The Solar SystemWe live in a solar system with 8 planets and 3 dwarf planets.By Taparia Engu

The sun The sun is a star and is the centre of the

solar system and is 6000 degrees Celsius .

It is a mass star that can generate nuclear fusion which is extremely powerful.

The sun is our main star that helps us to form life on Earth and helps make some of the things that happen on other planets.

Mercury Mercury is the barren planet and is

so hot because of how close it is to the Sun.

It orbits the Sun the fastest and during the day it is 400 degrees Celsius and at night it plunges to 180 degrees Celsius.

There is no air at all on Mercury and a very thin atmosphere so life would not form here.

Venus Venus is the same size as earth and

sometimes scientists call it our sister planet. Venus has clouds that trap heat and cause a massive green house effect.

It has no moons and it is the closest to us.

If you look in the sky you can spot Venus. It is called the evening star.

EarthThe third planet of the solar system and the main terrestrial planet. It is our home planet that is quite wonderful in many ways.Earth is the only known planet that has fresh water. It is also famous for life on Earth, it is just right for life to form and animals so thank Earth for that. Its magnetic field protects us from harmful UV rays that could destroy life on Earth.

Mars The red planet is known for it’s raging

sandstorms and rocky terrain. It has cliffs higher than you can imagine

that are bigger than a skyscraper and is a planet that might have life.

It isn’t hot but it is sandy and that sand is the reason why Mars is red not blue or gray.

Jupiter The gas giant of the solar system is a

fast and strong planet that is bigger than you think.

It orbits on its axis every few hours and it has a raging storm that might have been on the face of the planet when it was created.

Also it has lots of moons that are amazing in many ways.

Page 8: Taparia's da solar system pp

SaturnKnown for its beautiful rings Saturn is an amazing planet and it is the second biggest planet in the solar system.Saturn is amazingly huge but if you were to put it in water astoundingly it would float because it is made up of gas which is really light. Its rings are made up of space rocks and clumps of ice that all together make what we see now.

Uranus Uranus is a strange planet considering

that it is sideways. Its south and north poles are both side

ways so it rolls on its axis not spins. Uranus also has rings like Saturn, just smaller.

And every 42 years each side of the planet gets to face the Sun and then after 42 years back to darkness.

Neptune The blue planet is a storm planet that

has massive howling winds. It has a dark spot on it that is a giant storm, like Jupiter.

Neptune suffers from the most storms and winds. It is a very windy planet but not too cold and also it rains diamonds which is quite strange.

Dwarf planet areaWe are beyond Neptune and here we find the cold yet amazing planets that are as small as a country. These dwarf planets used to be planets but even though they are no longer planets, they are still amazing.

Pluto Pluto was named after a Roman God of

the underworld and it lives to its name. Pluto was officially a dwarf planet in

2006. and the atmosphere of Pluto consists of rock and a coat of ice.

It is the second biggest dwarf planet in the solar system and it has a moon half its size.
