PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

TAPPA Competition - “Gentle CC Please” Uh, no. Honest CC.Kevin Newsome

We’ve all seen it on Facebook. Someone posts an image on a group page, then asks for “gentle constructive criticism”. What they mean is, “I’m new, so please don’t beat me up. I want to learn, but I don’t want to be told my image sucks.”

But what if it does suck? What if it’s off center - or too centered? What if it’s out of focus, or you applied some hideous action that rendered it, well... hideous? Do you not want to know that, so you can avoid doing it again? Of course you do. You just don’t want to be publicly humiliated in the process, right? That’s where TAPPA comes in.

Our juried competition will score and critic your images by three QUALIFIED judges, not just some anonymous group of Janes and Joes who’ve been at it less time than you! And because no one knows whose images they are while being scored and critiqued, there’s no embarrassment if you truly enter an image that, well... sucks!

Face it, we ALL learn from EVERY image entered. We learn what to do and what NOT to do. And in the end, we all create better images. No public bruising necessary.

Enter and learn. “Honest CC” sans humiliation. Doesn’t get better than that.

4 TAPPA Tribune

I was talking with a new client and he said something that got me thinking; “didn’t other people’s Mothers teach them what my Mom did?” He was talking about vendors and freelancers in particular.

According to him, and my observation, Mom’s advice is easy to forget. It’s simple common sense, but in today’s busy world they’re often forgotten and some things just need repeating. I know it was good for me to give it some thought. Here are a few of my favorites:

You are judged by the company you keep. A-List people do business with A-List people. Honest people don’t hang around dishonest people. Good people don’t participate in evil. There’s an old saying that goes like this: If you’re not a duck, don’t hang around the pond or people will think you’re a duck.

A person in front of you is more important than someone who isn’t there. A person calling, texting or e-mailing can wait. Don’t insult some-one by taking a call or texting while speaking with them. Of course there are exceptions, in that case ask if it’s okay to take the call. Those exceptions should be rare. This applies to call-waiting also.

Don’t wear out your welcome. Keep your pro-motional communication to an appropriate level. One really good e-mail a month is better than one mediocre e-mail every day or every week.

There’s a time and place for everything. People who are always “on” and people who are always hawking their services are annoying.

Your word is your bond. In these days of explicit contracts, for every little thing, be a man or wom-an of your word. If you do, you’ll stand out and people will trust and want to do business with you.

Your reputation is the most valuable thing you have. We’re known by our deeds and your busi-ness deeds should be consistent with your person-al beliefs and standards.

Knowledge can never be lost or taken away. If you’re reading this, chances are you believe in continuous self-improvement by learning.

NEXT MONTH’S PROGRAM

Jane Connor-Ziser Image Processing For Fine Art Photography

Most photographers consider image adjustments and retouching to be necessary evils, something to batch and get out of the way as quickly as possible. Jane considers them to be powerful tools for affecting the quality, mood and perceived value of artistic photo-graphic images. Why do what everyone else is doing when you have the expertise and imagination to lift your imagery to a level that is visually distinctive and beautiful beyond the capabilities of cameras to capture the people and world around us?

In this presentation Jane will show you her processes for using ACR (or Lightroom) to create artistic choices for image adjustments and enhancements, plus how to incorporate Smart technology into your photo retouching process. You will learn how to sculpt and paint with light, control backgrounds and use retouching tools to create mood and expression. Everyone knows Photoshop; it’s what you do with it that’s important. In addition to the formal presentation ma-terial, Jane will have open question and answer time so bring your imaging challenges to share.

Photoshop TipsProvided by the National Association of Photoshop Professionals

Deep Eye Sockets If your subject has dark eye sockets, press Com-mand-J (PC: Ctrl-J) to duplicate the Background layer, then change the layer blend mode to Screen to brighten the entire image. Option-click (PC: Alt-click) the Add Layer Mask icon (circle in a square) to hide this brighter layer behind a black mask. Press D to set your Foreground color to white; choose a small, soft-edged Brush (B); then paint over the entire eye-socket area to brighten that area. Now, lower the layer Opacity until the bright-ening matches the surrounding skin.

Provided by Scott Kelby

Deleting A Layer This one is short and sweet: Instead of dragging a layer to the Delete Layer icon (trash can) to delete it, you can quickly delete a layer by pressing the Delete (PC: Backspace) key.

Provided by Matt Kloskowski

Expanded View For Adjustment Layers If you find the Adjustments panel is a little on the small side, you can make it larger with one click. Down at the bottom of the panel is an icon (sec-ond from the left) that changes it to Expanded View. Click that icon to get a larger panel.

Provided by Dave Cross

Fast Processing Use the often-overlooked Image Processor (from Photoshop: File>Scripts>Image Processor; from Bridge:Tools>Photoshop> Image Processor) to quickly create new file types, such as TIFFs and JPEGs. In the Image Processor dialog, select your images (if you run it from Bridge, select your imag-es first), choose an output location, select the file type you want, specify the quality and size, and click Run.

Send a thank-you note. Want to stand out? You’d be surprised how few people do this.

Beware of snakes. You have a gut for a reason, follow it. Chances are it’s right. I can’t think of a single time I’ve gone against my gut and not regretted it.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. Try to be known as someone who always has a level head and reacts calmly.

The fact that most people don’t do these things is a great oppor-tunity to stand out among your competitors. It’s impossible to do these things all the time. I know I don’t, but I’m trying. I’m glad my Mom hammered these things into my little brain.
