Target Audience Research Analysis

Page 2: Target Audience Research

The questionnaire was focussing on the type of audiences for social realist productions, and we used this information to form ideas on how we can implement techniques into our intros, to attract these audiences.

Also we can see what people think are most common to social realist texts, so that we can implement ideas into our intros that either challenge, use or develop these conventions.

Questionnaire – Research Focus

Summary of QuestionnaireOn average how much time do you spend watching films in a given week?

0-1 Hours 2 50%

2-3 Hours 1 25%

4-5 Hours 1 25%

6+ Hours 0 0%

This question was used to see how knowledgeable and experienced the people answering the questionnaire are with films.

The fact that 50% of the people that answered this only watched 0-1 hours of film a week, we know that we are generating the perspective of the average watcher. This will therefore improve the validity of our questions about the overall knowledge, and understanding of social realism.

The purpose of this question was to see which type of audience is giving us the information, so that we know what appeals to which type and how we can adjust our content to suit a variety of standards.

The research showed that we had an equal number of people from separate genres of film. This limits the reliability of this question because we have no predominant audience type. This means that we can make no assumptions, that people from a certain genre have specific or different ideas and knowledge of social realism then others.

What do you think social realism focusses on?

Here were the four answers that I was given to this question:

1) Typically outlining the social dilemmas realistically.

2) Social Issues

3) Telling life as it is

4) Predominantly the struggles of working class life

We can see that the ‘average viewers’ of films

and social realist texts, have most one of two

opinions.

Some believe that it focusses on struggles and issues, but in a predominantly working class scene. This can show that they have most likely seen British indie social realist texts, due to that being a very common theme to said productions.

The other opinion on what social realism focusses on is the way in

which the characters and events are presented. This is said to give a

realistic and natural approach to the representations of the culture and characters within the texts. The

people who said this have clearly understood the values and ethos of social realist texts, and shows to us

that they will understand and be prepared for any key narrative or

theme associated with daily life. Now we know this, we can try to implement less common and unexplored ideas to

have a larger and more enjoyable effect on the audience.

What year were you born in? - Answers

•1990•1996•1998•1998

We know from this question that all of the people who answered the questionnaire were relatively young people, who have been brought up with and taught how to use technology.

This shows to us, that most young people will be using online streaming sites or applications to watch films. Therefore they are less likely to go to independent film screenings, and to be interested in a film that is not available online.
