We’reallfamiliarwiththehandfulofstatesthatconsistentlycomeoutontopwhenitcomestorankingthosebestforbusiness .Whetheritistaxation,workforcequality,orapro-businessattitude,certainstatescontinuallystandoutaboveothers .

However,foranybusinesslookingtolaunch,relocate,orexpandintoanewarea,knowingwhichstateshavewonaccoladesisonlyastartingpoint .Everycompanyneedstodoitshomeworktodeterminethebeststateandtheidealcommunityforitsbusiness .ThisentailstakingacloselookattheoperatingactivityandtheneedsofthecompanyandanalyzingkeycostsindifferentareasoftheUnitedStates .

Theprocessincludesassessingamultitudeoffactors,frominfrastructureandlaborneedstotaxscenariosandtransportationandshipping/logisticscosts—eachfactorplaysacriticalroleindeterminingwheretobaseoperations .

AvoidKnee-JerkReactions

Acompanyshouldnotbetooquicktolocateinitshomestateormakeaknee-jerkreactionbasedonothers’rankings .Oftenmanyofthelistsofso-called“beststatesforbusiness”relyonlimitedcriteriatodeterminerankings;acompanyneedstotakeamoreholisticapproachtofindthebeststatetomeetitsneedsandcost-reductionobjectives .

Forinstance,astatethatisrecognizedforlowertaxesmaystillprovecost-prohibitivefortheaveragecompanybecauseofhighpropertycostsorthecostofqualifiedlabor—thebiggestexpenseformostcompanies .Itallcomesdowntoanalyzingthebusiness’operatingmodelandassessingthefullspectrumofkeycostsindifferentareasofthenation .

Ofcourse,findingthebestplacetolocateabusinessgoesastepfurtherthanlookingatstate-levelattributes;acompanyneedstofindtheidealcommunitythatwillsupportthegrowthofitsbusiness .Thesiteselectionprocessmaystartbylookingatwhichstateshave“thebest”businessclimates,butthedecision-makingprocessisfurthernarrowedtoconsiderhowaparticularcommunitymeetsthecriticalneedsofthebusiness .Let’s

Themanufacturerofoil-freecompressorswantedalocationthatwouldbeclosertothemarketsitservesandallowittooperateinthemostcost-effectiveandefficientmanneraspossible .Thecompanyalsosoughtcloseaccesstohigh-techresources(vendors,etc .)andanongoingsourceofhighlyqualifiedemployees .OnceFloridawasonthetableasanoptionforDanfoss,thesearchprocesscontinuedtofindtheidealcommunitythatwouldbestservethecriticalneedsofthecompany .

TallahasseeCommunityCollegehasreceiveda$200,000grantfromtheU .S .DepartmentofEducationtopurchaseequipmenttoenhancescience,technology,engineeringandmathematics(STEM)instruction .

“Thisgenerousawardwillhaveastrong,positiveimpactontheeducationofstudents,andwillstrengthentheinstructionalcapacityofourclassroomsandlaboratories,”saidFrankBrown,deanofscienceandmathematicsatTCCandactingvicepresidentforacademicaffairs,inmakingtheannouncement .

Thefundswillusedatthecollege’sSTEMCenter,anintegratedlearningfacilitythatprovidesresourcestoimprovestudents’success .TCCsaidtherewillbepurchasesofequipmenttosupportlearning,groupstudy,workshop,seminar,technologyandmulti-mediaactivities .

Otherplannedpurchasesincludeequipmentforastronomy,chemistrylaboratory,biology,microbiologyandorganicchemistrylaboratorycourses .

TCC Narrows Presidential Search to FiveTallahassee Community College has released the names of the final five individuals in the running for its vacant presidential post.Reporter: TCC Press Release

Tallahassee,FL-TallahasseeCommunityCollegehasreleasedthenamesofthefinalfiveindividualsintherunningforitsvacantpresidentialpost .

TheCollege’sPresidentialSearchCommitteenarrowedthelistofcandidatesfromtentofiveduringameetingonMondayafternoon .Laterthatafternoon,TCC’sDistrictBoardofTrusteesapprovedthelistatitsmonthlyboardmeeting .

EachofthefinalistswillspendtwodaysonTCC’scampus,meetingwithboardmembers,students,faculty,staffandcommunitymembers .

Eachcandidatewillgothroughatwo-dayinterviewingprocess .TheywillspendtimewithdifferentgroupsofstakeholdersatTCC .Then,thefinalinterviewwillbewithTCCtrustees .Eachtrusteewillget10minutestoask

questionsofeachcandidate .

Trusteesweregiventherecommendationoffinalistsbythepresidentialsearchcommittee,whohasbeenmeetingsinceAugustaboutthecandidates .Mondaywasitslastmeetingpriortothetrustees’vote .Thecommitteenarrowedthelistdownfrom59to27,thento10andfinallytofive .Searchcommitteemembers,whoholddifferentjobsthroughoutthecommunity,saidtheywerepleasedwiththeoverallprocess .

The13committeememberswhovotedMondayviewedthevideosofeachofthe10semifinalistsbeforenarrowingthecandidates’listtofive .Murdaughsatintheboardroomastrusteesapprovedthesearchcommittee’srecommendations .Henoddedandsmiledwhenhisnamewasannouncedduringthemeeting .

TALLAHASSEE,Fla .(September14,2010)—A$34,037granthasbeenawardedtoTallahasseeCommunityCollegebytheFloridaDepartmentofEducation’sDivisionofVocationalRehabilitationtoprovidetherapeuticrecreationandactiveleisureactivitiesforadultswithdisabilitiesinLeon,GadsdenandWakullacounties .

TheprojectwillbeimplementedthroughTCCbythenonprofitFloridaDisabledOutdoorsAssociation(FDOA) .FundingismadepossiblebyanappropriationfromtheFloridaLegislature .

Theprogram’sgoalsaretoimprovestaminaandmusclestrength,reduceanxietyanddepression,promotegeneralfeelingsofwell-beingandencourageparticipationinthecommunity .

TheprojectisthelatestinalonghistoryofcollaborativeeffortsbetweenTCCandFDOA,whichwasfoundedin1990byDavidJones,aTCCgraduatewhohadbeenseverelyinjuredinahuntingaccident .Afterextensiverehabilitation,Jonesestablishedtheassociationanditsannualevent,SportsAbility—heldatTCC,OchlockoneeRiverStateParkandMiracleFieldatMesserPark—toprovideotherswithaccesstotherecreationalopportunitiesthathecreditswithhelpinghimregainhisplaceinsociety .

“IcamebackhometomyTCCfamilytoseeifwecouldgoforwardtogethertoprovideactiverecreationactivitiesforpeoplewithdisabilities,”Jonessaid .

Activerecreationandleisureactivitieshelppeoplewithdisabilitiesentertheworkforcebypromotingwellness,increasingstaminaandreducingsecondaryhealthconditions .Forinstance,apersonwithdiabetesmaywellavoidtheamputationofalimbthroughtherapeuticrecreation .Bythesametoken,theprogramenhancesmentalandemotionalwellnessandpromotessocialinvolvement .

Themeetingbeganwiththeintroductionofboardmembersanddistinguishedguests .AmongtheguestwastrusteeandFAMUSGAPresidentGallopFranklin .FranklinwasrecentlynamedpartofthesixthclassoftheGubernatorialFellowProgrambyFloridaGov .CharlieCrist .

Franklinnotedthatthemeetingwouldbeoneofutmostimportance .

August10,theAMTC’sgrandopeningwasheldwithaone-of-a-kindribboncuttinginvolvingablowtorchandalengthofmetalchain .OnSeptember15,theAMTChostedtheTalTechAlliance’sInformationTechnologyRoundtableLuncheon—agatheringthatgeneratedarousingdiscussionofTallahassee’smanufacturingindustry .YetthebeginningofclassesonAugust25wasthemostexcitingdevelopmentofallandrepresentsthefruitionofanideamorethanayearinthemaking .ThehissofaCNClathe,thehumofa4-axisminimillandthesatisfactionofajobwelldoneallgohand-in-handattheAMTC .

Breitenfeldnotedthattheaveragesalaryforthatworkforceis$78,000andtotaldefensespendingis$6 .1billionintheregion,whichmultipliesthroughouttheeconomytohavea$15 .5billionimpactannually .

Bythen,hehadeveryone’sattention .Partoftheappealisthefacilitiesthemselves .EglinAirForceBase,at744squaremiles,isbiggerthanthestateofRhodeIsland,

Withthemilitarycomesthehundredsofcontractors,vendorsandsupportfirmsattractedbyopportunitieshere .TheyknowthatFloridaisseriousaboutsupportingtheirindustry .

“ThereisnobodythatdoesdefensebetterthanFlorida,”saidBreitenfeld,whohasworkedineconomicdevelopmentfor35years .“That’sabigreasonwhysomanydefensecontractorsareinFlorida .”

Sadly,wearelosingoneofourfirms,ElbitSystemsofAmerica,intheweeksaheadandlocalofficialsareworkingtohelpthoseamongthe192employeeswhoneedtotransitiontonewjobs .Despitethatsetback,otherdefensecontractorsareconfidentabouttheirbusinessprospects .

Andtheyhavetheireyeonthescientificstudies,theresearchandthedevelopmentworkinTallahasseeinsuchareasaspowersystems,propulsiontechnologyandhigh-performancematerialsdevelopmentatFloridaStateUniversity .
