Six Sigma - Cost Model -Spencer Grimm
In April I started my Six Sigma Black Belt training with the project focusing on our Cost Department and cost
sheet processes The team of BJ Newton Clint Brand Jack Foster Paul Kelsey and I began working our way
towards what would eventually become a real time cost projecting model
The Six Sigma process consists of five major phases Define Meas-
ure Analyze Improve and Control Once per month during each
phase I would attend a week of training classes at Ivy Tech Commu-
nity College in Lafayette learning new tools and methods to help
move us closer to our project goal
As of October the team was able to create a working cost model that
displays and compares current part costs to previous cost sheets orig-
inal quotes and what we currently charge the customer This infor-
mation allows us to have a real time view of parts that are under performing We can also identify process
changes with negative cost impacts considerably sooner than ever before
The model breaks down the cost of each part to nearly every individu-
al process within all major departments giving us the ability to accu-
rately pin point where cost saving efforts should focus The next
phase of the project will be to create a cost team that uses the model to
identify problem processes and areas The team will then work with
the respective department to improve or fix the targeted issue
Jack Foster is considered by many a legend amongst the Cost Depart-
ment He has been the pioneer of creating and updating cost sheets
which until now have been our main method of knowing specific
part costs after the initial quote Each cost sheet usually takes Jack
about an hour to complete and is updated once every 320 days on average For reference there are usually
about 130 unique part numbers on the order book at any given timemdasha lot of work to keep updated With the
model we now have the ability to replicate the cost sheet costs for ALL part numbers in about 8 minutes
The team is very proud of what we have accomplished and hope to utilize the model to its maximum potential
We also look forward to our continuous improvement work with the knowledge and tools we took away from
the Six Sigma process

combination of Coal Iron Ore Copper Oil

Research amp Development ndash Foam Patterns
-Anthony VanEtta
Harrison Steel is always taking on new products and with that comes new challenges We have been pushed
from our customers to produce quality castings with very short lead times We recently started doing some
trials using Polystyrene (Styrofoam) patterns and the trials were successful The goal is
to reduce pattern cost and lead times for very low volume castings We supplied Vanrsquos
Pattern with models of the trays for the lift top ovens and they CNC machined 4 pat-
terns for us These patterns were scanned by our layout department and checked for
dimensional accuracy to prove that foam patterns could hold the tolerances required by
HS The crew at 271 molding did an excellent job of taking on this challenge and
working through the issues A variety of mounting options and pattern partings were
used to find the best combination for HS 18 molds were made and poured out of stain-
less steel This process will be primarily used for ldquoone offrdquo or prototype parts and will not be used for day to
day production
We have also been experimenting with Styrofoam rigging attached to exist-
ing pattern equipment The process is similar to the way a pattern would
currently be rigged but with a less expensive material and less time re-
quired This process allows us to greatly reduce the amount of time to pro-
duce the first casting Although it has not been done yet this process can be
used to modify rigging on a part that is in production and get fast results at
a minimal cost If the rigging proves to be successful then permanent
changes can be made to the pattern
Both of these processes are very new to Harrison Steel but are going to be-
come more common for us to stay competitive We have learned a lot in the
last 6 months and we will know more 6 months from now To the right are
some examples of different Styrofoam pattern possibilities
Cost Reduction Efforts
-Robert Harrison
We deeply appreciate everyonersquos efforts to contain and reduce costs While many of the efforts untaken have
been uncomfortable they have been necessary to better align the company with current business volumes
I would like to illustrate some recent cost savings that have
been achieved outside of our more formal PCR (Process
Change Request) system PCRs must go through a rigid sys-
tem for implementation since they can impact our quality sys-
tems The savings outlined below reflect some of the ongoing
efforts that people send to me as we continually try to reduce
cost without jeopardizing quality or service This is not an
exhaustive list But I would like to start recognizing cost re-
duction successes more as HS moves forward
ISO 9001-2015 Is Almost Here
-Dave Hollander
Our registration audit for ISO 9001-2015 will be on April 18 2017
The Quality Department has put a lot of hours in preparing a new QMS Manual creating and updating level 2
procedures and preparing other required documents
Amanda Dill and yours truly have started drafting audit plans ndash the entire QMS has to have been audited to
ISO 90012015 requirements before the registration audit in April Even taking credit where appropriate from
internal audits completed after April 2016 about half the QMS remains to be audited to the new requirements
The auditor training presentation has been updated and refresher training for the current internal auditors will
be conducted in the near future
The 2015 version of ISO 9001 isnrsquot that much different from the 2008 version from an operating standpoint
but there are a lot of changes
Most noticeably the eight main clauses in the 2008 version have been expanded to ten main clauses in the
2015 version In almost every case the paragraph number and often the title of a given topic have been
changed Documents and records are now ldquodocumented informationrdquo Suppliers of goods and services are now
ldquoexternal providersrdquo Thankfully the new standard does not require all of the procedures to be renumbered to
match the new paragraph numbers We ended up creating a new QMS Manual and four new procedures and
updating twenty-two existing procedures and related documents Level 3 work instructions are not for the
most part affected by the new standard so there will be little effect on the everyday processes
Several topics that were mentioned or inferred in the 2008 version get more emphasis in the 2015 version
Some of these topics include
The QMS now falls under a main clause entitled ldquoContext of the organizationrdquo The needs and expecta-
tions of interested parties must categorically be considered when creating the QMS Interested parties
include owners customers employees external providers neighbors relevant governmental bodies
etc
Management Responsibility is now called Leadership More detail has been added
A section on actions to address risks and opportunities has been added Risk management is required
throughout What was preventive action in the 2008 version is now a part of risk management
Organizational knowledge has been added under ldquoResourcesrdquo
Design and development of services has been added to the Scope in our QMS Manual These services are
any manufacturing processes that might be offered for sale to an external party outside the normal cast-
ing sales Some of these services are finish machining heat treatment and nondestructive testing
The section on property belonging to customers or external providers has been expanded
Post-delivery activities includes contact with customers ndash both routine visits and problem investigation
Competence and awareness have been given more emphasis

THE HARRISON STEEL CASTINGS CO
Commodity Watch -Robert Harrison
We believe that certain commodity prices will
give us an early indicator of future customer
ordering activity The index presented is a
combination of Coal Iron Ore Copper Oil
Gold and Natural Gas pricing Commodity
prices appear to have bottomed in 2016 Pric-
ing trends are positive for the first time since
2011 The positive momentum in commodity
prices should bode well for Harrison Steel
Time will tell on the sustainability of this posi-
tive change
