The Paradigm Shift
“Consumerization” is happening, just as predicted
Software + Services is the best of both worlds
Taxonomy AND Tagging are BOTH important
Social networking & social software are on the rise
“Knowledge in modern organizations isn't just 80% undocumented, it's 95% invisible. Social software painlessly teases that hidden material into the light, over time, and I am looking forward to a better future when everyone in the group, division, and company is working to their greatest advantage as a result.”
-- Patrick, Guest blogger on Microsoft KN Blog

Internet Search vs. Enterprise SearchInternet Searching and the “PageRank” algorithm :
“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure
as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, the algorithim interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, PageRank looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves ‘important’ weigh more heavily and help to make other pages ‘important’.”

Why Internet Searching methods don’t work in the Enterprise:
Vastly different content landscape & link structure
Site structure and hierarchy
Relevance has a different definition
People & Expertise
Security & Compliance
Enterprise Search Evolving Trends
UbiquitousSearch is everywhere all the time
Boundaries between structured and unstructured content are disappearing
The worlds of browse, find, and query are blurring
ContextualSearch needs to work the way people do
Search is aware of surroundings
IntegratedSearch is a key service component of an integrated information management strategy and infrastructure
Moving from reactive to proactive (alerts, RSS, tag clouds
User ExperienceSearch in context; actionable results; user tax from multiple search interfaces, and logons; no unified search results;
People and Expertise
Secure, relevant results from silos of enterprise information; untapped people expertiseand social networks;
Secure &
Scalable
Search needs to be scalable, manageableand extensible; privacyand compliance trimmed;
