Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Carers,

Swimming Scheme During Weeks 8 and 9, Year 2, 3 and a few Year 4 students will be attending the School Swimming Scheme at Berkeley Pool. This is an intensive learn to swim and water safety program. Students will be walking to Berkeley Pool each day with the first group leaving the school at 10.15 a.m. The

program is free for all students. I would like to thank Mrs Hollick and Miss Quintal for their time and effort organising this terrific program.

Stage 1 Parks Expo Last Wednesday, Stage 1 celebrated the conclusion of their English/Geography unit, titled ‘Caring for Special Places’, by showcasing their imaginative park designs and models with our community. This event was incredibly successful with each student having the opportunity to share their new knowledge with an authentic audience. Thank you so much to every parent and family member who attended and helped to make the day so special. Stage 1 Excursion to Taronga Zoo Yesterday, Stage 1 traveled by coach all the way to Taronga Zoo for an exciting day of learning. The students spent time walking around the zoo and looking at the wide variety of animal enclosures with their teachers. The students also attended a bird show and enjoyed a picnic lunch. After a few prior concerns about the weather being too hot, it turned out to be a perfect day at zoo! I would like to congratulate the students on their wonderful Berkeley Public School behaviour for the entire day. I would also like to thank Miss Packer for her organisation of the event.

KidzWish Christmas Concert Today, selected students from Kindergarten to Year 6 attended the annual KidzWish Christmas Concert. This day of the year is a highlight for many students as they are treated to wonderful music, a show bag and a special lunch. The students finish the day by receiving a very generous Christmas gift. I know that the students were very thankful for the invite and would have showed their appreciation by displaying excellent behaviour and using their manners at all times. Thank you to Ms Green for organising this most enjoyable day.

All Stars Netball Program

Congratulations to Natalia, Zalee, Kokoda and Mia who participated in the All Stars Year 5 Netball Program at Illawarra Sports High School. This was a first in the Illawarra Region and proudly sponsored in conjunction with Illawarra District Netball Association and Illawarra Sports High School. The school received outstanding feedback from the Netball Head Coach, who praised the girls for their excellent attendance and attitudes over the nine training sessions throughout 2019. The girls were also commended for the significant improvements they made in their netball skills. Well done!

SRC News In Term 2, SRC members discussed with their classes areas of need that students would like to see improved in the playground. Disagreements with students playing handball seemed to be a common concern of students. Therefore, the SRC decided to create a consistent set of rules for students to follow. Here is a list of the rules that the students decided upon:

• Make rules before play starts.

• Wait patiently for your turn.

• Use kind words towards other players.

• Stay in your square and play fairly.

• Accept when you are out.

• Sort minor handball disagreements with paper, scissors, rock.

The SRC also created a video to give clear examples of what following each rule should look like. Since implementing these rules, our PBL data has shown that there has been a significant decrease in the amount of negative incidents on the handball courts. Thank you to all our SRC members for their time and hard work creating these rules. Kate Lanham SRC Coordinator

WAGOLL’s Banksia have enjoyed the story “Alexander’s Outing” by Pamela Allen

Alexander is a duckling who always seems to straggle behind even with his mother's warning to stay close. Alexander lands himself in a bit of trouble when he falls down a deep dark hole. Lucky for him there is a very kind group of people who make a plan to rescue him. One day Alexander and his brothers and sisters went for a walk. Alexander wasn’t listening and then he fell into the hole. Everyone tried to help him and then the police had an idea, but, the police officers’ idea did not work. The people had an idea and they started to get water out of the pond to fill up the hole and Alexander was safe. By Bailey Alexander fell down the hole and his mother, brothers and sisters were worried about him. By Azalie. Alexander is not listening to his Mum. He fell in the hole. By Jacob Alexander got stuck in the hole. The people helped Alexander. The people tipped more and more water in the hole and out of the hole popped out Alexander and all the other ducks went quack, quack, quack. By Izayah Alexander was walking and then he fell in the hole. By Zac Alexander did not listen to his mother so some people came and helped. Then they put some water inside the hole. Alexander jumped out of the hole. By Kristina

Alexander was a little duck and his mother said, “stay close” and Alexander was not listening and fell down a hole. The people tipped water down and Alexander got out of the hole. By Ethan

By Zara Alexander got saved by people putting water in the hole and then the mother duck and Alexander’s brothers and sisters were so happy they quacked and quacked.
