Task 9 Formal proposal

Title of Magazine

I have chosen to call my magazine, Vinyl.I, I have chosen this term as it is a musical term that suggests class and sophistication in a modern sense. A vinyl is a black round disc that played music when put on a phonograph. Known for their clarity in sound and classic heritage I have chosen this name in honour of the origins of R’n’B. Vinyl’s were used in the twentieth century, and have since been replaced with new formats such as CD’s this is what one looks like:

Choice of genre

My genre will be centred on R’n’B with the subgenres of modern R’n’B and classic R’n’B. I have been influenced personally by this genre, the music, the style and the culture of it; therefore I will be able to incorporate it into my magazine. I have chosen his genre because I am very familiar with it and know a lot of context of R&B such as what is valid to put in R&B magazines: colour schemes, style of articles.

My target Audience

Will be both female, aged 16-26, I have focused on this age as the features will suit this age group, covering both sophisticated and more urban and up to date features. , it will include ‘Slow Jamz’ and ‘love songs’ mostly based on American produced music. My audience will aim at C1 and C2 social class and so accessible by most, their interests will be ‘soulful’ with a smooth rhythm and a distinct beat types of tracks.

Initial Ideas for my Front Cover

I aim to have a strong mid shot / close up of a black female looking toward the camera in an evoking way, as if feeling inspired and passionate. I will edit the photo to give it an airbrush effect with a flawless finish. I have gotten this idea from VIBE front covers: I think the images are both strong and effective; it is crafted in a way that really invites you into the music and makes you want to read on. The flawless main image will also make you feel a sense of power: the finished look makes the viewer captivate this genre and encouraged as a female viewer.

The main theme of colour for the background will be link to shades and tones in the main image; I want to show a clear link and understanding of magazine conventions by taking a subtle colour from the main image and bringing it into my background. I will also have a strong streak of red running throughout to

denote power, strength and skilfully musical literate; my satrap lies and text will be

in both red and white. Red is because it is associated with energy has high visibility and so on a shelf will attract attention, these front covers show this:

Initial Ideas for my Contents Page

I plan to have my contents page for Vinyl.I, with a longshot of a woman in a strong pose. I hope to have her in a tall position as if the audience is looking up toward her it will be a low angle shot. I want a clear white background with a drop shadow on it of the image which I will produce in Photoshop. I will have the text on the left hand side in small font and in lower case. The Font will be quirky but classy and easy to read. The text will most likely be in a black or grey matte colour with streaks of red running through. I will include the main features with page numbers to direct the viewer’s quickly without wasting time in case readers are just skim

reading.

Initial Ideas for my Article

I plan to have a mid-shot of a female that covers a double page spread in

size. The female will be on the left hand side as the viewer reads from left to right and there will be other images on the double page spread. I want to use this several images as this is what my research tells me is preferred. I want to make sure the images are relevant to the R&B theme. I will talk about the new and upcoming album, their favourite tracks and why. It will be in the form an interview and will have a colour running through it to segregate words in case readers only want to read parts of the article. I will have the article/feature number on the page and will have flashes in the right hand corner advertising extras. The text will run around it and will ‘fit’ in where it can. The main image

will be a focal point of the article and will be what attracts the audience. As well as this I will have a cover line under the ain title to briefly sum up and in an appealing way

what he article will contain. It will have a sense of continuity as the colour will merge into one another, if there is a dominant colour I the main image I will then use that colour somewhere in my text so that it look appealing. For instance in the Soulja Boy article the black and red pen used on his face is significant and is shown in the text by the scribbled writing and colour in the text. to me this is clever as it shows understanding keeps within the conventions of magazine articles.

Initial Ideas for Photographs

I aim to have images of women as my magazine is aimed at the female market. The images I want are bright, appealing and vibrant in colour that is eye-catching and mentally stimulating making readers want to read on and actually pick out the magazine from the shelf. I would like the poses to be strong and so they may be taking from the front dead on, they will show facial expressions. They will be in poses with their arms in different positions showing their style and R’n’B culture. I will have them with different and interesting backgrounds, I may choose a landscape picture or I might crop out the background and have an artificial background
