thoracic spine is comprised of the next twelve vertebrae inside the ribcage. It has about a 35-degree rotation and this is the area that is the focus of our spinal twisting; 3) The Cervical spine is comprised of the last seven vertebrae and they are located inside the neck. The rotation of the neck is included when the pose progresses a further step to direct the Drishti (gaze). As always, we need to engage our Bandhas (locks) to stabilize the lower back, support the torso and protect the neck. Also, remember to inhale and lengthen the spine before twisting so that there is space created between each vertebra.

| COMMUNITY ARTS GARDEN"
Spring is always a busy time for gardeners, and the Community Garden is no exception! Here are some of the recent goings-on: 1) Annual General Meeting: This was held on Sunday November 8. There were changes at the helm: Michael Murphie stepped down as President, after serving for the last 2 years. Under Michael's leadership, a number of new projects and new directions have been achieved, and the Committee has functioned well. We all thank you, Michael, for the time and dedication you have put into this role. In Michael's place we have elected John McIntosh, who has been instrumental in driving many projects in the last two years. No doubt we will see more of this infectious enthusiasm in the year(s) ahead. Also ending his term of service is Chris Bowly, who has served ably as Treasurer for 5 years. Thanks for a job very well done Chris. Michael Murphie has agreed to take over the books from Chris. The rest of the Committee for the coming year is Carmel Smith, Rob Armstrong, Deb Read, Chris Bowly and Russell Mitten. Representing the Sustainability Group are John Burke and Margot Busch. Carmel has taken over the role of Plotholder Manager, which has been held ably by Liz Dickson for several years.
2) Paving: After a long time of talking and gradual collecting of old pavers, we have at last completed the paving of the outdoor eating area on the north side of the Garden Room. Much of the preparatory work was driven by John M and Rob A, and the job was completed at our last working bee. It looks great! The area will now be a dust-free and pleasant sitting and eating area. Also, the area where we have been storing pavers has become free, and there are plans to convert this into a new and
better play area for kids. We also have a “new” old speedboat, donated by members Cassie and Frank Twomey, which will be used in the play area. More plans for a new storage building and doing “something” with the now-empty chook pen are in the pipeline.
Paving done at last!
3) Garden Box Renewals: With the passage of time, some of our original garden boxes have come to the end of their life. Even our famous garden “ute” is sinking slowly back into the earth! A number of boxes along our east border are to be replaced and reconfigured. We now have 22 active plot-holders, and some magnificent summer crops are developing.
The slowly sinking Dodge, full of plants and character!
LES JENNINGS
4) Poly house news: The renewed poly house continues to be news-worthy, with all plots doing amazingly well. Crops such as cucumber and tomatoes are fruiting now, months ahead of their normal outdoor cycle. It's worth your while to have a look when you are passing by. However, I expect that the plastic house environment may prove too warm over summer. We may apply a coat of whitewash, as we have done in the past, to moderate the temperature.

More information can be requested by emailing [email protected] We look forward to receiving many entries!
Here is a great new project lead by a Margaret Griffith a member of Barwon Heads Sustainability Group.
The Barwon Estuary Project
What is the project? - Citizen scientists of Barwon Heads will create a Journal of the Barwon Estuary. Participants will record their observations of flora and fauna from the Barwon Heads bridge to lake Connewarre on the Museum Victoria website (www.bowerbird.org.au) or in a specially created individual nature diary. Recording methods can include data entry, photography, reflections, poetry, song, art.
In community workshops we'll refine our scientific and creative skills. A publishing group will be formed to select contributions and collate them in the Journal of the Barwon Estuary.
Who can participate? - Anyone interested in maintaining the beauty and ecological significance of the Barwon Estuary is most welcome. All ages. Groups, families and individuals. Local residents and visitors.
Can you contribute any of these skills? - Keen ears and sharp eyes, scientific knowledge, creative flair (literary, photographic and artistic), enthusiasm, willingness to learn, love of the Barwon Estuary, computer skills, flair for marketing, event management, ability to write funding submissions or to crowd source, editing and publishing skills.
Further Information or to join the group email Margaret Griffith from Barwon Heads Sustainability Group. Email: [email protected]

Songs of the South
The Sustainability Group is running a song competition for Festival of the Sea and is looking for great songs about this local area.Shortlisted entries will perform live, perhaps on the Saturday, before a judging panel that includes a music industry professional.
Barwon Heads/Ocean Grove do not have to be mentioned as such, but it should be clear in the lyrics that the song is about this area and has a connection to place.
The entry categories will be individuals and groups under 13 years of age, 13-18 years, and over 18. Entries are to be provided on a memory stick by February 29, 2016.

It’s that time again, when we catch up with old friends, swap stories and relax...we’ll enjoy a few get togethers with old friends then on christmas day our small immediate family of five will have a peaceful, shared vegetarian lunch somewhere scenic and quiet...we then troop off to hang out for a couple of hours with our nephew’s young family, 3, 5 and 8, fully wired and up since 5am! It’s delightful and we wouldn’t have it any other way...as always, we keep the food simple.
For snacks with friends, I’m opting for the healthy choices at left that we enjoyed recently at Jamie,s Ministry of Food 3 year birthday celebration in Geelong...lightly steamed carrots and asparagus and sliced radish with home made pesto; smoked salmon, beetroot & horseradish skewers garnished with thin curls of spring onion...so colourful and there was also delicious smashed broad bean and pea with pecorino on croutons (could be served on slices of cucumber for a GF option).
For our shared christmas lunch, my sister will make a vegan loaf with home made relish and hasselback potatoes and I'll make a garlicky roast vegetable salad, vegetables with pesto at left and the broad bean/pea smash as a dip piled on crispy spiced cauliflower fritters and my son makes a mean fatoush salad.
Jamie’s broad bean & pea smash recipe is below (from Jamie’s Italy-Penguin
2005) but you can always improvise, adding or including whatever you fancy...heat it up with a little finely minced fresh chilli but the best thing is, most of these can be prepared in advance G

good handfuls of freshly podded peas and broad beans until they look like mushy peas. Add a large handful of freshly grated pecorino or Parmesan, then loosen with a couple of good lugs of extra virgin olive oil and balance the flavours with a little lemon juice, salt and pepper. Smear this over each of your hot Crostini and finish with some grated pecorino or Parmesan and a little mint – genius!

TOWARDS WELLNESSGood friends contribute to your health & wellbeing
Spending time with friends is fun, but it may also yield a multitude of long-term physical and emotional benefits. Studies show that healthy relationships make aging more enjoyable, lessen grief, and provide camaraderie to help you reach personal goals, among other things. Maintaining positive relationships should rank up there with healthy eating and exercise as a necessary investment in your health.

It's been another busy month for the BHAC and we're looking forward to bringing Carmen to the Barwon Heads Community Hall together with Emotionworks Cut Opera on Saturday the 23rd of January 2016. It's a production that's been described as a “blues nightmare with a sexy mix of Latin, Salsa and Jazz”, so expect blood, sex, murder and intrigue. This is opera in its most essential form using a multitude of musical genres and vocal styles and featuring some great salsa dancing. Certainly no boring bits, and that's a promise! January 23rd is always a busy weekend in Barwon Heads so buy your tickets early now online at: www.trybooking.com/JKQFIn other news planning is well underway for the Bellarine Arts Trail Weekend to be held in Spring 2016 where Artist studios in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove will be open to the public. We're still calling for expressions of interest from local artists. Please call Karen Shirley 0437 032 647 or email us at [email protected] to register your interest. This event has been made possible through a City of Greater Geelong Community Arts Grant and promises to be wonderful way to gain insight into local artists' practice and their studios. We've also been lucky enough to be awarded funds to run a feasibility study so we'd like to hear from our community, and for you to firstly consider whether you support a permanent Community Arts Hub in Barwon Heads? Please email us at the above address with your thoughts. The feasibility study gets underway over summer and community consultation will take place January - March 2015. Your input will be absolutely crucial. rolling on the river...
Mindfulness is not allowing life to pass you by in a blur. It’s about not reaching the weekend or the end of the month (or year) and looking back and not being able to remember the highlights, the lowlights, or anything in between. It’s about remembering to be aware of the journey through life, even the little things. (Especially the little things!)
We've all become participants (victims?) of social media, experiencing both major and minor life events through the lens of a tablet/iPhone/Android in order to upload t h e p h o t o s / v i d e o s o n t o Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest.
If like me, you want to live a more mindful existence, but don’t want to have to change drastically in order to do that, here are 8 easy ways that you can incorporate mindfulness into your daily life.
1. Chew and taste your food - slowly 2. Breathe deeply, noisily and on purpose3. Stop, smell flowers - and look at them4. Don’t be afraid to say no gently & firmly5. Find a hobby - enjoy it often6. Hang out with gentle, kind people7. Meditate or play relaxing music - often8. Walk to the beat of your own drummer G
My clever sister has planted up orange, mayonnaise tubs with strawberries and hung them down the wall near her Yoga & Healing Centre in Colac...passers by will enjoy the fruits as they ripen...big herb pots are next.________________
More and more I find I’m choosing to spend time with people who are kind and generous.Helping others not only makes us feel good about ourselves; it can also increase our physical well-being.
The mind and body aren’t separate. Anything we do to elevate our spirits will also have a beneficial effect on our health. A recent study by Cornell University found that volunteering increases a person’s energy, sense of mastery over life, and self-esteem.
Other studies have demonstrated that such positive feelings can actually strengthen and enhance the immune system. Positive emotions increase the body’s number of T-cells, cells in the immune system that help the body resist disease and recover quickly from illness. Posi t ive emot ions a lso re lease endorphins into the bloodstream. Endorphins are the body’s natural tranquilizers and painkillers; they stimulate dilation of the blood vessels, which leads to a relaxed heart.
Kindness is learned early. Empathy and compassion are learned as children while we negotiate our way through kinder, primary and secondary school, taking us into adulthood.
Kindness brings a renewed faith in human nature, a sense of the sheer goodness which human beings are often capable of, which sometimes might seem difficult to see amidst the chaos and conflict of everyday life.
“Your greatness is measured by your kindness; your education and intellect by your modesty; your ignorance is betrayed by your suspicions and prejudices, and your real caliber is measured by the consideration and tolerance you have for others.” William J.H. Boetcker (1873-1962)

Thanks to Jamie’s Ministry of Food’s Lindy Mills for the invitation to their celebration of 3 years in GeelongThree years since opening the doors in Geelong, a new evaluation of Jamie Oliver’s home cooking skills program shows it is effective in achieving long term behaviour change relating to preparation and consumption of food.
Recent results from Deakin and Melbourne University’s research of Victorian participants show that Jamie’s Ministry of Food resulted in positive sustained impacts in participants cooking confidence; and healthy eating behaviours, including increased fruit and vegetable consumption and a decrease in the consumption of fast food.
Jamie Oliver said of the new research results, “I'm thrilled with the fantastic new research results, which have simply proved that by inspiring and educating people about food and how to cook it, we can help people be healthier and, ultimately, happier as a result. Students at our Ministry of Food kitchens in Australia are eating more veggies and fewer takeaways as a direct result of our course and that makes me unbelievably proud. This is the second time our brilliant Ministry of Food programme has shown to make people's lives better through good, fresh, nutritious food, which can only have a positive impact on how they choose to eat, cook and nourish themselves and their families.”
Jamie’s Ministry of Food Geelong has seen over 5000 participants through the doors with many and varied stories of change and positive health and life impact. The new research results show that Geelong’s residents are consuming an additional 2,500 cups of vegetables each day as a direct result of participation in the Jamie’s Ministry of Food course.More at www.jamiesministryoffood.com

IGA Proudly Supporting your local
CFA Volunteer Firefighters
Christmas is almost here, which means a
couple of sure things… Santa is putting the
final touches to all the presents ready for
delivery, our little town will soon buzz with all
the holiday makers and the weather will keep
getting hotter. The latter means greater fire
risks for people, properties and livestock.
The 2015 / 16 fire season was officially declared on
Monday 9 November, earlier than previous years based
on a number of factors measured by the Bureau of
Meteorology. At a practical level it means each Brigade
in the Bellarine is on a rotating roster to respond to
incidents both locally and beyond. On high fire risk
days we will know in advance who is available to turn
out and they will be able to move quickly to support
whatever the situation.
At a recent fire season briefing we were informed that
October on the Bellarine Peninsula had been the driest
on record, and that we are officially in an El Niño
weather pattern. While we've had some rain in
November, this will only aid grasses and shrubs to keep
growing, which then become additional fuel when hot
days dry out any moisture.
We also heard that dams in the region are very low so we know sourcing water will be a big challenge. On 6 December our Captain and Community Safety Officer will attend a tour of the Bellarine looking at strategic areas around to be aware of in case of a response over the coming fire season..
This update is not meant to alarm you, more to reassure you that as a Brigade we are trained and have procedures in place to ensure a swift response. We support other Brigades on the
Bellarine as they support us. As individuals there are things we can all do to keep ourselves and houses safe this summer, for more, visit www.cfa.org.au
We were thrilled with the turnout at our recent Open Day. The smiles and giggles of delight from all the children who came were wonderful. A big thanks to the parents who brought their children along and to the members who were there on the day and those who helped our Fire Station look its best.
Now back to Christmas and the jolly big man
in the red suit. The annual Christmas Eve
Santa lolly run will commence on you
guessed it Christmas Eve. The fire truck with
Santa and his helpers will appear at three
locations 5.40pm at the football oval in the
caravan park, 6pm at the boat ramp in River
Parade opposite Minah Street and 6.20pm at
the Skate Park off Sheepwash Road. There
will be signs in these areas so you know
where to be to meet Santa.
Barwon Heads Fire Brigade has a Facebook page

jump on and give us a like to follow what we are up to!

'Tis the season to be giving
No matter what your belief system may be the festive season is upon us. The summer solstice, the birth of a child in Palestine or the arrival of a prophet are all reasons to celebrate. These festivities all involve much highly anticipated gift giving.
For better or worse.
Badly thought- out gifts can quickly turn from excitement to disappointment. Those long-awaited consumer goods can quickly lose their appeal. Only the rubbish fairy is never disappointed by the humans who leave generous gifts of garbage. Please let me suggest that giving a thought for the natural world over our back fences would be helpful.
Elsewhere in our village by the sea you will find volunteers giving their time and patience for the enjoyment of others.
Volunteers like the Friends of the Lobster Pot who open the doors of the Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre for the enjoyment and enlightenment of visitors. That's the green building on the river front near 'At the Heads' restaurant. There you will gain an insight into the natural and social heritage of our river estuary. That means marvelling at the local marine life in our four salt water tanks. It also means washing hands and getting a hands- on experience in the touch tank. Otherwise the collection of photographs of the past may appeal to you. Give yourself and your nearest and dearest an informative holiday experience .It will be open 2.00-5.00p.m. daily from Boxing Day until Australia Day weekend and will only cost a gold coin donation. Readers who wish to give just a little of your time to this worthy cause would be welcome to join the friends group. Contact them through Barwon Coast. Call in at the office or phone Maddie Glynne (52541118). To the readers and all mankind we wish peace and goodwill. Rob Kuebler

WHAT'S COOKING AT THE LOBSTER POT?
The newly banded pair, CR & SN hatched two chicks at 31W on 18/11/15. Sadly at the time of writing, there is only one remaining.Further along 13th Beach at 40W, PC & EH hatched their first two chicks for the season on 21/11/15. These vulnerable chicks face many threats in the 35 days from hatching until they can fly. Aside from the ever present avian predators: magpies, ravens, gulls, kestrels and other raptors, these chicks are highly sensitive to disturbance from off-lead dogs.
When an off-lead dog is present, chicks will go into hiding which means they can't feed and may die of starvation or dehydration if they are disturbed for a long period of time or frequently disturbed throughout the day. When the chick's parents are preoccupied with fending off or distracting off-lead dogs the chicks are then vulnerable to avian attack. An unleashed dog is more likely to explore and to move unpredictably from the water to the upper beach, or even into the dunes, where they are likely to encounter the eggs or hiding chicks, and to accidentally step on and crush them.Believe it or not, the birds can tell the difference between a dog on or off the lead.Hooded plovers have been observed to be less reactive to leashed dogs; a dog on the lead is very close to its owner and moves at the same speed, in a predictable path.As a consequence disturbance is of a shorter duration and less likely to be lethal.
The stretch of beach between Breamlea in the West to 40W in the East is a "No dogs / No horses at any time" beach.Having this beach set aside for wildlife, allows not just the hooded plovers to thrive but also the migratory species which live here during our late Spring and Summer to build up their reserves for their return flight to the Northern Hemisphere.
Success for the hoodies depends on everyone. Please, if you are visiting any beach where hoodies are breeding, respect the signs at the breeding areas.Walk your dog elsewhere, but if that's impossible, keep them on a leash at all times and walk at the waters edge.Never walk at high tide as the nests are on the sand just above the high-water mark.
For more details, or to become involved in Hooded Plover monitoring, please contact Renee Mead at Birdlife Australia: [email protected]

Bee with a backpack… of the sensor variety John William McCarthy (Jack)
25 July 1915 to 23 November 2015
Reflections of a most Interesting Life
Jack came to Barwon Heads Primary School, as a relief Headmaster in the 50’s. He was a shy man, except in front of his students, where he excelled with teaching.
The students loved him, some of the teachers found him somewhat different. He was before his time with many things. He believed in equality for men and women and when it was different, he became disillusioned and frustrated. He retired too soon, in his 50’s, couldn’t bear how much the system was changing. He was in the Air Force during the 2nd world war and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, among other distinctions. He joined the army as a Private in the Korean War – ‘was that an eye opener!’ he would comment. His first cousin, Sir John Gorton was also a distinguished airman in the 2nd world war…ran in the family.
When he came to Barwon Heads he initially boarded with my family and eventually became part of our family. He and my Mum were together for many years and he was a constant source of learning for me – I can say I never found him boring. He had a wicked sense of humour and very quick witted.
When he left Barwon Heads he went to live in Maldon in a little miner’s cottage. He loved his own company and was a copious reader…..always had a
book or newspaper around him.
On July 25 this year, Jack celebrated his 100th Birthday. Quite an achievement. Jack lived on his own in Maldon and never asked for favours or help, so independent. It was still fun going to visit him in his little home, with all his knick knacks, medals and things he held dear.
On Monday 23rd November 15 Jack passed away, his heart had enough of this life. RIP old fella, love you and will miss our chats, you and Edna may enjoy a cuppa, no make that a beer or two. Margie x

Barwon Coast is a C o m m i t t e e o f Management appointed by the State Government with responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13thBeach. Our Committee members are local residents appointed with consideration of the skills and experience that they have to offer in the management of this important piece of coastline.
LIVING WITH OUR WILD LIFE – DOGS ON OUR BEACHESAs we approach summer, with its inevitable influx of visitors, it is timely to remember that dogs on the beach is not always a care free occurrence. Uncontrolled dogs rushing at people can be very scary for many people to the point some people avoid the beach; wildlife can be seriously impacted especially our beach nesting birds like the Hooded Plover. Dog excrement is never pleasant if not picked up by owners. Our dogs love the beach; however we must be mindful of other users and our wildlife inhabitants that have nowhere else to go; we urge all dog owners to be responsible for their pets.Barwon Coast has for many years worked closely
with the City of Greater Geelong to inform the community of the issues and regulations around responsible dog ownership; this will continue this year with COGG officers using a new 4WD vehicle providing greater access along our coast, enforcement of regulations will be of particular importance.
BARWON HEADS PROMENADE UPDATEIn late May this year sections of the Barwon Heads Seawall were damaged by storm events, revealing significant voids under the promenade; this resulted in about 200 metres of the promenade being closed due to concerns for public safety.Rebuilding of the seawall commenced on Monday 28th September and is progressing well, with over 70% of the wall rebuilt at the time of writing. In the interest of public safety, all visitors to the area are asked to take note of the site signage and only walk as directed.Particularly be advised that at times the riverbank beach maybe closed to limit risk to pedestrians.Barwon Coast is confident the rebuild of almost 200 lineal metres of the seawall and the promenade path can be completed prior to the summer season.
OCEAN GROVE MAIN BEACH – FORESHORE PROTECTION WORKS:Barwon Coast has commenced work on a dune protection system at Ocean Grove Main Beach. The asset that is used by Barwon Coast and importantly at
system using sand filled ‘geo-fabric’ containers will help protect the car park; main toilet block and the beach access ramp. The ramp is a vital asset that is used by Barwon Coast and importantly at this time of year by Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club.
BARWON HEADS CARAVAN PARK – HOWARD HARMER OVAL PRECINCT MASTER PLANBarwon Coast, in partnership with the Barwon Heads Football Netball Club, has commenced work on a Master Plan for the oval precinct to guide improvements over the next 5 to 10 years.
Consultants Thompson Berrill Landscape Design have been engaged by Barwon Coast to facilitate community engagement and the development of the plan.Preliminary consultation has been undertaken with the Club, Caravan Park, and members of the community. The draft Master Plan will be presented to the community on Tuesday 15th Dec 5 - 6.30pm at the Multi-Purpose Facility in the Barwon Heads Caravan Park. All are welcome. The community will have at least 6 weeks to comment on the plan.

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle all the way around Barwon Heads with loads of kids, flashing lights and fun. Our annual Eczema Party is happening at the end of Novemer so you can read all about it in the January edition.
The BHCC are also going to be teaming up with the Icebergers! We are all going to ride our bikes together from the CFA, around the levee bank, across the bridge and then to RAAFs beach for a swim. We have been told to ‘bring our budgie smugglers’ and they have been told to bring their lycra. Also read about this one in the next edition.
B2B – Bridge to Bridge
The BHCC riders have all been training hard. Our average speed has gone up and the number of riders each morning continues to climb. As well as riding each weekday morning, we have included a longer Saturday morning ride followed by breaky. It’s only four months until the big ride from Sydney to Barwon Heads actually happens. About 1100 km in eight days – averaging around 150 km per day. It’s great to see local businesses getting behind the B2B ride and supporting us in our fundraising efforts for Give Where You Live, the charity we are riding for. A big thanks to Barwon Heads Community Bank, Open2View, Café Maritana, Annie's Provedore and Max Action all offering support in many different ways. If your business would like to assist, please talk to any of the BHCC crew.

BARWON HEADSBOWLING CLUB
As we wonder where has the year gone, the pennant bowls has gone the same way. Into December and half the season is behind us, and selectors are still trying to work out who should be where.
Selectors- the most misunderstood group in any Club or organization where selection must be made. A friend from footy days who became a selector at a very big club with 12 teams suggested it was more difficult than anything he ever saw in footy.
Players- we are all positive we are better than we really are.Enough of that rubbish, pennant teams are doing O.K. and expectations are mostly being met.Our car trader bowlers’ story only gets better, cannot be told yet.
With Christmas closing in we must mention Crackerjack- Barefoot Bowls happening all through January on Wednesday and Friday nights from 6-8 pm.Anyone with the slightest fancy for trying themselves out is welcome. Or maybe you just fancy a couple of drinks and a laugh. You can rock up, or to be safe book with Ian on 0413 840 106.As we head toward Christmas we take the opportunity to wish everyone a merry Christmas and safe and happy new year.Until next time good bowling.
Sandra Green receives a chequefrom sponsor, Entertainment Books.
We are gearing up for the fundraiser and
launch on Monday 7th December at Annie's
Provedore with Gerard Whateley and Ian
Cover.
Gerard and Ian will be talking and answering
questions on all things sport.
Bill Mithen, the CEO from Give Where You
Live will also be in attendance. This should
be a terrific evening.
Bicycle Network SurveysOn Sunday 8th November, the BHCC collected cycling data for Bicycle Network. There were two collection points; one on the Breamlea bike path and the other on the bike path between the bridge and The Dunes. Apart from counting bikes, walkers, runners and dogs, there were some unusual vehicles in the 'other' category. On the Breamlea Bike path were a couple of motorbikes; one pacing some cyclists and another taking a short-cut. Near the dunes, a couple of electric scooters were counted as well as plenty of prams.
That's it for December.
Have a wonderful summer break and stay safe. There will be a lot of traffic around over the next couple of months, so please to be patient if you are caught behind a cyclist. Some of us aren't trying to go slow, we just are.Happy cycling, Andy McNeilly

Heritage Wine Walk thSaturday February 13 2016
All the money raised will go to The APCO foundation
The Foundation has been heavily involved in the past year with
Cottage by the Sea a wonderful group that take children from challenging backgrounds away
for a holiday and Cops n kids who give 4-8 year olds with cancer an amazing weekend away every year to give their families some respite.
Every Apco also donate to their local community and are involved with many causes all over Geelong and Victoria.
The Heritage Wine Walk will become enormous in years to come so hop on this inaugural event.
The day will start at 11 and finish at 5 pm ( Set up time will be from 9 am and pack up by 6 p.m) There will be 7 venues with 2 wineries at each venue
People are given a map of the venue locations and meander from one heritage site to the next. They will have the opportunity to sample local wines and some canapes at each site. Each person will be given a pack which will include a polycarbonate wine glass, a booklet that has vouchers for each winery so they can sample the wine. The book will also include a voucher for a canape at each venue. Each person will also have a wrist band. At each venue there will be 2 wineries where they sample one from each winery. The wineries will provide the liquor licences required for the day. Our demographic on day will be the 30 years old with two incomes and also an older demographic will include the baby boomers generation to a certain degree. Ticket will be $100 plus so it will exclude a younger crowd.
There will be 2 people from the foundation at every venue.

Barwon Heads Cricket Clubwin from 6 games. In juniors the Under 17s have won 3 and lost 2 and sit second on the ladder, the Under 15s have also won 3 of their 5 games and are just outside the top 4 while Under 13 Goddard have 3 wins from 5 games and Under 13 Hyland are still to register a match win. If you say it fast it doesn’t seem like a lot, but it is a lot of cricket.
Socially the club continues to do well and with the reintroduction of the small oval after a year off for refurbishment there are a few more people around so the vibe in the rooms on a Saturday afternoon is excellent. Trish behind the bar has gone to some trouble to introduce salad rolls and hot dogs so there’s some tucker available in the rooms with the chilled refreshments.
The silly season is almost with us and the club has our usual visit from the chap in the red suit planned for the evening of the last Saturday of the
cricket year which is December 19th. It’s a definite tick in the social calendar and you shouldn’t miss it. The kids are of course welcome so come on down for a visit. It won’t be long before the trip across the bridge is a long and tiring odyssey of endurance as we wind our way with the countless visitors (all of them welcome) to destinations we normally arrive at within 10 minutes, so getting together on a piece of turf within the “village limits” of the town might be a nice change.
If we don’t see you there to tell you in person, the Barwon Heads Cricket Club would like to wish all of the good folks (and the bad – even the cyclists) of the town the happiest and safest Christmas. We hope that the trips from home to Geelong and the Grove don’t take you too long with all the visitors on the road and that the weather is fine and not too hot for the Christmas turkey. We’ll chat again in the new year.More next month, Matt Dunell
December is a busy month.
There’s all of the Christmas shopping to get done, all of the parties to attend (or tactfully avoid) and there’s a fair bit of cricket too, and at this point of the season it’s important cricket. The couple of games that get played in December will provide much needed points for teams wishing to get into finals. By now class and form have started to show. Those who are going to influence the outcome of the season have started to exert their influence on the competition and stars of the season are beginning to come to the fore. With some of the stuff going on in the news though it’s a nice distraction to immerse one’s self in the game for a few hours every week and enjoy the company of your mates.
All teams are well into the season now with some mixed results. A Grade have won 2 and lost 2, B Grade have won all 4 games, C Grade have won 1 and lost 3 while D Grade have still got to register a
MIDWEEK LADIES VICTORY!We had two midweek ladies teams competing in grand
rdfinals on the 23 November: Section 2 and Section 7 and they were both victorious!!It was a tight finish by Section 2 who won the last set on a tie breaker to claim victory by one game overall. Well done Melissa Dallinger, Tracie Roderick, Fran Rowlands, Andi Robertson and Claire Heatlie! The girls will now be promoted to section one and it has been a very long time since we fielded a team in the top section. In Section 7, Sally Fahey led her team of Mandy Hughes, Tania White and Kate Scott, and Ros Claringbold to victory against Highton at Clifton Springs courts. The first 2 sets were breathtakingly even, but in the next four sets Barwon Heads got into
a great rhythm and went on to win 5 sets to one. To join our midweek competition starting in Feb 2016 and have fun while getting fit phone Maz on 0409405044
Junior TennisWe are now at the halfway mark, with our 11 teams having now played 7 matches.
Section 14 girls are second on the ladder, just trailing Grovedale. Section 18 girls have come close by scoring two draws recently back to back. Our two girls teams in section 20 are doing a great job as beginner teams. Good luck for the second half of the season. Go Girls!Section 5 boys are holding on firmly to third position, Geelong Lawn were too good recently and are on top of the ladder.Section 8 boys are on top by
percentage and are looking good.Section 15 boys and section 22 boys are both just out of the four so need a strong finish to be finals contenders.Section 19 and 21 boys are both doing great and are in third and second position respectively. It will be a busy finals season all round. ?The two section 22 boys teams: blue and white are our beginner teams and are improving every week. It's great to see the courts a buzz on Saturday mornings with all the junior teams. We especially would like to thank all the team managers and parent helpers who contribute every week and our tireless junior co-ordinator, Dave Brauer.
Senior TennisOur four teams in the Saturday senior competition are all in strong sections and despite the lack of wins are still enjoying the challenge on sunny Saturday afternoons. If you are interested in Saturday senior tennis call Melissa on 0448058254
