Vibrant Clarity

project focus:architecture as branding.

Vibrant Clarity, Toyota’s design ethos, is a synergy of energy and rationality.

Vibrant Clarity is an office complex that houses the creative design headquarter of Toyota cars as well as a showroom exhibiting the newest creations. Using Toy-ota’s design ethos, Vibrant Clarity, as the main narrative of the project, architecture can then begin to act as a branding strategy for the company.

As the main feature of the building, the folded cladding system is both enviornmentally protecting and aestheti-cally unique from its surroundings.

CLARITY refers to the circulation. A central public staircase hosts the public display area, and the long private staircase marks the separation of public and private spaces. Circulation then be-comes a highlighted event of interaction.

02 ART STUDIO & GALLERY COMPLEXlocarno, switzerland

il rivellino

project focus:intervention & adaptive reuse

An intervention upon the pre-existing castle Rivellino in Locarno, Switzerland, a team of four fourth-year stu-dents explores an artist studio/gallery compex serves to bridge the ever expanding gap between the histori-cal castle ruin, Il Rivellino, and the Locarno community. Rather than a isolated application, the complex becomes a series of vignettes which draws the user in and ulti-mately reaching the Rivellino. Individuals experience the Rivellino as fragments, as each fragment provides the user an alternative perspective in un-derstanding the whole.

As we begin to re-think the relationship between the user and the Rivellino, the opportunity to connect the in-dividual to the community occurs through the visible layering of spaces. Calling attention to the physical and visual interaction to the Rivellino, whereby ultimately presenting vignettes in which the individual experiences them as a body in motion as they interact with the complex.

Bringing awareness to the relevance that it placed upon the Rivellino, The VOID space creates a context for the arrangement of program-atic elements which ultimately connect back to the surrounding com-munity. Through the complete reconfiguration of the existing path, the individual experiences circulation as a means to view the process and completion of regional artwork .

To perceive the Rivellino in yet another vignette is down and within the base of the complex. Also, upon reaching the top of the Rivellino from the gallery, users are drawn to the movement of the elevator down to the Rivellino. The

suspense and contrast in lighting emphasizes the essence of the DaVinci ruin.

Project focus: roles of representation & methodologies in the production of architecture and in broadening the conceptual range by which architecture contributes to our cultural imagination.

For the Boston Film Festival, Boston City Hall was sliced into numerous sections in which I and my partner, Danielle Lieu, were asked to design upon. When placed side by side, the integration of two sites creates a distinct void. Rather than disregard the site conditions given by the re-mains of Boston City Hall, the void is instead used as the core of the project and a link to the program of the Boston Film Festival theaters. In itself, the void becomes experiential with proportion changes through the floor, walls, and ceilings, produces dynamism with the infiltration of light throughout the various hours of the day, and provides functionality as the primary source of circulation.

With the development of the void comes the further discussion of the life above it. Activity on the plaza level becomes a key design chal-lenge as the void becomes a direct mediator of life both underground and above ground.

Void: The void remains the main space for circulation and the center of mooded ambiance. The integrated site design allows for the site to intrude into the void space. The un-dulating ceiling heights in the void allow a visitor different experiences at various locations in the void.

Theaters:Theaters lie on the same linear path that allows for simpli-fied circulation. The mediation between above and below is addressed as floor and ceiling acting as both one and an-other. From the void, what seems as a roof to a space also acts as the floor to the open air theater that sits above it. Exploded Plan

void

project focus:light and darkvoids and solids

With circulation being the main feature, this mu-seum brings light and serenity to the visitors. As one circulates through the building, one progres-sively experiences light and dark, solid walls and void spaces.

The building is mostly organized by solid walls in N-S direction, leaving E-W direction rather fluid. Wall panels along the void seemingly dissolve into the light.

05 NEW HOUSING TOWER CONCEPT FOR THE FUTUREMexico City, Mexico

Barrio de Los Paracaidistas

Spring 2010 Cal Poly Mock-Firm Competition 2010 winning entry as a part of Metous Studio

position in team:coordinationmodel team leaderphysical model-making

The winning entry for the Chicago Mock Firms Competition 2010 was led by head designers David Lee and Anthony Stahl and a team of 10 third year students as a mock firm, Metous Studio.

Preserving the character Mexico City; specifically its propensity for change, the mosaic nature of its urban character and the tra-ditional barrio, this tower is a frame-work for a new vertical city. As the lead of the production team, I organized a team of five third year students, managed tasks and schedules, coordinated between the design and production teams, as well as realized the model. The success of the finished model is inseparable from good coordination, communication and model making skills. Under a tight schedule, our team was able to deliver a model on time and assist the victory of the project.

Lamp roulette

project focus:designing for user participationfurniture making with: Cnc router laser cutter

Different from the fixed and permanent properties of what they used to be considered, architecture and fur-niture nowadays are moving more towards user-en-gagement and customization. With this paradigm shift in mind, “Lamp Roulette” is designed to be a shelf lamp that encourages active seeking and exploring, and a myriad of storage alignments and light qualities unravel as users turn the plates. Possible alignments include but are not limited to: cup holder, re-mote holder, pen holder, vase, etc.

Claybank is a 125,100 sq. ft. state of the art detention facility under the AB900 funding. I participated in the Schematic Design and Design Devel-opment Documentation and Elevation designs. The project also has an asso-ciated security electronics upgrade of Claybank’s existing facility, which I drafted most of the Construction Document Drawings, such as demolition and new construction plans, sections, elevations, casework design, details, etc. During the process of project, I had also participated in consultant coordination meetings, user meetings, site visits, etc.

THU Law School Library

competition work done by a team of three { X. Liu, D.D. Chang}

conceptual designmasterplanningdraftingstudy-model makingproject presentation booklet & boards

Inspired by Tsinghua University’s campus atmosphere, the core of the project focuses on creating an energetic and wel-coming complex that is harmonious with the university’s aim towards high quality and student-friendly research enviornment.

The complex includes the Law School Library, which is the main focus of the project, an administrative office building, and an ex-tension of the current School of Economics. The three buildings come together to form an open courtyard encourging student gathering and interaction.

As the heart of the Law School Library, the moot court, has be-come the center of all library organization and circulation. By “floating” it in the center of the library, an linear atrium and fluid break-out spaces start to emerge. The moot court as a clear visual relationship with the rest of the interior, stressing the important relationship between the study and the practice of law.
