residents raised their voices over what they allege is ‘intimidation’ by window washers at intersections in the area, at the recent meeting of the bedfordview Community policing Forum (bCpF).“They come up to your window and proceed to wash your windows

without your consent and if you don’t comply, they swear to intimidate you,” said a resident. “We need to put them in their place through strengthening by-law policing efforts in the area.”He said he had seen a metro police vehicle pull up on a pavement by the intersection before and witnessed the window washers scatter from their posts. “I call on the ward councillors, EMPD and SAPS to stand together against this crime. Visible policing will help alleviate the problem,” he suggested. His concerns clearly hit a raw nerve in the audience, with residents responding with equal passion and concern. Many were of the opinion the situation at numerous intersections had gotten out of hand, naming intersections in the Greenstone and Bruma areas the most problematic. EMPD representative Superintendant Grant Glenn was present at the meeting to address concerns, saying metro police were aware of the problem. He said the Bruma intersections, which seemed to have stirred the most debate at the meeting, fell under the jurisdiction of the Johannesburg Metro Policing Department but that the EMPD would continue to monitor local intersections.

He encouraged the public not to support beggars or window washers at these intersections, as withdrawing support would encourage them to find another avenue to get income.

with the new telephone system for bed-fordview police sector vehicles in place, the bedfordview Community policing Fo-rum (bCpF) will assist bedfordview po-lice in training staff on telephone skills to improve the reaction times of officers and telephone communication skills. This according to Gavin Henry, chairperson for the BCPF who said following surveys on calls made by the public to the sector vehi-

cles, roughly 20 percent of these calls re-mained unanswered. He said the new telephone system had been implemented to eradicate problems result-ing from unanswered calls. “If the call isn’t answered within a specific time period, it is relayed to the next vehicle, and so forth – eventually being relayed to the station commander himself. This strengthens ac-countability in the force and helps build trust

between the public and police force.”

The bedford-view tame TimeS has a new mas-cot, pawl. you might have no-ticed the friendly green tiger who now features regularly in the tame KiDS series, The Adventures of ro-sie and her Tame Tiger (see Tametimes.co.za/learning-to-roar/ ). pawl was creat-ed for the community’s kids and named by the community, with Allison Savioli winning for her name suggestion in the recent name the Tame Tiger competi-tion. we liked ‘pawl’ because it is simple but still perfectly suited for a tiger. Pawl was last seen at Aussie - the Austral-ian Circus Spectacular, at the Carnival City over the weekend, which he visited togeth-er with Shirley Delagey and her family (see photo), winner of last week’s competition. They were equally impressed by the highly-professional, seamless performance, which incorporated all the elements of a tradition-al circus– acrobats, clowns, jugglers – but with a contemporary twist. Pawl was secretly relieved there were no clowns with bright red noses and curly or-ange hair – he’s a little scared of those. The circus’ clowns wore costumes with a mod-ern edge, but were nonetheless just as hi-larious as their red-nosed counterparts. One of the highlights of the show was a dancing couple whose main act included different dance styles within a single se-quence. Their dance steps – and outfits – changed with each shift in the music. Each time the music changed, the male dancer would move a cylindrical material ring over the female dancer and her outfit would change to a new colour and design within a few seconds – how, only they know. Pawl wondered whether he would be able to per-form a similar trick, changing from stripes to spots within a few seconds, but after some failed attempts gave up trying. He decided maybe juggling was better suited to him but got his paws all tied up trying to mimic the circus’ star juggler. This phenomenal juggler managed to walk on stilts, bounce a ball on a platform connected to a pole (balanced on his forehead) and juggle five skittles at the same time. There was also a hula hoop phenomenon who twirled what looked like hundreds of luminous hula hoops around her legs, arms and tiny waist, and breath-taking, airborne motorbike stunts. Why not invite Pawl to visit your event or establishment? Send an email to me at [email protected].

DA Mayoral Candidate Ghaleb Cachalia visited the Belgravia Bowling Club in Bedfordview on Tuesday last week as part of his Listening Tour, aimed at meeting with each community within

Ekurhuleni to hear and address their unique concerns.

He told the tame TIMES he had been moved by the communities he had visited – the residents of which continued to persevere despite having no water or electricity, in some instances. “Each area has its own face,” he said, explaining visiting Bedfordview was a decision made to better understand the unique heart of the upmarket Ekurhuleni community. It would seem his visit was met with great anticipation as the hall at the bowling club was filled to capacity on the

evening. Also, on his arrival he was greeted with a round of applause from guests who had gathered to meet him. Paul Vieira from Cake Extreme baked a world-class cake for the mayoral candidate, to celebrate his presence in Bedfordview.

“People don’t want someone standing inaccessible on a podium, speaking down to them,” said Cachalia. “They want leaders who understand their unique life situations, who communicate directly with them.” He said following the tour, for which he had been visiting four to five venues each day, he would be putting together a manifesto, summarising the information given in each area, so that each community’s needs could be addressed.

Station commander addresses community

Following the recent clean-up of the Bedfordview Post Office, Ward 20 councillor Jill Humphreys has called for the community to stand together in the cleaning up and restoration of Bedfordview’s parks.“My next project and one very close to my heart, is to see the bike park, opposite the post office, cleaned up and restored. Many of us have lived in the area for many years and our children have grown up in Bedfordview.

We have memories of taking our kids to visit the park and I would love to see this area restored so that children can continue to use this facility. It is a landmark site and part of the area’s heritage,” she said. She also said she wanted to organise a clean-up and restoration of the park at the corner of Kirkby and Leicester roads. Residents who can assist in any way, or who want more information, can contact Clr Humphreys on 082 450 0128.

EWN reports say former Bafana Bafana coach Ted Dumitru has sadly passed away after collapsing at the Eastgate Shopping Centre on Thursday last week. Nomzamo Radebe, CEO of JHI Retail, said that Eastgate Centre

Management had confirmed the death of the well-known former coach, allegedly due to medical reasons, in Woolworths at the centre. “On-site medical services attended to the customer, but unfortunately they could not resuscitate him.”

Speaking at his first meeting of the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) as the Bedfordview police’s new station commander on Tuesday last

week, Colonel Matlala encouraged the community to step up to the challenge and support police in their policing initiatives. He highlighted various crimes that had been a concern in the area over the past month, among these follow-home crimes from malls in the area and robberies with firearms at the Van Buuren Road on-and off-ramps.He said there had also been numerous hijackings and gave as an example, the recent hijacking of a truck in

Elandsfontein. He said residents taking basic safety precautions, like

wearing flashy jewellery when shopping, and remaining alert at all times, for

e x a m p l e , when driving home from an ATM,

would help police in their efforts in policing the area.DETERMINED: Bedfordview police’s new station commander Colonel Matlala.

My niece Portia (not her real name) became pregnant prior to marriage. I always dreamt and imagined myself ushering her down the aisle for me to hand her over to the young man she’d be getting married to. She is my one and only niece, hence her pregnancy shook me. I was disheartened by this, truly disturbed, even to a point of avoiding her at all costs. Though, the real blow was fi nding out that my own daughter Riana (an alias), was expectant too. Besides being angry I was also disappointed. But what amazed me was, unlike in my niece’s case, this anger of mine towards my daughter was different. I felt a deep sense of compassion for her. I wished I could do something to protect her and the unborn child, sometimes calling her, just to ask her to assure me that she wouldn’t, for instance, lift up heavy objects. That’s when it suddenly hit me that on the one hand, I was harsh to Portia (in fact, unforgiving towards her pregnancy), and on the other hand, I had compassionate towards Riana’s pregnancy. Wow! Love! It gave me no option. Its depth and immensity, involuntarily so, forced compassion to surface from some deep place inside of my being. This love asked no questions, but instead changed my judgement seat instantly for a mercy seat. The two girls were equally wrong, but my verdict was different. Actually Portia’s wrong exposed and revealed how little I really cared for her.I realised that the greater the love, the more lenient the judgement meaning, if you love more, it compels you to overlook the sin or wrong doing. Friends could it be, if we always remember someone else’s wrong doing, it’s perhaps because we love them less? Or could it be, that those without blemish in your circles are the most loved by ourselves? And probably the multitude of their sins, is covered under the blanket of our love. It was after this experience that I understood the psalmist when he said: “He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him.” (Psalm 103 vs 9-11: NIV).God’s love is amazing! It was at that moment that I began to “… grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ is, and to know this love that surpasses all knowledge,” (Ephesians 3 vs 18-19). God’s love leaves me in awe! It pushed me back to my niece. On my knees I stood before her: “Portia will you please fi nd it in your heart to forgive me, for having been so mean to you, during your pregnancy?” I then took her to town, asked her to choose whatever she wanted for her beautiful baby, my granddaughter, expressing my unconditional love for her.I was stricken by the revelation of the underserved love of God for us, a God who does not keep a record of our wrongs. I want you to know that you are loved. Thinking of my wrongs, my mind is still not able to fathom the greatness of the love of God. God loves you! Know it and internalise it and you shall prevail!

A woman recently approached the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BPCF), offering to open up her home to a prayer group previously discussed at a BCPF meeting. Gavin Henry, chairperson of the BCPF, spoke of the woman and her concerns at Tuesday’s meeting at the Belgravia Bowling Club in Bedfordview. Her response comes after the prayer group in question was brought into the spotlight at the policing meeting, attended by the EMPD, local officials, SAPS and community. The group, together with other prayer groups, have been using the Gillooly’s koppie in Bedfordview as a venue for prayer and have raised mixed responses from the public. Their

‘noisy activity’ from around 9pm on Saturday evenings to around 5am on the Sunday mornings has been criticised by officials and residents. This alleged noise disturbance was raised at previous meetings

where EMPD officials agreed to patrol the mountain area, to keep noise levels down.Gavin Henry, BCPF chairperson, said he had been criticised following these meetings where the issue had been raised. “I am really not against prayer, in fact I encourage it. But this activity doesn’t involve people quietly going to the mountain to pray. In these instances, they shout and beat drum and blow trumpets and make a noise that is disturbing to residents who live on properties neighbouring the ridge.”Superintendant Grant Glenn, EMPD spokesperson, explained everyone had to be respected and that as officials they had been peaceful in monitoring the situation. He said when EMPD officials had gone out, there had been no conflict. The groups had moved on to other locations without protest. In response to the woman who approached Henry with her concerns, he said police were looking for a solution that suited everyone but that it was imperative the peace of neighours and residents was considered when a meeting of this nature was held.

Officers from the Bedfordview police station welcomed learners from Bedfordview High School and Sizwe High School on Take A Girl Child To Work Day.Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, spokesperson for the Bedfordview Police, said this was an initiative to open up the workplace to children, s p e c i f i c a l l y ‘girl children’, however,

both male and female learners had been invited to join in the initiative this year.“They have been taught different skills, from manning the charge office to answering phones and filling out forms,” said Warrant Officer Nhlabathi. The learners explained to the tame TIMES they had been stationed at the Bedfordview Police Station for the day, after they were asked at school to name the profession they desired to be in after school. It would seem from their displays of dedication and determination, the future of Bedfordview is in safe hands. “We haven’t arrested anyone yet,” one of the learners

said, “But that will come.”

SALUTING THE COMMUNITY’S FUTURE POLICE FORCE

THE FUTURE IS IN SAFE HANDS: Learn-ers from Sizwe High School and Bedford-view High School joined the Bedfordview police for a day of hard work on Thurs-day last week.

A shot was fired during a business robbery in Van Riebeeck Avenue on Sunday (29 May) at around 10am, during which seven armed men entered a business in the road, firing a shot before leaving with stolen goods.Warrant Officer Jean Olckers, Edenvale Police spokesperson, said a panic button had notified Savika Armed Response of the robbery and a brave security reaction officer had proceeded to chase the offenders in his vehicle. He said two more shots were fired, this time at the reaction officer’s vehicle. One of the bullets hit the car but the

determined officer continued in his pursuit of the offenders. He said the officers’ diligent pursuit of the robbers eventually ended with one of the suspects abandoning their vehicle to flee in another vehicle with the other suspects.“Several items were recovered and after investigating the abandoned vehicle, it was also determined the vehicle was stolen during March. This successful recovery of stolen items was made possible by the Savika officer’s brave response,” said Warrant Officer Olckers.Edenvale police are investigating.

Bedfordview learner Tatijana Ignjatov (10) has shone brightly as a dance champion since she was just six years old. But despite her success, she remains uncomplicated and down-to-earth, enjoying her school work at Bishop Bavin School in Bedfordview, and reading books and drumming when she is out of her dance regalia of tutus and tights.Countless trophies, cups and medals have been collected by Tatijana in her years on the stage, a testament to her talent and to the hours of discipline and hard work she has put into her passion. She dances four to five hours a day, six days a week and told the tame TIMES she prefers fruit to chocolates and sweets. She recently won in the National Eisteddfod’s Foundation Phase 2016 category. The competition started in March, when Tatijana competed against 1 345 other entries. These were then whittled down to 76 semi-finalists and eventually 20 finalists on 21 May, the remaining 20 finalists contended for the crown. Tatijana was chosen as the winner.Tatijana trains in various dance disciplines, among them modern, jazz, ballet, show dance, horton, and acrobatics but has not let her success blind her to what is really important in life. She said her education was as important to her as dancing and that one day she would love to study Movement in Dance.Despite her beauty and success on stage, she remains humble: “I was born to be real not perfect”, is her life’s motto.Still, it would seem her achievements are pretty close to perfect: Among these are a number 1 ranking in modern, jazz and show dance for IDO (International Dance

Organisation) in South Africa, a number 2 ranking in ballet in 2015 for IDO in South Africa, first place at the World Dance Masters in Croatia, overall junior winner in the SA School Championships and winner of the Dance World Cup in Romania in 2015. She also featured in Strictly Come Dancing season 6 finals 2013. The list of her achievements goes on…Mom Nina explained her daughter was an extremely dedicated individual in everything she did. “She just does things with a passion, be that dance, drums or school work.” She said she believed her daughter’s heart was the secret behind her success. “At the level that Tatijana is competing in, every child is gifted and talented but not all show genuine emotion and passion during their performances like Tatijana. This shines through during her dancing and draws many into her performance. Seeing her love dancing and enjoying every minute on stage makes us happy as parents.”The National Eisteddfod Academy (NEA) is a registered non-profit company that kindles youth development through participation in the performing arts. Since 1997, close to 400 000 young people have been involved in the various activities of the NEA.

“Let’s all protect children to move South Africa forward” is the theme of Child Protection Week 2016, which runs from 29 May to 5 June. ADT Inland Region general manager Theunis Kotze said children of all ages were vulnerable to criminals, some of which can have very sinister motives. He said he had recorded incidents related to children walking home from school, during which their cell phone or bicycle was stolen at knifepoint or where they’d reported being followed or offered a lift by strangers.

He offered the following tips and has advised parents teach these to their children:

- Stay calm. Unless you feel it’s a life-and-death situation, don’t fight back; just hand over your phone or whatever else the criminals want so that they can leave.- Check them out. Try to get a good look at the criminal and memorise their physical details and clothing, as well as the vehicle they’re in, and listen for other clues which may identify them later. - Gather your groupies. Always walk in a

group and stick to streets you know – no shortcuts!- No bling! Keep

cellphones, earphones, etc. out of sight at all times.- Stay put! Wait inside the gate if you’re being picked up from school.- Keep walking. Never get into a stranger’s car, even if they are super friendly or say that someone in your family is hurt and that they’ve been sent to pick you up. Remember your mom and dad won’t do something like that without telling you! Just keep walking – in the opposite direction!- Fight! If someone tries to grab you, fight, kick and shout out that the person is not your

mom or dad.- Communicate! Never change plans without telling your parents or someone else in the family. - Break the rules! You don’t have to act normally if you’re in danger; you can act out and start screaming or throwing things around to get attention. For example, if someone tries to grab you in a shop, you need to know it’s okay to knock things off the shelf if that what it’s going to take to get the attention of another adult.

“Parents and educators need to talk to children about personal safety and security at home all the time, not just once a year during Child Protection Week,” said Kotze.

DIY is all the talk at the moment. This means getting creative, getting personal and unleashing your inner artiste for the most important people in your life to ap-preciate – you and your loved ones. TrenDIY by Build It, which has a branch at the Bedford Square, gives advice for rein-venting your home into a personal para-dise through implementing the latest in design trends, garden walls. These garden walls are becoming increas-ingly popular in homes around the world, particularly among environmentally-aware architects, designers, and gardeners. They are panels of plants, grown vertically using hydroponics, on structures that can be either free-standing or attached to walls. They are also referred to as Vertical Gardens, Living Walls or Eco walls.Home decor enthusiasts can get extra creative

and incorporate colourful flowers into their walls to enjoy the beauty of a flowering living wall.In addition to being beautiful, the walls are also beneficial: they can improve air qual-ity and reduce noise levels, and can reduce stressful workspaces into attractive, green environments. They also have the ability to calm and uplift the mood and atmosphere of a room. Visit the TrenDIY by Build It website at Trendiy.co.za for more exciting DIY and décor ideas. You can also visit the store at the Bedford Square for advice on home decorating and DIY . Contact 011 615 0877 for more information.

STUNNING: Garden walls bring the peace and tranquillity of the outdoors indoors.

Leeuwenhof Akademie’s rugby and netball teams displayed their sporting excellence at the school on Saturday last week at the school’s sports day.The event was held as a celebration of the school’s 20th birthday and was well-attended by the community, parents and learners.

A PROUD MOMENT: Leeuwenhof rugby players storm the field.
