Taos Ski Valley founders Ernie and Rhoda Blake, 1958.

The beginning...A SKI PIONEER’S DREAM

taos ski valley is here today due to the imagination and hard work of a remarkable swiss-german man named ernie blake. a passionate skier, blake always dreamed of building a ski area for his family. in 1951, from aboard his cessna 170, blake spotted twining, an abandoned mining town nestled in a huge snow basin in the sangre de cristo mountain range. the remoteness of the basin especially attracted blake- he wanted his ski area to be a destina-tion resort, a place where skiers came to stay awhile. in 1956, blake and his wife, rhoda, moved their three kids to the base of taos ski valley where they lived very simply in a 16-foot trailer and dedicated their lives to creating a world-class ski resort. today, taos ski valley is owned and operated by ernie and rhoda’s children and grand children.

the european atmosphere and architecture of taos ski valley is due to the ski area’s pioneers, an amalgamation of german, french, austrian and swiss residents and employees. combined with the local native american and spanish cultures, taos ski valley is a truly unique place to visit. come and stay awhile.

while taos ski valley offers countless winter activities, nothing can match the world-class runs of the infamously steep-sloped resort. beginners and intermediates needn’t fret; build your confidence on over 400 acres of groomed and gladed runs. this family-owned ski area rarely has lift lines and boasts the top-rated ski and snowboard school in north america. with 110 trails, 305 inches average annual snowfall and 300+ days of sunshine, taos ski valley is a true skier’s and snowboarder’s paradise.

looking for additional adventures? embrace the chill on taos ski valley’s family-friendly tubing hill, open after lifts close. roar through acres of forested wilderness on an exhilarating snowmobile ride. snowshoe 2 miles to william’s lake, where you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the wide-open lake fork basin.

après ski or après adventure at one of the many restau-rants and bars that serve hand-mixed margaritas, chilled martinis or steaming cups of hot chocolate. after hours, you’ll find nightly entertainment such as music, karaoke or billiards.

BEYOND THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE

the town of taos, just 18 miles away, is a high desert oasis at the base of the sangre de cristo mountains. taos is a unique blend of spanish, native and anglo cultures. explore the native village of taos Pueblo—a unesco world heritage site—where the “tiwa” people have practiced their traditions for over a thousand years. historically, taos has always drawn artists, which is evidenced by the many galleries, museums and festi-vals. discover the historic district and find plenty of shopping, unique art, and some of the finest restaurants in northern new mexico. only a few short miles to the west lies the highest bridge in america over the rio grande and surrounded by the newly established río grande del norte national monument: 242,500 pristine acres of unique and varied landscapes, wildlife and a wealth of recreational opportunities.

for a scenic day trip, drive the enchanted circle, an 84-mile scenic byway through majestic valleys and breathtaking mountain passes. taos has a laid back atmosphere. . .termed by locals as the “land of mañana.” you’ll never want to leave the tranquility and natural beauty when you discover taos.
