Welcome

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a way of gently releas-ing negative emotional energy, including memories, through tapping on a series of meridian points on the face and body.

This short guide is meant to help you get started tapping right away. It covers the basic steps of how to do EFT, and instruc-tions on how to use it for both the physical and emotional as-pects of acne.

There are also several helpful methods for getting to core issues and beliefs, because getting to and neutralizing these deep is-sues is the fastest way to dramatically heal acne. This can feel uncomfortable at first, because they are often strong negative be-liefs about ourselves. This is where tapping shines. Use it on any strong emotions that begin to come up.

Acne appears when old painful memories are triggered by our day to day experiances, and the body feels threatened, which weakens the immune system and circulation. Using EFT on these allows them to peacefully and safely dissapate, which in turn allows the body to heal itself.

The Steps for EFT

Step 1 - Choose an Issue to Work On

The first step is to choose an issue to work on. The more specif-ic the issue is, the better the results. For instance, if acne caus-es you to feel embarrassment, imagine a particular situation in which this feeling comes up, and then create a phrase which captures the feeling: “The look on their face which made me feel so embarrassed.”

If your acne is bothering you, create a phrase based on a specific thing about it: “This pimple on my chin,” “The reddness on my cheeks.”

Tip: The wording doesn’t matter, so long as it carries the feeling for you.

Step 2 - Determine the Intensity Level

[No feelings at all] 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 [Extreme distress]

The next step is to decide on a scale of 0 to 10 how much this problem or issue distresses you. It can be either physical or emotional pain.

This step is helpful, since it can be useful for double checking that a memory is completly clear before moving on. It’s like set-ting a benchmark, so that after tapping, you can check back and see what changed, and if there is still something that needs tap-ping on.

Tip: Remember there is no right or wrong answer here. If you’re not sure what your intensity level is, just guess at it, and that will be fine.

Step 3 - The Setup Statement [Optional]

The Setup Statement is here to help prepare the body’s ener-gy system for EFT. This is done by tapping on the Karate Chop Point while repeating the problem (followed by an affirmation), three times.

“Even though I have this __[Problem]__, I deeply and complete-ly accept myself.” - x3

Replace the [Problem] here with whatever issue you chose in Step 1 to focus this round of EFT on. For example,

“Even though I have this embarrassment about my acne, I deeply and completely accept myself.” - x3

Sometimes saying “I deeply and completely accept myself ” can be difficult. If saying this is hard, use different words that work

for you. For instance, some of my favorites are:

“Even though I have [this problem], I’m okay with myself any-way.” “Even though I have [this problem], I might be able to accept myself anyway.”

The wording isn’t critical - go ahead and experiment with differ-ent affirmations to see what feels the best for you.

Karate Chop Point The fleshy part of the outside of either hand. Tap this point solid-ly with the first two or three fingers of the op-posite hand. Alternatively, you can tap the karate chop points of both hands against each other.

Step 4 - Tapping

Now that we have selected a problem to work on and deter-mined the emotional intensity, it’s time to put them to use.

This is done by tapping on a series of points on the face and up-per body, while repeating a reminder phrase to keep our atten-tion on the problem.

Tip - Tap the points firmly with the first two or three finger-tips of whichever hand (or both) feels comfortable. Tap each point 5-10 times. Using two or three fingers allows you to cover the points even if you’re not exactly on them. Tap with enough force to be felt, but not enough to bruise the skin.

Note: The points are identical on both sides of the body. Tapping on either set of points (or both at the same time) is equally effective. The order in which they are tapped isn’t important, although it’s common to go from the top down-wards.

Tapping on the points acts as a release on whatever we’re fo-cusing on. Repeating a short reminder phrase is an easy way to keep our attention on the problem while we tap. For this, we can simply repeat the phrase we created in step one as we tap on each point. For instance, repeat;

“This zit on my chin,” or “This redness on my cheek,”

while tapping on each of the points. The wording isn’t critical, and you can repeat the same thing different ways as long as it keeps your attention on the original problem.

Things to expect when tapping: Tapping releases stuck energy, letting it flow through the body again. When this happens, it’s normal to yawn, sigh, or feel sleepy. It’s a good sign, and means that the energy is moving.

Tapping Points Explained

Crown of Head - The crown of the head. Tap in a small circle to be sure of hitting the point.

Eyebrow - The inner point of the eyebrow, slightly above and to the side of the bridge of the nose.

Side of Eye - On the bone, at the point of the outer corner of the eye.

Under Eye - On the point of the cheekbone, centered under the eye.

Under Nose - Centered on the upper lip between the nose and mouth.

Chin - Centered between the lower lip and the chin. (Not acutally on the point of the chin.)

Collarbone - About two inches out and down from the ‘U’ shape at the top of the breastbone. The point is just below the collar-bone and outside the breastbone in the soft area of flesh.

Under Arm - Centered on the side of the body, about four inches below the armpit.

Deconstructing a Truamatic Event

Since the defining moments of our lives can usually be nar-rowed down to specific events and memories, it can be valuable to know how to deconstruct them, in order to clear them of their emotional charge as fast as possible.

One of the main concepts of tapping and EFT is that memories and events are made up of multiple parts, or aspects. In order to collapes the whole thing, each particular side or nu-ance of the problem may need to be tapped on. If an issue per-sists after the first round of tapping, that’s a good sign there are other dimentions to the issue that haven’t been addressed yet.

Step 5 - Check the Emotional Intensity Again

After the round of tapping, check in to see if the emotional in-tensity has lessened at all. If so, great! If it’s near a 0, then it’s time to move on. If it still has some intensity, but not as much as at first, then do a few more rounds on different aspects until it’s completely neutralized.

Note: Sometimes zits will appear on the tapping points. If this happens, simply skip that point or tap beside it until the pimple is gone and the skin is healed. The technique won’t suffer from missing a point, and missing one is better than aggravating an active zit.

Imagine accidentally droping a glass of milk, for example, and all the different sensations and feelings that can be present in one incident. The feeling of the glass slipping from your hand, the sound of it breaking when it hits the floor, the sight of the milk spilled on the floor, the smell of spilled milk afterward, people present who may have seen you drop it, etc.

When tapping on this incident, each of the different senses is a separate aspect that can be tapped on, until all the emotional charge is removed from the overall ‘spilled milk’ memory.

For sure, spilling milk isn’t normally trumatic most of the time, but the same types of aspects are present in most trumatic memories. The sound of a person’s voice, the look on their face, their body language, the location where the event took place - are the kind of tapable aspects to look for.

An easy way to check if a memory or experiance has been cleared completely is to run through all the five senses, and check that the emotional intensity of them all is clear. If it is, and you can think about the event without distress, then you’ve done it, and can probably move on from that memory.

Aspects aren’t limited to the five senses, and if something else bothers you in a particular memory, you can tap to remove the intensity from it.

What To Tap On

Now that you know the tapping technique, I want to show some ways of use it to begin getting relief for both the emotional and physical pain of acne.

Emotions

A great place to start is on issues of every day life which cause us emotional distress. We all deal with things like relatinoships, money, family and work, so using EFT on these daily trails is an excellent way bring immidiate peace and comfort on a tangible level. Simply pick an issue which is bothering you at present, and begin doing rounds of tapping on it. After the initial rounds, start to break down whatever it is into different aspects, as I de-scribed above, and tap on each aspect.

Tracing

Another method is called tracing. Pick one of the main present-ing feelings about your acne. Feelings like:

• Shame• Embarrassment• Fear• Hopelessness

• Depression• Anger• Feeling jinxed• Helplessness

Do several round of tapping on whichever one you choose. Af-ter three or four rounds, began asking yourself these questions:

• What does this feeling remind me of?• When have I felt this way before?• Are they any times in real life when something besides acne

created this same feeling?

It usually doesn’t take long for these simple questions to lead to memories of things we’ve experianced. Sometimes we don’t have to look far at all for them, because they happened hours or days ago and they’re still fresh in our minds. Other times, older memories may come up that happened years ago.

Once a memory has been uncovered, begin tapping on all the different aspects of it, such as the sights, sounds, smells, feelings and emotions associated with it. Sometimes other thoughts or memories will come up once we begin tapping. This is a good thing, and it means our bodies are bringing stuff to our attention so that it can be cleared. Just fol-low up with whatever memories come, and tap on each on in turn, until you can think about it without discomfort.

This is the most organic part of EFT. Since each of us has a unique set of formative (and sadly, sometimes traumatic) mem-

Tapping for Acne Itself

In order to permanently prevent acne from reappearing, it’s nes-sessary to go to the root emotional issues underlying it.

EFT is a powerful tool however, and it can also help the physical symptoms of acne directly. This ‘cosmetic’ tapping is an excel-lent way to begin using EFT, and can be done on a daily basis. Simply tap on whatever is bothering you about your acne.

Do several rounds of tapping on any or all of the parts of acne, such as:

• Pimples • Redness• Itchiness• Oilyness• Breakouts• Painful zits These are just a few of the specific things about acne that can be tapped on. EFT can be used on anything, so any aspect of your acne that bothers you is something to tap on.

EFT Quick Reference SheetStep 1 - Choose an issue to work on. For instance:

“This feeling of helplessness about my acne.”

Step 2 - Determine the intensity level of this issue. For instance may-be a 7 represients how much this issue is troubling you.

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, [7] 8, 9, 10

Step 3 - Create a simple setup statement based on the issue you choose in step 1. Repeat this setup statement three times while firmly tapping the Karate Chop Point.

“Even though I have this feeling of helplessness, I deeply and complete-ly accept myself.” x 3

Step 4 - Repeat a reminder phrase, such as “This feeling of hopeless-ness.” while tapping on each of the points.

Step 5 - Check the intensity of the issue again. If it has gone down close to 0, move on to another issue.

Step 6 - If it still has an emotional charge, ask these questions:

• What does this feeling remind me of?• When have I felt this way before?

If these questions bring anything up, simply break down this new event into spcific aspects, and repeat the steps above to clear whatev-er comes up.

Here are some general rounds of tapping on the emotional issues of acne. They can be a great place to begin exploring your own emo-tions about acne. The more personal and specific the EFT rounds are, the better the results, so feel free to take them and make them yours.

In summary,

I believe nobody should have to suffer the kind of depres-sion, shame, and low self-esteem that acne brings to so many of us. I want to empower each individual acne suffer-er by giving them the tools to bring healing to themselves. I work with many individuals as an EFT pracititioner, but I wanted to reach out to far more acne sufferers than I could personally work with, and this guide is a small step in that direction. I’m making this guide freely available in the hope that many people will be able to experience the healing EFT can bring.

If this guide inspires even one person to pursue emotional freedom, it will have done what I wanted.
