Dear Parents and Carers,

We are now almost half way through term 4 and teachers have been busy writing end of year reports, planning celebrations for our Year 12 graduating students, Year 6 students moving into our high school programs and of course our celebration of achievement and success – our presentation day. Along with this, great learning continues every day in every classroom – our school is a hive of activity!

Metropolitan Athletics Carnival

A big congratulations to all our students who represented our school at the Combined Metropolitan Athletics Carnival at Homebush last Friday. Tallowood School came third place in the march past and many of our students received places in individual events throughout the day. You can check out some photos from the day in this newsletter.

Epilepsy Awareness

“Epilepsy is the world’s most common serious brain disorder. It is more prevalent than Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy combined. It can affect anyone at any time”.

“Right now about 250,000 children, young people and adults are living with epilepsy [in Australia]”. Epilepsy Action Australia

On Thursday next week we will be holding a mufti day to raise awareness of Epilepsy. Students are invited to wear something purple, the official colour of Epilepsy awareness.

Values at Tallowood

Earlier in the year our staff began the journey of developing a consistent set of values for our school. This has been a long journey to really drill down and develop some core values statements that we believe represent Tallowood School and that our whole community can support and exemplify. Consultation with parents at our recent information session was very positive and our values have now been finalised and are displayed in our school foyer. They are also included below. Please take some time to read and understand our values statements and use the key language of these values when talking with your child.

LIBRARYWelcome to the library for Term 4. During our lessons this term Junior and Primary students have been covering the theme of “Stories from Africa”. We read African Big Books, listened to African music, played African musical instruments, learnt all about African animals and did lots of communication and literacy activities.

We aim to make our lesson engaging, enjoyable and educational as well. The theme books we have been focusing on are the classic stories by Eileen Browne, ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and ‘Handa’s Hen’.

High school students have been covering the theme of “Growing and Changing - Adolescence and Puberty”. These lessons teach important information that everybody needs to know and I am proud of the way our students respond and engage with such important information, resources and activities. It is a privilege to watch our Year 7 to 12 students developing and growing into respectful young members of our Tallowood school community.

Class 1

We are back to school with a bang! Term 4 is all about learning about ourselves. We are enjoying reading big books explaining our body parts, life cycle and how everybody is different. We have been busy in creating self-portraits, measuring how tall we are and how different we look to each other in class 1. We are growing plants in our classroom from the Woolworths growing pods to relate it to our unit of work this term.

On hot days, we have been trying to beat the heat by water play and eating icy poles. We try to stay indoors and drink plenty of water to keep ourselves hydrated.

Class 3Class 3 have been enjoying the swimming pool playing water games and learning to duck dive. We have been working on jumping into the pool and swimming to the edge by ourselves, floating on our backs unaided and kicking with our legs straight.

Some of the students in Class 3 have thoroughly enjoyed riding horses at RDA, they have made friends with Apache, Karoo and L.J. They have learnt tasks such as matching colours, posting items as well as balancing, mounting and dismounting their horse. They also practise using a quiet voice while riding.

Class 5Class 5 has been looking at chemical changes as part of our Science unit. We have cleaned coins using Coke, enjoyed watching colours move using milk and dishwashing liquid and investigated the different pigments in textas.

We look forward to more exciting experiments in the next few weeks.

CLASS 7

With the return of the warmer weather this term, Bianca, Bailey, Therese, Benjamin, Dan and Taharaat have enjoyed spending time in the garden. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful display of sweet pea flowers which not only smelt and looked good but also provided a fabulous photo opportunity! We have also been venturing inside the chicken coop to collect eggs, feed the chickens and, if we are lucky, to have a pat.

Switch and sensory activities are another favoured activity. We have enjoyed feeling the different textures of some messy sensory play, including, shaving cream and Goop. We have also been practising eye gaze with bright lights and using our hands (or heads) to activate a variety of different switches and switch activated toys.
