FA19 Keyed brass barrel tap marked MARTINEAU AND SMITH. Brooks Smith was granted British Patent 2350 on September 20, 1861 for his “Improvements in taps and cocks.” 6”. In Cornish’s Guide to Birmingham and its Manufactories (1858) is this notice: “In the manufacture of brass cocks, which is peculiar and interesting, the reputation of Messrs. Martineau and Smith, Hill Street, probably the oldest firm in the town in this branch of business, stands high for the variety of the sorts they make, and for superiority of workmanship.” $160
