Qualitative Research
Qualitative research is used to explore and understand peoples believes, experiences, attitudes, behaviour and interactions. It generates non-numerical data. For example a patients description of there pain/issues rather then a measure of the pain/issues.

My Target Audience Research
For my target audience research I have chosen to do a questionnaire, for people who are familiar and also aren't familiar with the genre of social realism. I printed out 13 of my questionnaires and handed them out. My questionnaires are targeted at the age range of 16-17 as these age groups are most likely to watch more films and be more interested in social realism films.

What Gender Are You?
Series1
To achieve my research, I have asked 6 males and 7
females. I tried to make the gender equal so I can see
roughly which results I would gather and expect. This would also give my test a fair result.

To gain more research I asked two certain age groups,16 and 17 year olds of which went to sixth form. The reason why I chose these age groups is
because they aren't too young or too old and they could ether
already be familiar with the genre of social realism or could totally not know anything about
it.

For this question I got a fair equal answer. As seven
students said yes and seven students said no. The reason why I asked this question was because I needed to see what audience I was aiming at and
who I asked.

I asked students what their favourite film genre was to see
what the students preferred. From my results we can see a high
number of seven preferred ‘Comedy’ films and the lowest
result shows 3, which was ‘Social Realism’. The results show me that
not a lot of people are that interested in social realism, but
maybe this is because they are not familiar with the genre?

I asked my audience if they thought there was enough British films as I wanted to
see there personal opinions. In my own opinion I
personally do not think there is enough British films as
everybody prefers Hollywood/American movies.
My results show that most students agreed with my
opinion.

For this question I named out five different ‘well known’ social realism films as I wanted to see
which film was most popular and if my audience had seen
any of these films, without even realising they were social
realism films. My results show that Kidulthood/Adulthood were the most popular films watched by my audience and the angel share had only been watched
by one student.

Most people preferred ‘Alcoholism’ or ‘Teenage Pregnancy’ film issues. I
personally think these were the most popular choices as they can relate to my audiences in some sort of way. I asked my audience this question as I
wanted some of their opinions in which they would prefer so I had a better idea of what the public
are willing to watch.

In a film setting out to represent and explore child neglect /alcoholism/ substance abuse/ depression/ teenage pregnancy/ adultery what do you think are important things for the filmmaker to pay attention to?
For this question I had a multiple of different answers…
-Issues
-People who might be ejected
-Showing the neglected child as the main person
-The emotions, the settings of the characters behind the film
-Reality
-Locations
-The real life and how it effects society
-Mise-en-scene

The last question really helped me decide of what issue i will focus on. From the results i have gathered up information and have looked up the themes and issues of what my audience would prefer to watch.
The results from my questionnaire have helped me understand more about what my audience would enjoy to watch and how many people actually had a full understanding of what ‘Social Realism’ is.

Conclusion In conclusion, my results show that a large number of
my audience was not familiar with the genre of social realism films and didn’t have a immense understanding of what it actually meant. However, from the results of my questionnaires it shows that most of my audience was familiar with social realism films as they have watched them, not knowing they were related to the social realism genre.
In my own opinion I think social realism films should be more noticed by the public, as they do not get a lot of attention. Also, the reason why I think social realism films are so interesting is because they can relate to us and you never know what is going to happen. They are related to real life social issues.
