Header: The header is used as an extended slogan in this edition of Billboard.

Slogan: The slogan is placed above the masthead so it can be clearly seen by readers.

Main Coverline: The main coverline links to the artists featured on the cover. Billboard have chosen to use a limited colour palate of black, grey, white and purple for the front cover. Billboard have also used the same font for all the coverlines which makes the coverlines stand out on the cover.

Main Image: Billboard have chosen to use a single striking image on their front cover with the artists have straight eye contact with the reader which makes the photo look a lot more effective. The image links to the main coverline which is about the same artist.

Date, Price. Barcode and Website: All this information is vital for the reader to have.

Masthead: The masthead has been covered by the artists head. Billboard can afford to do this because they are an established magazine so readers know what magazine it is without the needing to see all of the masthead. The masthead uses a clear font and is in black so it goes with the limited colour palate. The letter d, b and a are also filled in with green, red and blue which makes the masthead stand out against the grey.

Billboard have also used symbols to separate the coverlines and the purple colour goes with the limited colour palate.

Coverlines: Billboard have chosen to alternate the two types of fonts between the coverlines so some coverlines use the same font.

The repetition of the Billboard logo also helps the reader to understand that the charts list presented is complied by Billboard.

Because Billboard is a music magazine that focuses on music in the charts so on their contents page they have presented, on the left third, all the No1 albums, songs and new releases. They have also told the reader where in this edition of Billboard you can find information about that particular artists or song/album.

Footer: The footer in Billboard consists of extra information and events that the reader may be interested in. They have also used bold to make the headings for each piece of information stand out in the footer.

Masthead: Billboard have used a different font for the masthead in the contents but have still used a sans serif font to make the masthead stand out on the page.

Images: There are three images across the top third of the page with the page number in the corner of the image to show the reader where in the magazine to find information about that artist.

Main Image: The main image also has the page number of where the artist is featured in the magazine but the image is bigger and presented in the middle of the page because the artist is more well known.

Page 3: Task 4- Magazine Analysis

Main Heading: The main heading is in white which stands out against black background. The heading is a clever play on words as the familiar title, “The Lady and the Tramp” has been changed to “The Lady is a Champ”. The use of the word “lady” links the article to the artist, Lady Gaga. Caption: The

caption allows the reader to realise which artist this article is referring to if they don’t already know.

Standfirst: The standfirst gives the reader a brief description as to what the article may be about. The standfirst also includes the byline.

Copy: The copy is all about Lady Gaga and how she made her rise to fame. The article contains information about Lady Gaga’s lifestyle and how it has changed. Because Billboard’s target audience are the readers interested in well known and current artists, the text would contain relevant information that the reader would be interested in.

Main Image: The main image is taken from when the artist is performing rather than from a photoshoot. They have chosen a photo which shows the artists in a long shot and where the light is completely on the artist so the reader can clearly see which artist the article is referring to.

The main image also contains a caption which gives a short description as to what is happening in the picture.

Header: Allows the reader to see what extra information is included in the magazine. NME has chosen to include the names of other artists to make the magazine seem more appealing.

Masthead: NME’s masthead follows the limited colour palate of red, black and white. The masthead is placed in the left third of the magazine so name of the magazine is recognised on shelves. The font is bold and in capitals to make the masthead stand out even more. The masthead has a black shadow effect used on it to make it stand out on the page and to make sure it don’t blend into the white of Dizzee’s t-shirt.

Main Coverline: The main coverline is angled diagonally to mirror Dizzee’s photo angle. The font for the main coverline is similar to the font used for the masthead. The main coverline also follows the limited colour palate choice by using white and black.

The quote from the article (grab quote) gives the reader to a taster as to what Dizzee may be talking about in the article.

Footer: The footer is used to inform the reader of extra content from artists that are included in the magazine. The writing in the footer is in black which also follows the limited colour palate choice.

Barcode: The barcode includes the price, date and issue number which is vital information for the reader to have.

Main Image: The main is a mid shot and the photographer has chosen to make the picture slightly diagonal to mirror the angle of the main coverline.

Masthead: The repetition of the masthead which uses the limited colour palate of red, black and white creates a house style that NME use.

Band Index: The band index also coordinates with the limited colour palate by having the bands names in red and the page numbers in black. This also contrasts from how the page numbers are in red and the sub-headings are in black of the right third of the contents page.

Main Image: The main image is edited to look like a photograph. The image of a tour bus links in with the editors introduction.

Headings: The headings are made to stand out more by blocking out behind them in black. The font of the sub-headings also matches the font used for the masthead and coverlines on the front cover.

Sub- Headings: The sub-headings are used to describe what is included in each section and the page numbers are in red to make them stand out so the reader can clearly see where the article is. Then there is a brief description to further explain what is included.

Advertisements: NME have chosen to advertise their future editions and also mentioned their website and phone number so the reader can get in touch with the magazine if they want to.

Editors Introduction: There is a editors introduction which mentions the main articles included in this edition of NME. The introduction includes a drop cap which uses the same font as the main headings.

Byline: The byline gives the credit for the article and the photograph to the editor and photographer.

Main Heading: The main heading uses a clever play on words as the common saying is “From rags to riches” whereas the play on words like to Dizzee Rascal who was once a youth who used to graffiti a lot.

Standfirst: The standfirst gives the reader a brief introduction as to who the artists is and what the article is about.

Caption: The caption in the top right corner lets the reader know which artist the article is talking because the magazine included a lot of different artists

Copy: The copy is split into four columns and wraps around the image of the radio. The copy starts with a drop cap which is in the same font as all the main headings on the front cover and contents page.

Main Image: The main image is a mid shot. The image shows Dizzee pretending to graffiti a wall which links to the main heading, “From Tags to Riches”. The image behind Dizzee of wall with graffiti on it also helps to make the picture look a lot more effective and believable.

Page Number, Date and NME Title: The page number helps the reader to find where the article is in the magazine. The date and NME title helps the reader to refer back to the article if they want to.

The article is mainly about Dizzee Rascal’s journey to stardom. It refers to Dizzee’s past life and how he became who he is today. The effects and positioning of the main headline makes it look like graffiti style writing and makes it stand out on the page.

Header: Allows the reader to see what extra information is included in the magazine. Smash Hit has chosen to include what else readers can get when they buy the magazine such as posters and free gifts.

Main Coverline: The main coverline is angled diagonally to contrast against the diagonal positioning of the other feature article in the magazine. Also, it could be diagonal to mirror the positioning of Shayne’s hat. The font used in the masthead has not been used anywhere else on the front cover which makes the masthead easier to remember for readers.

The quote from the article (grab quote) gives the reader to a taster as to what Shayne may be talking about in the article and makes the article seem more interesting for readers.

Other coverlines are highlighted in bold so they stand out to the reader more.

Flash: The flash is used to tell readers about the extra content included in the magazine.

Masthead: Smash Hits masthead follows the limited colour palate of light pink, dark pink and white. However, Smash Hits use yellow to advertise other features or promotions they think the reader will be interested in. The masthead is placed across the top third so it can be seen clearly on the page.

Other Coverlines: The other interesting feature article is presented in a yellow box covering it to make it stand out to the reader.

Other coverlines are highlighted in bold to make them stand out more.

Date, Price. Barcode and Website: All this information is vital for the reader to have.

Compared to other magazines, Smash Hits has chosen to present their contents page with the contents list in the bottom third of the page rather than left third of the page.

Editors Introduction: There is a editors introduction which mentions the main articles included in this edition of Smash Hits. The introduction includes a drop cap which uses the same font as the main headings.

Smash Hits have also chosen to mention their team who help to make the magazine and this is presented in the left third of the page. Main Headline: The main headline is linked to the picture but unlike other magazines, this headline/ feature is not mentioned again in the magazine. The main headline uses two different fonts but still links in with the limited colour palate.

Smash Hits have also chosen to use pictures to show the reader where the main feature articles are in the magazine and the page numbers are in dark pink which goes with the limited colour palate.

Flash: The flash is used to advertise the competition where readers could win a prize.

Main Image: Smash Hits have chosen to modify a picture of Westlife to make it look funnier and more appealing to their target audience. The speech bubbles also helps the reader to understand more about what the brief description says. The brief description starts with a drop cap and explains what the picture links to.

Smash Hits have also chosen to put tyre like track marks behind the article and photographs which link to what the article is about.

Copy: The copy starts with a drop cap and the article uses simplistic language so the younger audiences can still understand it.

Smash Hits have chosen to include more photos rather than writing and this is because their target audience is young children so photos would appeal to them more than lots of writing.

They have also advertised their website and when the artists new single is being released to make the reader aware of the information.

The pictures also include captions which involve a brief statement from each of the band members to describe their experience go-karting.

Smash Hits includes a lot of advertisements and quizzes where readers could win prizes or test their knowledge of the artist. This prize is linked to the artists and the article.

Main Image: The main image is a long shot of the band in uniform which links to the subject of the article. The main heading also links to subject of the article.

Flash: The flash is being used to let the reader know who the winner of the band’s trip to go-karting was.

Smash Hits appeals to a younger target audience which is why I think they have used very bright colourful colours to make it seem a lot more interesting. I think it also appeals more to girls because of the use of pink in the limited colour palate and the

features mentioned on the front cover appeal to girls rather than boys.
