Phaphama Zulu, the chairperson of Kapta, has given his office a time-frame of two to three weeks to return the taxis that have been stopped from operating for the past five months. According to Zulu, the Kapta routes all have leaders, members and operational policies. “The route members and leadership of Kapta Germiston route met with their members and agreed that no owner should have more than six vehicles on the route. This agreement was made without informing the Kapta office. They also agreed that they will find alternative routes for the removed taxis. The problem started when there was no implementation of new routes for the taxis as agreed,” said Zulu. He said they tried to intervene with the four affected members of the association and the perpetrators of the policy; however, death threats among the members led to the collapse of the talks. “They were not supposed to remove the taxis from operation without consulting with the office. There was an agreement among the taxi owners on their routes; however, they are failing to fullfill their promise of moving the taxis to other routes. “They stopped the taxis stating that there was no business; however, to our surprise, there are approximately 50 new taxis being operated by the association. In an attempt to avoid another bloodbath within our notoriously violent taxi industry, Katlehong People’s Taxi Association (Kapta) is in a process to sort out an internal conflict that could split the association into two centres of power. The problem started when there was no implementation of new routes for the taxis as agreed,” said Zulu.He said they tried to intervene with the four affected members of the association and the perpetrators of the policy; however, death threats among the members led to

the collapse of the talks. “They were not supposed to remove the taxis from operation without consulting with the office. The office is taking a decision that those taxis will be operating within a period of two to three weeks. No decisions will be taken outside the office. We want to bring back the Kapta that was united and which is now scattered,” concluded Zulu. Linda Nhlapho, one of the taxi owners whose taxis were prevented from operating, said about 32 taxis were prevented from operating in June. There was an agreement among the taxi owners on their routes; however, they are failing to fullfill their promise of moving the taxis to other routes. “They stopped the taxis stating that there was no business; however, to our surprise, there are approximately 50 new taxis being operated by the association. It is a serious challenge in that we are still paying instalments for those taxis and our drivers have lost their jobs. It has affected our lives in that we depend on these taxis for survival,” said Nhlapho. He added that, “We don’t want violence - we only want our taxis to return to operation,” said Nhlapho.

This is quite an interesting fortnight, with the launch of 16 days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign. The campaign will be observed from Tuesday 25 November

to 10 December to raise awareness of the negative impact that violence has on women, children and society.Various organizations around Kathorus are hosting events in line with this campaign. We

encourage community members to take part in such national activities so that they will learn, and help to reduce the escalating rate of abuse directed at women and children. Women and children are the most vulnerable to all kinds of violence and we plead with them to speak out and expose all the ills that are inflicted against them by anyone. The challenge is that women are scared to be independent and fear the unknown when they think of exposing people who are abusing them. The consequences of violence, however, are extreme and cannot be compensated for by the material things that we may gain from the

people who abuse us.This fortnight we are also celebrating World AIDS Day on 1 December, when people will be educated about ways of preventing the spread of this pandemic. We are looking forward to covering all your events and making sure that we disseminate the information to the community. Enjoy reading your favourite newspaper. Cheers for now, from Charity Moyo, Editor of tame TIMES Kathorus.

The security guards at Bophelong Private Hospital Clinix in Vosloorus recently arrested their colleague for a business robbery committed at the private hospital. According to Vosloorus Police Station spokesperson Captain Piet Rossouw, the security officers were conducting their business as usual when they noticed a doctor’s suite door wide open. “There was a suspect busy breaking and collecting electric appliances inside,” said Rossouw. “Security guards called for backup and finally arrested a male suspect. He will appear in Vosloorus Court for business-breaking.”

The residents of Dikole section in Katlehong were devastated when a stillborn baby was found in their residential area next to Dikole soccer grounds recently. Makhosazana Nhlapho, a street cleaner under Bvumi Investment, was cleaning and picking up litter around the area when she found a stillborn baby inside a black plastic bag. “I picked up the plastic, which was smelling and heavy. I checked, because there was something covered with two plastics, and l saw a stillborn baby. I called my boss and we reported the matter to the police,” said Nhlapho.

Anna Jack, a resident said, “It is the first time such a depressing incident happened in our area. It is very bad and painful what women are doing, there are many measures to avoid pregnancy rather than concealment of birth. Abortion is legal at the clinics and contraceptives are free.”Ward councillor Tebogo Maama condemned the inc ident, stating that those in a dilemma about their pregnancies should approach his office for referrals.Captain Mega Ndobe, Communications Officer of Katlehong Police Station said, “Concealment of birth is a serious crime and can lead to murder. We are appealing to the community to help identify a person who was pregnant and has given no report about the whereabouts of her baby.”

Two Katlehong schools, Intuthuko and Monde Primary School, made it into the top 10 but lost in the finals of the third ABI School Recycling Awards recently held at the ABI manufacturing plant in Midrand. The event is the brainchild of ABI and its partners, that are keen to educate learners on the importance of keeping the environment clean. Although 370 schools participated in the initiative, only 10 in the primary schools category and five in the secondary schools category competed for the awards. In the primary schools category, Khethamahle Primary School from KwaMashu in KwaZulu-Natal won and went home with a R50 000 cheque. The first runner-up was Bashokuhle Primary School, also from KwaZulu-Natal, and the second runner-up was FF Rebeiro Primary School from Mamelodi. Katlehong schools did not make it to the top three and went home empty-handed. In the secondary schools category, Maxeke from Evaton obtained position one and took home a R50 000 cheque and Jabulile from Orange Farm were the second runners-up and won themselves R20 000. Diepsloot-West Secondary School was the first runner- up and collected R 30 000 cheque for their noble effort. ABI Managing Director John Ustas said the winners will ultimately become advocates for waste management and inspire their

In a move that indicates how much Gauteng values its liberation heritage, the provincial government will continue to honour the heroes and heroines who played pivotal roles in building a free and democratic South Africa. The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) veteran leader, unionist and freedom fighter Mam’ Bertha Gxowa is to be honoured through a commemorative programme organized jointly by the provincial government, the City of Ekurhuleni

Metropolitan Municipality, and the Bertha Gxowa Foundation on Saturday 29 November. Mam’ Gxowa passed away in Johannesburg on 19 November 2010, aged 76.The day-long commemorative event will be held through a three-phase programme led by Premier David Makhura and accompanied by Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele and Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Molebatsi Bopape. “Events like the Sharpeville massacre, the Soweto uprising, the Women’s March, CODESA talks and many others were some of the game-changers that led to the

country’s achievement of democracy. With this in mind, it is therefore the province’s commitment to celebrate its heroes for their their efforts and sacrifices in fighting for a free a n d democratic South Africa,” said MEC Molebatsi Bopape. The first phase of the programme, which starts at 07:00 in the morning, will entail the official declaration of Gxowa’s grave-site at Thomas Nkobi Cemetery as a heritage

site. This event is expected to be attended by her family, senior government officials and others. The Ke-Ditselana Cultural Village in Vosloorus will thereafter host the next phase from 10:00 that will include the unveiling of

a statue of Mam’Bertha, remarks from the Bertha Gxowa Foundation, government and other political and civic organizations. The commemorative event will then be

wrapped up with a Memorial Lecture at the Germiston Banquet Hall from 18:00.

Tame TIMES recently published a story about the Skippa Soccer Academy hosting a soccer clinic at Eden Park Stadium on 1 October for u/17 and u/15 male and female soccer players. According to the event organizer, Mzwandile “Zane” Hlaka also known as Nkosi, the purpose of the trials was to give youngsters exposure

to soccer and to link them to reputable soccer teams and agencies. However, the day of hosting of the soccer clinic came and went without the event taking place, and parents of the aspiring soccer stars are concerned that the organizer disappeared with their hard-earned cash without proper explanation. “Zane told

me to deposit a R350 registration fee and promised that they would host soccer trials soon. However, he continues to change trials dates, venues and cellphone starter packs. My 8-year-old son Bokamoso Motaung is disappointed and heartbroken that the trials did not happen as promised. His dream was to see himself playing alongside the

late Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa,” said mother Relebohile Motaung.

Speaking to tame TIMES, Zane said the soccer clinics were postponed due to local teams that opposed the initiative. He said within Eden Park there were only two soccer players who paid R350 each. “I promise that their money will be deposited back into their respective accounts before 1 December. Trials will not take place, because we did not have enough soccer players to make up the team. We will be hosting other soccer trials soon at a venue to be announced,” said Zane.
