Page 1: Task1 nme analysis

The masthead is in a large and very bold font. It includes eye-catching colours and draws the readers attention. The reader can now see who made the magazine and the iconic logo that comes with this company.

This allows news and inside features to stand out from the background in certain shapes or sizes.

This magazine has limited cover lines over the left side of the page, this is unusual as the left side can be seen when magazines are stacked in shops. This also goes against the law of thirds when the cover lines predominantly stay on the left.

The use of this type of font shows that the audience being targeted is medium or low brow.

The footer is being used to show some artists in the magazine, this is so the reader can discover the genre of the magazine and the sort of things the magazine will contain

The flash contains some informal and chatty text for example “Wowee Zowee” this makes the mode of address informal, but the magazine in general is indirect and doesn’t address the reader directly often.

The magazine clearly follows the rule of thirds, as the flash, masthead and main cover line are on the left side of the page. This is so that when the magazine is stacked in shops this part of the page can be seen as it is the most important features of the magazine.

The barcode is found along with the date and price on every magazine. This is because from this you can discover all the information about the magazine before buying it.

The main cover line is the biggest feature on the page and takes up the most room on the page. It reveals a main article that is inside the magazine and is the story that the editors think will attract the most readers

The main image is a single striking image that originated from Penny Smiths era of editing. On this magazine it is a long shot of Dizzee Rascal and is the only image on this magazine. It takes up most of the page and stands out from the cover lines and background. The image also anchors with the main cover line just below. The image gets the readers attention and attracts them to read inside.

The other coverline reveals an article that is inside the magazine and allows the reader to discover the types of things inside the magazine.

This part of the cover lists some artists that are in the magazine, this allows us to discover the genre which in turn reveals the target audience. The target audience for this particular magazine is 17-25year olds.

At the top of the page used to advertise something that will attract the target audience’s attention.

The masthead of the magazine is used again at the top of the page. This is the iconic logo and is used so that readers can see consistency in the magazine. The masthead is big and bold and stands out from the background.

A list of the bands that feature in the magazine goes across the sides, they also use page references so that the readers can find them easily and quickly, using these lists is also effective because the readers can see all the artists in the magazine and can then identify which ones they would like to read about.

The list of artists uses read and black on a white background this is the same colour scheme as the front cover so again the magazine is consistent throughout.

There is a section advertising the magazine and how to subscribe this is effective because any readers that like the magazine may subscribe due to seeing this.

There is a single main image in the middle of the page which is effective because people can see by eye what sorts of things the magazine contains. The main image also takes up a lot of room so therefore has importance of attracting readers.

The date of the magazine is below the subheading of contents page. The insides of the

magazine are split into 5 sections, news, radar, reviews, live! And feature. This is effective because readers know where to look for what things.

Page 3: Task1 nme analysis

There is one big main image which takes up a whole page on the side of this article, using a page shows its importance to the magazine and shows that it is important that this attracts readers. The image has nothing on it no coverlines or anything and so has the whole focus of the next page to explain it. This also shows its importance as a whole double page spread is used to cover one story.

Using one single striking image is effective for the magazine as all the attention is put onto the image and the size of this image will attract a lot of readers in to read this particular story.

This double spread has everything that is normally there for example a drop cap, by-line, standfirst and caption. But also has a very big headline which draws a lot of attention being so big and bold.
