TARGET AUDIENCE

Danny O’Brien

Chernobyl Diaries

The genres of Chernobyl Diaries are Horror and Thriller, which are the same as our film so in

researching films that are similar to our own it gives us further knowledge and understanding of our realistic audience, therefore allowing us to cater our film with specific conventions that will appeal to the audience

that are likely to watch our film (our target audience).

Chernobyl Diaries

The main target audience of this film is Men between the ages of 15 and 24 of Class C1. The reason for men being the gender that occupy the majority of the

audience is that men have tendencies to enjoy films that provide them with generic pleasures such as being scared and also being excited, which are regularly used conventions in horror and thriller films. Horror Thriller films

typically provide the audience with lots of action which stereotypically appeals to the male gender much more than it does to females. Another reason why

men and not women would prefer watching this type of film is because attractive women are often used and there is a strong, admirable man as the

protagonist which men prefer because they wish to be like this character.

Chernobyl Diaries

As shown in the screengrab from pearl and dean the age range which has the main percentage of people who watch the Chernobyl Diaries was the 15-24 year olds. This does not come as a surprise due to the large amount of excitement that is contained within the narrative of the film which is aimed at younger people as they like this. The

people of this age range can also relate to the characters much more easily than people of the other age ranges. We are aiming our film at the same age range as the Chernobyl

Diaries so analysing this film was very helpful in the research into target audience. However two thirds of the audience were not within the age bracket of under 25, which is a large majority. The film involves characters that are older than 25 so this is a likely

reason as to why there are a lot of people over the age of 25 who watch it.

Chernobyl Diaries

The main class that watched Chernobyl Diaries was C1, with 38%. Possible reasons for this could be because the main

characters are all of C1 class as they wear the typical clothing of a person of C1 class (standard clothing that isn’t particularly expensive or trendy, like jeans and t shirts) builders are of the

C1 class and are the type of people that live for excitement and so this film is suited to them for that reason.

Chernobyl Diaries

Therefore the audience can relate to the characters in the film and are immediatly more drawn into the film. This Class is the same class that we will try and appeal to, so to do so we will use people of C1 class. People of

this class typically have a state school education and don’t have tendencies to be very articulate which is similar to the charcters in the

film, which again can help the audience relate and connect to the characters. Although C1 is the biggest individual class range, 62% of the

people that watched this film were not of the C1 class. This is down to the wide class range that horror thrillers, as a rule, have.

Chernobyl Diaries

The audience who watched ‘Chernobyl Diaries’ tend to be what is psychographically labelled as ‘the strugglers’ - they live for today and in

essence seek escape. They see watching films, particularly horror films in which unrealistic yet highly scary events occur, as this allows them to

‘escape’ out of their ordinary lives which they find boring and do struggle in.
