WHAT makes the Barossa trulyspecial will be on show this monthduring the annual NAB BarossaGourmet Weekend.

While it’s an opportunity to indulgethe taste buds through food andwine, the gourmet event hosted forAugust 20 and 21, is aimed at thefamily.

This year about 20 wineries opentheir doors and picture perfectvineyard settings to host thousandsof locals and visitors wanting toshare in the experience.

Apart from premium food and wine,the weekend is complemented with arange of entertainment at eachvenue, including music and fun forthe children.

This year is the introduction ofsome special events guaranteed todelight locals and visitors alike.

Take in a movie at Jacob’s CreekVisitor Centre on Friday, August 19,or relax with selected museum winesat the Penfolds Supper Club.

For those with a culinary yearning,the Regional Cooking School atYalumba, hosted by Peter Clarkefrom Vintners Bar and Grill, onSunday, August 21, will be thehottest ticket in town.

Now is the time to check out theofficial gourmet map and work outwhich wineries you hope to visit.

You can start at the cool end ofthe Barossa at Creed Wines,Lyndoch, and slowly work your waythrough to Gibson Wines at LightPass.

Again, the National Bank ofAustralia will provide support throughvolunteering roles which includesurging the public to donate to theOvarian Cancer ResearchFoundation.

According to events managerSamantha Foreman, there’s alreadya buzz of excitement from wineries inanticipation of the weekend.

“While we hope for perfect weathermost of the venue operators aremindful this is a winter time eventand can cater for a change inweather,” Samantha said.

She said the Gourmet Weekend isguaranteed to banish the winterblues, so come and experienceBarossa hospitality at its best.

THE annual Gourmet Weekend isaimed at those who take their foodand wine seriously, according toorganisers.

With this in mind they also urge thepublic to think about a designateddriver.

Organisers of the weekend havealso liaised closely with membersof the South Australia Police toensure tourists and locals areconscious about the drink-drivingmessage.

“There will be a police presenceover the weekend and people shouldchoose not to be foolish,” SamanthaForeman said.

In addition, transport options overthe weekend have been madeavailable.

There will be coaches departingfrom Adelaide and Gawler linkingwith the shuttle bus service in theBarossa. You can start your day ateither one of your favourite wineriesor at one of the town locations.

With the support of Barossa Wineand Tourism Association, LinkSA willbe provide a Park ‘n’ Ride offer to allthe participants of the BarossaGourmet Weekend, where you cantravel the whole day getting on andoff the shuttle buses where andwhenever you like.

Tickets for the shuttle service are$25 per person and can bepurchased from the LinkSA depot inAngaston, as well as from one of thefriendly drivers on the day. Also, youcan pre purchase these from theBarossa Information Centre, GawlerInformation Centre, TanundaCaravan Park and from the BarossaTourist Park in Nuriootpa.

NEW kid on the blockfor the 2010 NABBarossa GourmetWeekend Pindariewinery made waveswhen they brought intheir haystack.

The successfulcombination of hay andchildren has meant thewinery, off GomersalRoad, will bring theirstack back as part oftheir hospitality duringthe event.

Dining excellenceWHILE the wines are winning awardsat Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre, so isthe Jacob’s Restaurant.

In July the team was rewarded fortheir efforts in dining after they werepresented the tourism award at theannual Excellence for Restaurant &Catering SA awards night.

According to the judges, the centreis a hidden gem, while JCVC visitorcentre manager Elaine Ratcliffe, saidthey were thrilled to receive theaward for the second year in a row.

“It is testament to the hard workand passion of our staff who weredelighted to receive this recognitionfrom our industry peers. We hope towin again next year to enter theSouth Australian Restaurant andCatering Hall of Fame,” Elaine said.

Judges’ feedbackFood - ‘All the food has a real fresh

cooked smell and texture, thisreinforced we were going to enjoy awell-prepared lunch. All dishesincluding sides were cooked with avery good skill. Desserts wereinnovative, the homemade ice creamshad great flavour and texture’.

Service - ‘All tables were set welland uniformly. The use of the roomwith table positioning was impressiveto, so we didn’t feel crammed in thelight and airy space’.

Staff members were very courteousand efficient. They displayed verygood knowledge of both food andwine and tourist information area.They were very obliging and welltrained but with a friendly warmth.’

Atmosphere - ‘The venue in a cellardoor is very buzzy and vibrant.

‘Staff switched between areas butclearly stayed on task in therestaurant. They were able torecommend/upsell their wines thatwere in the peak of cellaring by theglass to us in the hope (it worked) wewould buy a bottle from the cellardoor’.

Other comments - ‘The value formoney is excellent for the standard oftheir output of food staff and venue.This proved to be a very enjoyableexperience that I would gladly takevisiting guests from overseas orinterstate or even locals to see whata hidden gem this venue was. If thisvenue is designed to promotetourism they have got it right. Welldone’.

About 1200 guests, including JCVCstaff ate, drank and danced the nightaway to celebrate the high quality ofrestaurant, caterers and hospitalityprofessionals that South Australiahas to offer.

BAROSSA wineryHenschke Wines hasbeen inducted into theFamily BusinessAustralia (FBA) Hall ofFame.

The Keyneton winerywas one of three SouthAustralian businessesto receive the honour.

The award recognisesSouth Australianbusinesses that haveexcelled in their area ofexpertise and made asignificant contributionto the state’s societyand economy.

FBA South Australianchapter chairman KentAughey said HenschkeWines “exemplified thefundamentals of asuccessful multi-generational familybusiness.”

“Henschke Wines isone of the longest-established family winenames in the BarossaValley, and one of themost recognisedwinemakers inAustralia,” he said.

“Since JohannChristian Henschkepurchased the

Henschke winery atKeyneton in 1861, eachgeneration has beendedicated to restoringthe internationalperception of Australianwine as one of quality,diversity and integrity.”

Mr Aughey said theHenschke family is nowa member of the selectgroup, “Australia’s FirstFamilies of Wine.”

“Henschke is adaptingto the needs of thepresent by establishinglong-term ecologicallysustainable practices

and is also workingtowards organiccertification forits vineyards,” hesaid.

“The current fifth-generation, StephenHenschke and his wifePrue, continuallyenhance the family’sreputation bydemonstrating anexceptionalunderstanding ofwinemaking andviticulture, blended withastute businessacumen.”

Hall of fame

Brewing successFOUR out of the five beers createdby a Barossa company have beengiven the thumbs up.

Barossa Valley Brewing andBrasserie, located at Murray Street,Tanunda, won silver and bronzemedals for their Organic Ale andBee Sting in the category ofDraught Ales in the recent RoyalAdelaide Beer awards.

The Organic Ale creation involvesbeing hopped four times whichhelps to create big, bold aroma andflavours, while the Bee Sting’ssubtle rounded honey tones add

complexity without excesssweetness to produce a refreshingbeer.

The company’s English SpecialBitter and Coffee Chocolate Stoutalso received accolades.

According to the company, mostof these beers had only recentlybeen developed, and they werehappy with the result.

The awards follow their highestmedal achieved for their OrganicAmerican Pale Ale at the AustralianInternational Beer awards in2010.
