May Resident of the Month: Bob Rock

Robert Alan Rock was born to Daniel and Lillian Rock on January 21, 1919 at a

women’s hospital in New York. From a young age, Bob showed an interest in

reading and exhibited a strong ability for drawing. By fifth grade, Bob’s books

were full of his original sketches. Around the same time, Bob won a citywide

fifth grade essay contest, which was very important to him. Years later, Bob

took a competitive exam and was accepted into Townsend Harris, a three-year

high school that gave students an automatic entrance to New York University.

During his time as a student at Townsend, Bob also held two part time jobs.

After graduation, he was hired by Terrytoons; an animation studio that was a part of the early days of

Disney. Soon after starting at Terrytoons, Bob joined the infantry in the U.S. military and went on to

have many accomplishments during his time of service. During these years, Bob also worked for

Paramount Pictures. One of his favorite experiences was being able to greet and protect Albert

Einstein.

Bob married his first wife, Janet Michaels, in 1942. Together, they had a son in 1947 and named him

Andrew Rock. Due to their young age, Janet and Bob’s marriage began to dissolve and they decided to

divorce. Around this time, Bob’s career transitioned to the advertising industry where he was able to

utilize his artistic strengths.

After some time had passed, Bob went to a friend’s house where he met a new friend that he liked very

much. Her name was Maisie Price. With a little advice from Bob’s mom, Bob married Maisie. They then

moved to South Africa together. They lived in South Africa for 35 years where Bob worked on an

assignment in Rhodesia for J. Walter Thompson, Dean of Agencies. He had two sons with Maisie,

Michael and Jeremy. Bob and Maisie purchased land and Bob built their home with his own hands. He

built a pool and a tennis court for his kids, where he enjoyed watching them play tennis as often as

possible.

One of Bob’s biggest accomplishments was helping to save a failing school through the use of his

marketing and advertising expertise. That same school is now a University and has named the library

after Bob. Bob has been living in The Towers for eight years and his favorite part of living here is the

conversations that go on during dinnertime. Bob has had to overcome many obstacles in his life, but

continues to move forward with a positive attitude!

Page 7: Tall Tower Tales - Towers at Laguna Woods Villagetowersatlagunawoodsvillage.com/new/wp-content/uploads/... · 2016-05-31 · 2nd Neil Diorio– Lynn Austin 2nd Elinor Scott ... John

WHEREAS, use and haphazard parking of these devices can lead to ingress and egress problems in Lortscher Hall and the dining rooms, which affects all Towers’ residents’ enjoyment of these facilities; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, June 16, 2016, that the Board of Directors of this Corporation hereby approves the following seating rules for both Lortscher Hall and the Dining Rooms;

1. During events in Lortscher Hall where there is “theatre-style” seating (musical performances, movies, shows), seating for residents who need to bring their walker, wheelchair, or scooter into the room with them are allowed to sit on the right half of the room, in either the front row, the seats on the right side of the room, and in the back row of the right side. Walkers and other devices may be parked in front of residents in the front row, to the right of residents on the right side, or behind residents in the back row. Staff at larger events will direct residents to this seating.

2. Residents with no ambulatory devices are allowed to sit anywhere else in the room, but to save these previously mentioned seats for residents and their devices.

3. Residents who use these devices for convenience, but can park them outside Lortscher Hall themselves may sit anywhere else in the room.

4. Residents will follow the seating direction of Staff in being seated prior to a performance.

5. When dining in both the California and Crystal Dining Rooms, residents are not allowed to keep their devices with them at their table (especially walkers) and must allow food service personnel to keep the walkways between tables clear for residents and servers to move throughout the dining room. Walkers and large scooters will be stored by food service personnel directly outside the dining rooms.

6. If food service personnel moved a residents’ mobility device outside the dining room, resident should notify the personnel in a timely manner that they would like the device returned. There may be short wait.

7. Failure to follow direction of Staff at events in Lortscher Hall or to follow the direction of food service personnel in the dining rooms could lead to fines, legal fees, and ultimately loss of membership in the association.

8. Blocking ingress and egress of fellow residents at unstaffed events could lead to fines, legal fees, and ultimately loss of membership in the association.

RESOLVED FURTHER, that the officers and agents of this Corporation are hereby authorized on behalf of the Corporation to carry out the purpose of this resolution.
