Founded in Buenos Aires in 1996,Estampas Porteñas is led by Argentineballerina Carolina Soler. Conceived, cho-reographed and artfully directed by Soler,Tango Fire showcases the intricate razor-sharp timing and dueling partnering oftango. The soundtrack for the evening oftraditional and modern tango arrange-ments, including works by legendary AstorPiazzolla, is provided by the Quatrotango. This musical ensemble of piano, violin, bass, bandoneon with guest vocalist isled by musical director Gabriel Clenar.

Since 2003, Tango Fire has touredworldwide receiving rave reviews fromSydney to South Africa and Edinburgh toNew York. Back by popular demand, TangoFire returns to the United States for a 16city cross-country tour.

Born in the brothels, dance halls andgangster underground of Buenos Aires inthe late 1880s, tango evolved as a resultof borrowed dance and music forms fromthe poor immigrant populations from Af-rica and Europe that blended their cul-

tures with native-born Argentines. Bycombining traditional polkas, waltzes andmazurkas with popular habanera fromCuba and rhythms from Africa, tangoemerged. This sexy dance form quicklyevolved to become the dance rage in Parisand the world by the early 20th century.Following tango’s Golden Age in the 1940sand 50s, interest in dance form dimin-ished as American swing and rock and rollbecame popular. In the 1980s, tangobegan a flourishing renaissance that con-tinues today following the success of theinternational touring show Tango Argen-tina and the Broadway musical ForeverTango.

The New Orleans Ballet Associationis the region’s premiere presenting andservice organization dedicated solely tofurthering the art of dance and dance edu-cation.

Following the performances of TangoFire the New Orleans Ballet Associationwill continue its season of dance with thefresh and exciting Aspen Santa Fe Ballet(March 28-29); and the unsurpassedbeauty of classical dance with ABSOULTE

BALLET!, featuring dancers from the ac-claimed Pacific Northwest Ballet (May 9-10).

Yes, 2007 has been a GREATyear here in New Orleans andall along the Gulf Coast; but

are you ready for 2008?

Auld Sweet Olive Bed andBreakfast will kick off NewYear's Eve with their annual

afternoon celebration Bears and Bubblesfrom 4 till 7pm. Proprietors Dale and Daveinvite all you bears and friends to stop by.I can tell you from personal experience;this is a great way to start an evening in arelaxed atmosphere with some great folksfrom all over the country.

By the time this is published ourneighbors over in Mobile andthe Gulf Coast will have been

very busy celebrating the holidays. TheSouthern Renegades hosted their LeatherSanta night at B-bob’s featuring Colt ManRoger Danik as Santa. Now that would bea Santa to see! I can only imagine who allwas sitting on his lap requesting a presentor six.

The evening was also a Toy Collec-tion Night for South Alabama Cares, anAIDS service agency. Guests were askedto donate a toy in return for entry in the door

with prize drawings for all sorts of Coltmemorabilia.

On December 8th, the Gulf Coast Bearand Leather Association held their annualBears ‘n Baskets teddy bear and gift bas-ket auction at the Roundup in Pensacola. The Bears were joined by the Renegadesto raise money for G.E.A.R.S., an agencydedicated to teaching safer sex practicesto at risk young men in the Gulf Coastregion. The GCBLA has been active inraising money for local charities in theircommunity for years, and deserve everybit of thanks from all of us.

It is good to see the GCBLA and South-ern Renegades working together for thebenefit of the Gulf Coast GLBT Commu-nity. It just goes to show that when clubs donot just coexist but get along and worktogether, everyone comes out on top.

Check out the upcoming events ofboth clubs on the web sites:www.southernrenegareds.com andwww.gcbla.com respectively.

ginning to end this year. But have no fear;the krewes are hard at work making prepa-rations for the flash and glitz of the balmasque.

Mardi Gras 2008 promises to be fastand furious but filled to the brim with activi-ties. No matter how you celebrate it, fromparades to bal masques, to people watch-ing in the French Quarter, there will beplenty to keep you busy.

The Krewe of Amon Ra will hold their43rd Bal Masque on January 12 at EnglishTurn Country Club. The party begins at8pm. Check Amon Ra’s website for moreinformation: gaymardigras.com/amonra.

The Krewe of Petronius will hold theirball on Sunday, January 13th at the ScottishRite Temple. The ball starts at 7pm.

The New Orleans Bear and Bear Trap-per Social Club will gather at the corner ofSt. Charles Ave. and Josephine St. onSunday, January 27th at 10am for theirannual Bears on Parade. The Bears gettogether to watch three parades roll downSt. Charles Ave. and try to guess who theyknow on the floats. I know many membersof various clubs ride in the Krewe of KingArthur Parade every year.

Also on January 27th, the Krewe ofSatyricon will hold their annual Bal Masquestarting at 8pm at The Sugar Mill. For moreinformation and tickets, check outSatyricon’s web site:www.mystickreweofsatyricon.com.

Saturday, February 2nd, brings us toNight of the Black Mask Block Party at thePhoenix bar hosted by the Lords of Leather.Come on down to Rampart and ElysianFields, and join the Lords for a Beer Bust

and much more as we take over the street.Drinks will be available inside and out.

Also on February 2nd is the Krewe ofArmeinius Bal Masque which will be heldat the Alario Center in Westwego begin-ning at 8pm.

Sunday, February 3rd is the Lords ofLeather Ball Masque XXV at 8pm in theAlario Center in Westwego. With this be-ing the big 25th Anniversary for the Lords, big things are planned.

Ball Captain David tells me they areincluding many new and traditional as-pects this year. “Expect a few surprises aswell,” he said. I have seen the hard workthe Lords are putting in and can attest thatthis will be one of the best balls ever.

Information on the Lords Bal Masqueand the Night of the Black Mask Block Partycan be found on the web sitewww.lordsofleather.com.

It may seem like a lot to think aboutthis early but time is limited this year. Yes,you can schedule all the things you wantto do but make sure you leave time to justhave fun. That’s what carnival is all aboutafter all.

And as we approach the begin-ning of 2008, take a few mo-ments and remember 2007.

OK, that’s enough time. Now look aheadto 2008! This is a great time to be alive andtaking part in your community. Come onout and say hi to some new friends. Youcan make a difference.

Too all of you, Happy Holidays and Ihope 2008 is the best year ever!

Happy New Year!

Through a fog of oxycodone, Iam contemplating resolutionsfor the New Year, the steroids

trails that have kept CNN busy all morningand where equality fits into the Nationalplan. At some point after the Democraticcandidates’ debate, the names of sportsstars will be posted according to their useof drugs. It is folly to me as no one seemsto really want to know. And when we do findout, no one wants to do anything.

That brings me to equality. If you com-mit a crime, you should be punished.Michael Vick belongs in jail. If he is con-victed of using steroids, Barry Bondsshould serve time in jail. That’s equalityunder the law. Law makers and law en-forcers will turn a blind eye to crimes insports. What does that say to our youth? Itis okay to do it if you don’t get caught or ifyou excel in sports.

That is the American way of equality.Sports heroes are not equal. They areabove the regular street junkie. If this coun-try is too jaded to punish those clearlyoffending the law, then how will there beequality in any area of the country?

Are gay people equal to straightpeople? In the Constitution, yes. In publicopinion, no. Not until the gay community-at-large stands up together in a court ofjustice will we see change in equality.

I listened to the very congenial debateamong the Democrats. Everyone spoke

of change and equality. Nothing was saidabout gay rights. This is the time to contactthe office of the candidate of your choiceand demand to know where he/she standsand what they will do for our equality if theyare elected using our vote.

Our votes are more precious this yearthan in any year past. Democrats think thegay vote is theirs just because they areDemocrats. This should not be true. Weshould make them work for our support.

If you don’t watch CNN eight hours aday, you might be pleased to know thatHillary was outstanding. The talking headshad lots of useless things to say but if youare a person of independence and anyintelligence, you can hear for yourselveswhat is being said by each candidate. Weneed to start listening to the candidatesand making up our own minds rather thanlistening to the media bull-artists who willtry to make up our minds for us.

I am still hoping for a Clinton—Obamaticket. They seemed to play nice on TVtoday.

Well, the pain pills are leaving me andI need to drag myself back into bed. Ilearned while in the hospital that kneesurgery is the most painful surgery ac-cording to nurses and physical therapists.I am a chicken – so I would not have donethis if I had known. However, now that it ishistory, I am feeling good about the painbecause it is less everyday. There is morerange of motion even with the staples still

in than there was before the surgery. Thisis going to be a success as long as I amgetting good drugs while I heal. I don’t dopain well.

This is a rather short column but I justwanted to let you know that I am alive andwill be well soon. I hope you enjoy a verymerry Christmas and that your New Yearwill be happy and healthy.
