Tata is a rapidly growing business group based in India with significant international operations. Revenues in 2007-08 are estimated at $62.5 billion (around Rs251, 543 crore), of which 61 per cent is from business outside India. The group employs around 350,000 people worldwide. The Tata name has been respected in India for 140 years for its adherence to strong values and business ethics.

The business operations of the Tata group currently encompass seven business sectors: communications and information technology, engineering, materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals. The group's 27 publicly listed enterprises have a combined market capitalization of some $60 billion, among the highest among Indian business houses, and a shareholder base of 3.2 million. The major companies in the group include Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Power, Tata Chemicals, Tata Tea, Indian Hotels and Tata Communications.

The group’s major companies are beginning to be counted globally. Tata Steel became the sixth largest steel maker in the world after it acquired Corus. Tata Motors is among the top five commercial vehicle manufacturers in the world and has recently acquired Jaguar and Land Rover. TCS is a leading global software company, with delivery centres in the US, UK, Hungary, Brazil, Uruguay and China, besides India. Tata Tea is the second largest branded tea company in the world, through its UK-based subsidiary Tetley. Tata Chemicals is the world’s second largest manufacturer of soda ash. Tata Communications is one of the world’s largest wholesale voice carriers.

In tandem with the increasing international footprint of its companies, the group is also gaining international recognition. Brand Finance, a UK-based consultancy firm, recently valued the Tata brand at $11.4 billion and ranked it 57th amongst the Top 100 brands in the world. Businessweek ranked the group sixth amongst the ‘World’s Most Innovative Companies’ and the Reputation Institute, USA, recently rated it as the ‘World’s Sixth Most Reputed Firm.’

Founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868, the Tata group’s early years were inspired by the spirit of nationalism. The group pioneered several industries of national importance in India: steel, power, hospitality and airlines. In more recent times, the Tata group’s pioneering spirit has been showcased by companies like Tata Consultancy Services, India’s first software company, which pioneered the international delivery model, and Tata Motors, which made India’s first indigenously developed car, the Indica, in 1998 and recently unveiled the world’s lowest-cost car, the Tata Nano, for commercial launch by end of the financial year 2008-09.

The Tata group has always believed in returning wealth to the society it serves. Two-thirds of the equity of Tata Sons, the Tata group’s promoter company, is held by philanthropic trusts which have created national institutions in science and technology, medical research, social studies and the performing arts. The trusts also provide aid and assistance to NGOs in the areas of education, healthcare and livelihoods. Tata companies also extend social welfare activities to communities around their industrial units. The combined development-related expenditure of the Trusts and the companies amounts to around 4 per cent of the group’s net profits.

Going forward, the group is focusing on new technologies and innovation to drive its business in India and internationally. The Nano car is one example, as is the Eka supercomputer (developed by another Tata company), which in 2008 is ranked the world’s fourth fastest. The group aims to build a series of world class, world scale businesses in select sectors. Anchored in India and wedded to its traditional values and strong ethics, the group is building a multinational business which will achieve growth through excellence and innovation, while balancing the interests of its shareholders, its employees and wider society.

CHAIRMAN’S CHAMBER Ratan N Tata is the Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata group "One hundred years from now, I expect the Tatas to be much bigger than it is now. More importantly, I hope the group comes to be regarded as being the best in India — best in the manner in which we operate, best in the products we deliver and best in our value systems and ethics. Having said that, I hope that a hundred years from now we will spread our wings far beyond India..."

GROUP EXECUTIVE OFFICE & GROUP CORPORATE CENTRE Management structure There are two decision-making bodies that define and direct the business endeavours of the Tata group. These are called the Group Executive Office and the Group Corporate Centre. Group Executive Office The Group Executive Office (GEO) defines and reviews the business activities of the Tata group and is involved in implementing programmes in corporate governance, human resources, the environment, etc. The chief objective of the GEO is to make the Tata group more synergistic; it does this by strengthening the relationship between the group and its companies. The GEO creates a shared understanding of a Tata company's current activities, its strengths and its weaknesses. It then addresses the most strategic issues facing the company. Apart from this, the GEO has reviewed the group's business portfolio and clustered companies into seven business sectors. The GEO assesses what unique value a company adds to a particular business sector and, conversely, what unique value the group can bring to that company.

Page 3: Tata Group Project by Pawan Mishra

Besides Chairman Ratan N Tata, the GEO comprises R Gopalakrishnan, Ishaat Hussain, Kishor Chaukar and Arunkumar Gandhi.

Group Corporate Centre The Group Corporate Centre (GCC) is a forum at which broad policy issues relating to the growth of Tata companies are reviewed and the entry into new areas discussed. The GCC also plays a key role in protecting and promoting the Tata brand in India and across the globe. The GCC also provides advisory services to Tata companies in the areas of Human Resources, Finance, Legal, and other functional areas as and when required. Apart from this, the GCC from time to time, reviews Tata companies’ business portfolios across business sectors. The GCC comprises Chairman Ratan N Tata, NA Soonawala, JJ Irani, RK Krishna Kumar, R Gopalakrishnan, Ishaat Hussain, Kishor Chaukar, and Arunkumar Gandhi.

JRD Tata Biography

Born: July 29, 1904 Died: on November 29, 1993 Achievements: He had the honor of being India's first pilot; was Chairman of Tata & Sons for 50 years; launched Air India International as India's first international airline; received Bharat Ratna in 1992. JRD Tata was one of the most enterprising Indian entrepreneurs. He was a pioneer aviator and built one of the largest industrial houses of India. JRD Tata was born on July 29, 1904 in Paris. His mother was French, while his father was Parsi. JRD's full name was Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and he was popularly known as Jeh to his friends. JRD's father Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and Sri Jamsetji Tata shared their greatness from the same great-great-grandfather, Ervad Jamshed Tata, a priest of Navsari. JRD Tata was the second of four children. He was educated in France, Japan and England before being drafted into the French army for a mandatory one-year period. JRD wanted to extend his service in the forces but destiny had something else in store for him. By leaving the French army JRD's life was saved because shortly thereafter, the regiment in which he served was totally wiped out during an expedition in Morocco. JRD Tata joined Tata & Sons as an unpaid apprentice in 1925. He has great interest in flying. On February 10, 1929, JRD became the first Indian to pass the pilot's examination. With this distinctive honor of being India's first pilot, he was instrumental in giving wings to India by building Tata Airlines, which ultimately became Air India. His passion for flying was fulfilled with the formation of the Tata Aviation Service in 1932. In 1938, at the age of 34, JRD was elected Chairman of Tata & Sons making him the head of the largest industrial group in India. He started with 14 enterprises under his leadership and half a century later on July 26, 1988, when he left, Tata & Sons was a conglomerate of 95 enterprises which they either started or in which they had controlling interest. JRD was the trustee of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust from its inception in 1932, which remained under his wings for over half a century. Under his guidance, this Trust established Asia's first cancer hospital, the Tata Memorial Center for Cancer, Research and Treatment, Bombay, 1941. It also founded the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, 1936 (TISS), the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, 1945 (TIFR), and the National Center for Performing Arts. In 1948, JRD Tata launched Air India International as India's first international airline. In 1953, the Indian Government appointed JRD as Chairman of Air-India and a director on the Board of Indian Airlines-a position JRD retained for 25-years. For his crowning achievements in Aviation, JRD was bestowed with the title of Honorary Air Commodore of India. In 1956, JRD Tata initiated a program of closer JRD TATA "employee association with management" to give workers a stronger voice in the affairs of the company. He firmly believed in employee welfare and espoused the principles of an eight-hour working day, free medical aid, workers' provident scheme, and workmen's accident compensation schemes, which were later, adopted as statutory requirements in India. JRD Tata cared greatly for his workers. In 1979, Tata Steel instituted a new practice; a worker is deemed to be "at work" from the moment he leaves home for work till he returns home from work. The company is financially liable to the worker if any mishap takes place on the way to and from work. Tata Steel Township was also selected as a UN Global Compact City because of the quality of life, conditions of sanitation, roads and welfare that were offered by Tata Steel.

JRD Tata received a number of awards. He received the Padma Vibhushan in 1957 on the eve of silver jubilee of Air India. He also received the Guggenheim Medal for aviation in 1988. In 1992, because of his selfless humanitarian endeavors, JRD Tata was awarded India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna-one of the rarest instances in which this award was granted during a person's lifetime. In the same year, JRD Tata was also bestowed with the United Nations Population Award for his crusading endeavors towards initiating and successfully implementing the family planning movement in India, much before it became an official government policy. JRD Tata died in Geneva, Switzerland on November 29, 1993 at the age of 89. On his death, the Indian Parliament was adjourned in his memory-an honor not usually given to persons who are not Members of Parliament.

It is India's largest passenger automobile and commercial vehicle manufacturing company. Part of the Tata Group, and one of the world's largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles. The OICA ranked it as the world's 20th largest automaker, based on figures for 2006. Tata Motors was established in 1945, when the company began manufacturing locomotives. The company manufactured its first commercial vehicle in 1954 in collaboration with Daimler-Benz AG, which ended in 1969[2]. Tata Motors was listed on the NYSE in 2004, and by 2005 it was ranked among the top 10 corporations in India with an annual revenue exceeding INR 320 billion. In 2004, it bought Daewoo's truck manufacturing unit, now known as Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle, in South Korea. It also, acquired a 21% stake in Hispano Carrocera SA, giving it controlling rights in the company. Tata Motors launched their much awaited Tata Nano, noted for its Rs 1,00,000 price-tag, in January 2008. In March 2008, it finalized a deal with Ford Motor Company to acquire their British Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) business, which also includes the Rover, Daimler and Lanchester brand names. Expansion

CarsCarsCarsCars Tata Indica After years of dominating the commercial vehicle market in India, Tata Motors entered the passenger vehicle market in 1992 by launching the Tata Sierra, a multi utility vehicle. After the launch of three more vehicles, namely, Tata Estate (1992, a station wagon design based on the earlier 'TataMobile' [1989] a light commercial vehicle which some people may still think of as Tata's first passenger car), Tata Sumo (LCV, 1994) and Tata Safari (1998, India's first sports utility vehicle); In 1998 Tata launched the Indica, the first fully indigenous passenger car of India. Though the car was initially panned by auto-analysts, the car's excellent fuel economy, powerful engine and aggressive marketing strategy made it one of the best selling cars in the history of the Indian automobile industry. A newer version of the car, named Indica V2, was a major improvement over the previous version and quickly became a mass-favorite. A badge engineered version of the car was sold in the United Kingdom as the Rover City Rover. Tata Motors also successfully exported large quantities of the car to South Africa. The success of Indica in many ways marked the rise of Tata Motors.

Daewoo acquisition With the success of Tata Indica, Tata Motors aimed to increase its presence worldwide. In 2004, it acquired the Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company of South Korea. The reasons behind the acquisition were: * Company’s global plans to reduce domestic exposure. The domestic commercial vehicle market is highly cyclical in nature and prone to fluctuations in the domestic economy. Tata Motors has a high domestic exposure of ~94% in the MHCV segment and ~84% in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment. Since the domestic commercial vehicle sales of the company are at the mercy of the structural economic factors, it is increasingly looking at the international markets. The company plans to diversify into various markets across the world in both MHCV as well as LCV segments. * To expand the product portfolio Tata Motors recently introduced the 25MT GVW Tata Novus from Daewoo’s (South Korea) (TDCV) platform. Tata plans to leverage on the strong presence of TDCV in the heavy-tonnage range and introduce products in India at an appropriate time. This was mainly to cater to the international market and also to cater to the domestic market where a major improvement in the Road infrastructure was done through the National Highway Development Project.

Joint ventures In 2005, sensing the huge opportunity in the fully built bus segment, Tata Motors acquired 21% stake in Hispano Carrocera SA, Aragonese bus manufacturing company and introduced its high-end inter-city buses in the country. Tata Motors has also formed a 51:49 joint venture with Marco polo S.A., a Brazil-based global leader, lead by Brian Behrle, in bus body building. This joint venture is to manufacture and assemble fully-built buses and coaches targeted at developing mass rapid transportation systems.

Page 63: Tata Group Project by Pawan Mishra

Tata Ace Tata Ace, India's first indigenously developed sub-one ton mini-truck was launched in May 2005. The mini-truck was a huge success in India with auto-analysts claiming that Ace had changed the dynamics of the light commercial vehicle (LCV) market in the country by creating a new market segment termed the small commercial vehicle (SCV) segment. Ace rapidly emerged as the first choice for transporters and single truck owners for city and rural transport. By October 2005, LCV sales of Tata Motors had grown by 36.6 percent to 28,537 units due to the rising demand for Ace. The Ace was built with a load body produced by Auto line Industries. By 2005, Auto line was producing 300 load bodies per day for Tata Motors. Ace is still one of the number makers for TML; TML sold the 2,00,000th Ace in August 2008, within 4 years since its introduction. Tata Ace has also been exported to several European, South American and African countries. Electric-versions of Tata Ace are sold through Chrysler's Global Electric Motorcars division.

Tata Nano Tata has developed a car, named Tata Nano that aims to sell in 2008. It is the least expensive production car in the world: the price is about Rs. 1,00, 000 (USD $2,000). The company unveiled the supermini car during the Auto Expo 2008 exhibition in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Bajaj Auto and Mahindra-Renault have plans to launch cars in this price range. Tata has faced controversy over developing the Nano. Some environmentalists are concerned that the launch of such a low-price car could lead to mass motorization in India with adverse effects on pollution and global warming. There was also strong opposition to the compulsory acquisition of land for the proposed car factory in Singur West Bengal. Now Tata Motors Limited plan to set up the Nano factory in Sanand, Gujarat, because of the problems faced in West Bengal.

Jaguar Cars and Land Rover As of 27 March 2008, Tata Motors reached agreement with Ford to purchase their Jaguar and Land Rover operations for US$2 billion. The sale is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2008. Tata will also gain the rights to the Daimler, Lanchester, and Rover brand names. In addition to the brands, Tata Motors has also gained access to 2 design centers and 3 plants in UK. The key acquisition would be of the intellectual property rights related to the technologies.

Electric vehicles Tata Motors unveiled the electric versions of passenger car Tata Indica and commercial vehicle Tata Ace. Both run on lithium batteries. The company has indicated that the electric Indica would be launched locally in India in about 2010, without disclosing the price. The vehicle would be launched in Norway in 2009. Tata Motors' UK subsidiary, Tata Motors European Technical Centre, has bought a 50.3% holding in electric vehicle technology firm Miljøbil Grenland/Innovasjon of Norway for US$1.93 M, which specializes in the development of innovative solutions for electric vehicles, and plans to launch the electric Indica hatchback in Europe next year.

Page 64: Tata Group Project by Pawan Mishra

Global operations Tata Motors has expanded its production and assembly operations to several other countries including South Korea, Thailand, South Africa and Argentina and is planning to set up plants in Turkey, Indonesia and Eastern Europe.

Global brands Tata Motors has been aggressively acquiring foreign brands to increase its global presence. In 2004, Tata Motors bought Daewoo's truck manufacturing unit, now known as Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle, in South Korea. In March 2005, it acquired a 21% stake in Hispano Carrocera SA, giving it controlling rights in the company. On 26 March 2008 Tata Motors agreed to purchase Jaguar Cars and Land Rover from Ford Motor in a deal worth $2.3bn (£1.15bn). Tata Motors has also acquired from Ford the rights to three other brand names: Daimler, Lanchester and Rover. it was rumored in 2008 that Tata was in negotiations along with Fiat, General Motors and Renault-Nissan as a possible suitor for the rapidly declining Chrysler, which is currently owned by Cerberus Capital Management.

Present global challenge Tata Motors have some distinct advantages in comparison to other multi-national competitors. There is definite cost advantage as labor cost is 8-9 percent of sales as against 30-35 percent of sales in developed economies. Tata motors have extensive backward and forward linkages and it is strongly interwoven with machine tools and metals sectors. Tata Group's strong expertise in the IT based engineering solution for products and process integration has helped Tata Motors. India has a large auto component industry noted for its world class capabilities. There is huge demand in domestic markets due to infrastructure developments and Tata Motors is able to leverage its knowledge of Indian market. There are favorable Government polices and regulations to boost the auto industry. However, some major automakers have moved their operations to India to cut costs. Volvo entered India in 1998 to focus on production of its fully built buses. In India, it has focused on providing economical transport solutions in consonance with its values of safety, quality, and environmental care. Its competitive advantage is its high technology which makes the vehicle a very comfortable option to travel through. Tata's trucks have long been reputed for their unmatched performance, build, and technological advancements that are the flag bearers in their production activities in India. It is still operating in the niche market of high end buses where the Tata compete through its Hispano Carrocera and Marco polo S.A. JV buses.

The Government of India announced an automobile policy in December 1997. The policy required majority-owned subsidiaries of foreign car firms to invest at least US$50 million in equity if they wished to set up manufacturing projects in India. It also forced them to take on export obligations to fund their auto part imports and required them to submit to a schedule for increasing the share of locally made parts in their cars. Mere car assembling operations were not welcomed. An Indian cabinet panel will soon consider a new automobile policy that aims to set fresh investment guidelines for foreign firms wishing to manufacture vehicles in the country. Investments in making auto parts by a foreign vehicle maker will also be considered a part of the minimum foreign investment made by it in an auto-making subsidiary in India.

Page 65: Tata Group Project by Pawan Mishra

The move is aimed at helping India emerge as a hub for global manufacturing and sourcing for auto parts. The policy sets an export target of $1 billion by 2005 and US$2.7 billion by 2010. The policies adopted by Government will increase competition in domestic market, motivate many foreign commercial vehicle manufactures to set up shops in India, whom will make India as a production hub and export to nearest market. Thus Tata Motors CV will have to face tough competition in near future, which might affect its growth negatively.

Future challenges Plastic Car Production- Tata plans on producing a car that is made of nearly 100% plastic. * Mahindra and Mahindra: JV with ITEC, North American leader in heavy trucks. M&M has formed a 51:49 JV called Mahindra International with ITEC, USA (parent Navistar International), to manufacture commercial vehicles and to bolster its position in the CV business. ITEC is the leader in medium and heavy trucks and buses in North America, and is the world's largest manufacturer of medium-duty diesel engines. Mahindra International aims to have a presence across the CV market (6-35 tonnes GVW) with variants of passenger transport, cargo and specialized load applications and is likely to start producing medium/heavy commercial vehicles from FY09. * Force Motors Ltd: JV with MAN for manufacturing high-tonnage vehicles Force Motors has paired up with MAN in a 70:30 JV to manufacture high-tonnage and specialty vehicles, such as long-haul trucks, tippers, tractor trailers and multi-axle vehicles in the 16-32 tonne range at its Pithampur plant, with an initial capacity of 24,000 units per annum and at an investment of Rs7bn. The JV plans to sell nearly half of its production in the domestic market, while the rest is to be exported to the Middle East, Turkey, Russia, Asia and Africa. Further, the two companies have formed another JV to manufacture buses in India from end-2007. * Ashok Leyland: Acquisition of Czech Republic-based Avia. Ashok Leyland (ALL) recently acquired the truck unit of Czech Republic-based Avia for US$35m. Avia manufactures 6-9 tonne LCVs and has a capacity of 20,000 units per annum. The acquisition has given ALL direct access to an entire range of Avia trucks, Avia’s press shop with dies and tools, welding lines, state-of-the-art paint shop and R&D facilities. ALL has also entered into technology agreements with Hino Motors of Japan and ZF of Germany to complement its in-house R&D efforts and developing complementary components and aggregates.

History Tata Steel was established by Indian Parsi businessman Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in 1907 (he died in 1904, before the project was completed). Tata Steel introduced an 8-hour work day as early as in 1912 when only a 12-hour work day was the legal requirement in Britain. It introduced leave-with-pay in 1920, a practice that became legally binding upon employers in India only in 1945. Similarly, Tata Steel started a Provident Fund for its employees as early as in 1920, which became a law for all employers under the Provident Fund Act only in 1952. Tata Steel's furnaces have never been disrupted on account of a labour strike and this is an enviable record.

Page 79: Tata Group Project by Pawan Mishra

Production Tata Steel annually produces 9 million tonnes of steel in India and 21.4 million tonnes overseas, making it the fifth largest steel producer in the world. It produced a record-breaking 5.0 million tonnes of salable steel in its Jamshedpur works in 2006-07. The company's gross revenue in that financial reporting year was Rs. 20196.24 crores. Its PBT was Rs.6261.65 crores and PAT was Rs.4222.15 crores in the same year.

Capacity Expansion Tata Steel has set an ambitious target to achieve a capacity of 100 million tonne by 2015. Managing Director B Muthuraman stated that of the 100 million tonne, Tata Steel is planning a 50-50 balance between Greenfield facilities and acquisitions. * Overseas acquisitions have already added up to 21.4 million tonne, which includes Corus production at 18.2 million tonne, Natsteel production at two million tonne and Millennium Steel production at 1.2 million tonne. Tata is looking to add another 29 million tonnes through the acquisition route. * Tata Steel has lined up a series of Greenfield projects in India and outside which includes: - 1. 6 million tonne plant in Orissa (India). 2. 12 million tonne in Jharkhand (India). 3. 5 million tonne in Chhattisgarh (India). 4. 3-million tonne plant in Iran. 5. 2.4-million tonne plant in Bangladesh. 6. 5 million tonne capacity expansion at Jamshedpur (India). 7. 4.5 million tonne plant in Vietnam (feasibility studies underway).

Acquisitions Corus Tata Corus acquisition * On 20 October 2006, Tata Steel announced that it had agreed to pick up a 100% stake in the Anglo-Dutch steel maker Corus at 455 pence per share in an all cash deal, cumulatively valued at GBP 4.3 billion. * On 19 November 2006, the Brazilian steel company Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) launched a counter offer for Corus at 475 pence per share, valuing it at £4.5billion. * On 11 December 2006, Tata preemptively upped the offer to 500 pence, which was within hours trumped by CSN's offer of 515 pence per share, valuing the deal at £4.9 billion. The Corus board promptly recommended both the revised offers to its shareholders. * On 31 January 2007 Tata Steel won their bid for Corus after offering 608 pence per share, valuing Corus at £6.7 billion; as a result and pending acceptance and completion of the takeover, the joining of the two will create the fifth largest steel company in the world.

Page 80: Tata Group Project by Pawan Mishra

Other acquisitions * In August 2004, Tata Steel entered into definitive agreements with Singapore based NatSteel Ltd to acquire its steel business for Singapore $486.4 million (approximately Rs 1,313 crore) in an all cash transaction. * In 2005, Tata Steel acquired 40% Stake in Millennium Steel based in Thailand for $130 million (approx. Rs 600 crore). * In 2007 Tata Steel through its wholly owned Singapore subsidiary, NatSteel Asia Pte Ltd acquired controlling stake in two rolling mills: SSE Steel Ltd, Vinausteel Ltd located in Vietnam.

Tata Steel celebrates its Centenary Year Tata Steel completed 100 years of existence on August 26, 2007 following the ideals and philosophy laid down by its Founder, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata way back in 1907. To commemorate the completion of 100 years of operations, a milestone achieved by few, there is a host of events and activities lined up for the citizens of Jamshedpur.

Controversies The Company is facing increasing criticism that the drive for growth and profits is completely overshadowing its once famed philanthropy and causing lasting social and environmental damage at various locations. In response, Tata cites its programs for environment and resource conservation, including a reduction in greenhouse erosion, raw materials and water consumption. The company has increased waste re-use and re-cycling, and reclaims land at its captive mines and collieries through forestation. Tata Steel's chief, environment and occupational health, says, "Our capital investment in pollution-abatement solutions was in the vicinity of Rs 400 crore in 2003-04."

Dhamra Port The Dhamra Port, a Joint Venture between Larsen & Toubro and Tata Steel, has come in for criticism from groups such as Greenpeace, Wildlife Protection Society of India and the Orissa Traditional Fish workers' Union. The port is being built within five kilometers of the Bhitarkanika Sanctuary, a Ramsar wetland of international importance, home to an impressive diversity of mangrove species, saltwater crocodiles and an array of avian species. The port will also be approximately 15 km. from the turtle nesting beaches of the Gahirmatha Sanctuary, and turtles are also found immediately adjoining the port site..

Corporate rankings * With the acquisition of Corus, Tata Steel debuted in the list of private sector companies from India to feature in the 2008 Fortune Global 500 list (at rank 315) of the world's largest corporations.

In the last few years the Tata Group has extended its global footprint, just as it has enhanced its performance and competitiveness. One of the key drivers of this critical transition has been innovation. The Group looks at innovation as a strategic approach to global growth and has adopted a three-pronged strategy to encourage it.

Communication and recognition A number of initiatives have been launched to spread the message of innovation and recognise innovators: * Tata Group Innovation Forum (TGIF): This initiative brings together a community of ‘innovation enthusiasts’ from across Tata companies. The role of TGIF members is to assist their companies in experimenting with ideas, propagate the relevant ones and spread them through the enterprise. * Innovation workshops: Tata Quality Management Services invites experts to talk about various aspects of innovation and share best practices with Tata managers. Clayton Christensen, Langdon Morris and David Wittenberg are among those who have held such workshops in the recent past. * Tata Innovation Day: Instituted to encourage creative thinking, this annual event and contest recognizes and awards innovation among Group companies. * Tata Innovation Mission: Under this programme, senior Tata executives visit global companies to study how they foster innovation. These missions have visited companies such as Microsoft, Intel, HP and 3M in the US, and Nissan, Fuji, Ito En, Olympus, Toshiba and Hitachi in Japan.

Research orientation and partnerships with academia The Tata Group invests in building outstanding research facilities and forging partnerships with academic and research organizations in order to encourage creative thinking and find innovative solutions that improve our quality of life.
